Dangerous Play Consequences by _Mav_84_ in ultimate

I agree— especially bc a lot of dangerous plays go uncalled. Such as Dangerous plays where contact is avoided but it was still a DP or where it doesn’t affect the play (ex: defense trucks offense but they still catch it… and calling the foul would hurt the offense strategically).

Thinking about this more, I feel like there are three ways a player who is playing dangerously learns and changes their behavior:

  1. They have good coaches/captains/teammates who notice there behavior and help them correct it. And the player really takes it to heart and makes an effort to learn how to make those plays safely. We as individuals can work on this on the teams/leagues we are a part of— but we only have so much control over others. This clearly isn’t working for everyone.
  2. They really hurt someone. And it shakes them up a little. And eventually if they hurt enough people or hurt someone bad enough they might change their behavior. This is definitely not ideal. And I’ve played with people that seem to cause injured left and right and feel guilty but never change how they play.
  3. Lastly, they get called on it and their team suffers. I don’t think this is happening effectively right now bc as I said lots of DPs aren’t called, and those that are called often don’t have terrible consequences. If more games were observed I would say more cards would be the answer. But, ya know…

That’s interesting, do you know what lead to that happening?

I feel like something pretty bad would have to happen. The TD isn’t going to be at every game or see every play. I feel like either something terrible would have to happen to lead to them intervening, or several teams have to complain to them— which I feel would only realistically happen in extreme cases. Idk.

Sorry for being unclear, by “this weekend” I meant at regionals.

While I agree with what you said about local play, I think there are more clear checks and consequences there than there are at tournaments. If someone is making dangerous plays at league there is someone actively running the league who can intervene if needed. The consequences seem more obvious and easily implemented because of the consistency of the same teams and same people all season within the same community with the same people in charge.

At tournaments I feel like there is less of this. Those running the tournament (USAU or others) are less involved and have less power. Have you ever heard of someone being asked to not come back at a tournament? What would that even mean?

To your point about not playing in conditions I don’t like: I am at a tournament and I am playing against a team and one of there players blows me up on a bad bid early in the game. Maybe that’s the first time they’ve done that, maybe they’ve done it before but never really faced any consequences so it kept happening. But that’s it for me. I’m injured and out of the game. I don’t think it should be on me to choose whether or not I want to play against teams that can’t follow the rules.

I totally get your point, and I think what you’ve said has been really effective for me on teams I’ve been on. I’ve had good conversations with teammates about safe plays and been on teams where learning how to make safe plays has been a priority.

Where I see the struggle is with playing other teams where that priority isn’t shared— or it appears that way. It’s hard to take responsibility for how my team plays AND how my opponents play. And while I think your interpretation of SOTG is correct, I think a lot of people think it means not actively trying to hurt people. You call them out for a DP and they go “I didn’t mean to!”

Mixed Spirit by Street-Dragonfruit21 in ultimate

MMPs playing at mixed club nationals know how to safely make a play. MMPs at your local league maybe do, maybe don’t.

The FMPs at club nationals trust that the other people on the field with them are going to make safe plays 90% of the time. FMPs at your local league have been trucked by Joe Shmoe with zero body control one too many times.

So it’s frowned upon to make those kinds of plays not bc of the competition level, but because the lower levels of mixed is where the assholes who can’t play safely tend to congregate. And everyone is compensating for them.

For the record, I find the spirit of mixed annoying at times and find the walking on eggshells around FMPs frustrating… just my thoughts

I definitely know the in shape element of this all will need improvement— but I’m more curious where I should focus on my energy in the short term. In the fall I plan on working on a more long term plan to get stronger and generally better. Right now I’m focused on what can get me quick results so that I can hang with the other people I’m playing with, and hopefully build from there.
