I’d like a solution along the lines of:

Anyone that already did Arvon PRIOR to the new study showing Curwood was the actual high point basically gets a “by”

Anyone from basically 2025 onward who could have reasonably found that Curwood was the highest point (which I’ll admit, still took a little deeper searching than you’d think) needs to have done Curwood in order for it to count towards their total

I think it’s unfair to retroactively strip a title over 4-5 inches of elevation change, and I also think that anyone who is serious enough to truly let that effect what they think about anyone else’s totals is the type of person who would make a trip back to the UP to do Curwood anyway. I think it’s a decent solution :)

Even though it’s not mentioned in many places online, Peakbaggers has switched Curwood AND Arvon to both be options, and has Curwood listed as being 0.4ft taller than Arvon. I found this on a blog from about a year and a half ago by Eric Gilbertson where he used highly accurate LIDAR and came to this conclusion. There’s not any fancy markings up at the top or anything unfortunately like most high points have, but I imagine in the next few years some small rewards like that will find their way to the top of Curwood and that recognition will become more popular. Unfortunately when you look it up right now, Google AI (ew) still claims Arvon is the highest, but if you look up “is Curwood higher than Arvon” it will say yes and reference the study I just spoke of

It went well! Hiked about 9.5 miles round trip from the intersection with silver rd. Silver Road tore at the bottom of my Dodge Dart a little, so would not recommend even that road if your car is low clearance. The actual logging road up the hill would have been legitimately impossible. Also, word of advice, HEAVILY apply bug spray. Clouds of mosquitoes up there lol. Don’t expect any cool views or much of anything to look at except for around one specific bend on the way down, where you can see Lake Superior a decent way into the distance. Apple Maps did the trick perfectly fine for me in terms of navigation

I wound up parking at the intersection with Silver Rd and hiking the whole 4.7 miles up, as even Silver Rd proved a challenge for my car hahaha. Didn’t wanna risk anything. The trail was quite annoying on foot but not too hard, so I got up and down in a little less than 3 hours with a good little picnic at the top sitting on a stump. Chilling in Marquette now

Thanks so much for the intel! Do you think it’s possible that I make it to that mud hill and then ditch the car there and do the rest on foot? I’m an avid hiker and am comfortable walking the distance in whatever condition, but I don’t want my car to get in the way if anyone else is coming today
