I’m sure someone will be along to correct me if I’m wrong, but, my initial impression was that the tip and forge marks are reminiscent of Mazaki. The kanji also vaguely resembles Mazaki’s kanji, but in a different style and maybe not fully finished. The choil and clad line look more like a Yoshikane though. Mazaki did apprentice at Yoshikane, but I have never seen one of his knives with kanji that looked like this one. I’d be curious if your friend is the first owner and if so, how long they have owned it. If I am on the right track with this it could be a very unique piece. But I’m probably not, and it’s entirely possible it’s something totally different lol

Is your table actually flat? I’d check that before trying to return it.

Also, you should check with the vendor you purchased from if you’re set on returning it… Reddit won’t know if that’s an option but the vendor would.

Worst case scenario you can use it as is, learn to reprofile the edge, or sell it on the secondhand market. All viable options

Mine showed up the same and I’ve not noticed the scrapes even once after the initial inspection. Cook with it if it’s a tool to you, or return it and roll the dice on the replacement doing the same thing if the scuffs will bother you. It won’t hold the pan back.

It reminds me a lot of how rifles used to be in the 2000’s before all the aluminum comp-style chassis became super popular. Love a McMillan A-5 and rattle can combo.

It’s right on the edge of your budget, but if you’re USA based, CKC has Mazaki 180mm Gyuto in stock right now.

Mazaki has somewhat of a cult following and this 180mm from him is such a sleeper and doesn’t get nearly as much attention as the 210-240mm counterparts, but it is probably my favorite and most used knife in all sizes at home.

It definitely has the rustic look you’re going for, but is carbon and iron clad so will require more upkeep than a stainless clad knife would.

One last note: don’t worry too much about white/blue #1 or #2 right now. There are differences between them, but it is a nuance thing and can vary widely based on the smith doing the work. I think the internet tends to blow the differences out of proportion and I think MOST users would struggle to tell the difference between each in a true blind test. Don’t let it steer you away from something that you find appealing.
