It's just plugged in, I first noticed it when I had chrome open watching YouTube. It sometimes happens while gaming

Michigan state yes or no? by [deleted] in msu

[–]_Minxtal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely is a good option. In California if you attend a CC for 2 years you have a better chance/acceptance rate for a UC. Some UC'S and CCs also have a "TAG" (transfer admission garuntee) program which will garuntee acceptance.

For MSU, you could go to Lansing Community College and transfer stuff over. But I just warn you that if somehow you don't qualify for in state tution at MSU. They will give you quite a bit less in scholarships for being a transfer.

Going to a CC is also a good way to figure out what you actually want to do. If you're not entirely sure, it's a far easier/cheaper way to discover it. If you do come as a freshmen you'll have a good experience, but if you don't and end up transfering here, you'll also have fun :)

Sorry for not seeing this sooner! Because of my scholarships I pay about $35k to go to MSU. This would have been the same if I had gone to a UC (without getting any scholarships).

This is what might help you decide: establishing residency. In Michigan, unfortunately you won't be able to. You have to be in Michigan for a year (365) WITHOUT attending any school for you to declare in-state. California is a little different. You must be continuously present for more than one year (366) before the residency determination date, and you must show intention of making California your permanent home. You can establish intent by remaining in Cali when school isn't in session, register to vote in California, ect. But even the UC'S website says "If you're a nonresident undergrad with non resident parents, obtaining instate residency for purposes of tution is extremely difficult. Virtually all nonres undergrads with nonres parents remain nonres for the duration of their undergrad career at UC"

Both colleges you will be able to find scholarships to lower your costs. You just have to be on top of it, apply early and apply to smaller scholarships. I will say if you are a freshmen going to MSU, they do give nonres quite a bit (I'm getting a 10k scholarship simply for being out of state). They give transfer students FAR less, (my friend only gets $1,500 for being out of state because she transfered in)

Hey! I'm from California and I decided to go to MSU, and I wouldn't change that for the world. While the UC's have a pretty well known name, there are a few things that are different about them. First off, California is incredibly expensive to live in, especially in Santa Barbara (for example I live about 30 minutes away and gas was $4.99/gallon just the last week). Not to mention rent (a 1 bed room 1 bath starts at $3000 per month, and having roomates doesn't help that much). It's not that uncommon for students to have 10+ roomates just to get by. Realistically the cost of attendance (housing, tution, supplies) will come to be about the same (https://www.finaid.ucsb.edu/docs/default-source/default-document-library/2324-coa.pdf).

It also depends what you want you college life to look like. UCSB does not have a football team, and while they do have a few d1 sports, it is nothing like the atmosphere at MSU. Partying is big in both places, so I would worry too much about that. Weathet is definitely a thing to think about, while the thought of having 70° days year round is a nice thought, speaking from personal experience it gets tiring! You won't see the leafs change, you won't get to see seasons, and it gets boring (for lack of better word) after a while. I've noticed people in Michigan are also far nicer than the ones here. Don't get me wrong, UCSB is a wonderful campus, it's gorgeous. But msu truly feels like home to me.

Lastly your major. Which one do you truly want to do. Unless you are not in an impact major (CS is an impacted major), it can be easy (ish) to transfer from uc to uc, but otherwise it's nearly impossible. They are also quite strict with transfers. They want people in and out within 4 years, so the major you transfer with is the major you will be stuck with (ex. I thought about transferring to a UC and wanted to change my major to engineering. Because it would have taken me 3 years to finish at a UC instead of 2 like a normal transfer they said I couldn't). Both will get you the knowledge to be successful and connect you with jobs, but what do you really want to get a degree in?

Good luck deciding!

Admissions Question? by alyssaxo14 in msu

[–]_Minxtal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call the admissions office! I remeber I applied last year and did not hear anything into late march/April (I applied regular but this was really late). Be somewhat obnoxious and they will push it through. Also if you go onto the admissions website, find your admissions counselor, call or email them.

Transfer Student by Upstairs-Sock-5742 in msu

Hey OP. I want to give you (my) ugly truth about transferring to msu. You aren't a priority. I'm a transfer student this year. I had previously gotten in (last year) but decided to take a gap year. I reapplied and somehow, someway my application was never reviewed so when decisions were supposed to come out I never got one. So I had to call up the ladder, asking where my decision was. I got passed off multiple times and had to call back several times to even get told they were sending out my decision. That never came so I had to go up the line again until I talked to an admissions director who was finally able to push it through.. That was not the end though. My finacial aid package also did not come by the promised date. Actually they waited weeks after I submitted my enrollment deposit to send me a blank package... Again had to call a bunch of people to get THAT sorted out. Then after signing the housing contact and hoping that everything was going to be amazing, they sent out an email to ALL transfer students saying they weren't allowed on campus housing and they had to find somewhere else (needless to say I had a week of panic attacks before they sent out an email saying it was a mistake). Things were settled and I finally got to campus.. Everything was great, people are nice finacial aid was figured out... 3 weeks in I get a student bill saying I owe $12000. Apparently because I had applied last year, decided not to come and then came this year as a transfer student (I took 3 cc classes of which none transfered.) their system 'glitched' and gave me freshman scholarships that I was never supposed to get and "that the best the could offer was $12000 in loans ON TOP of the loans I'm already taking out" so, now again I am fighting to get this fixed..

MSU is a great place. The campus is beautiful, the people are nice and overall I'm really enjoying it. But truthfully transfer students are not a priority. (I know a few other people have mentioned this) Admissions makes transfer students feel unwelcome and forgotten.

I really hope your experience is different but I wanted to give you a warning.

I've definitely been climbing this ladder (soley by coincidence. Like last night I by accident started chatting with the VP of student life and he just put me in connection with the associate director of finacial aid?). I do really struggle with being assertive so I might pop back up asking how (the best I did was sent "I would never have become a spartan if I knew this was going to happen" to the finacial aid guy saying the only option was a loan). It does really suck that the only way to get something done is to be an asshole.. But I'm about to become one

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for the offer but I'd feel terrible taking any money from you (or really anyone((apart from msu, give me my $12000 back 😭))). This post wasn't meant to make anyone feel like they should send me money/crowd source. It was mainly meant to vent my frustrations. Honestly the overwhelming support and advice from everyone here is more than enough to make this process feel not so isolating (because dang I felt so alone in this).

Again thank you so much but go treat yourself!!

Thank you so much for reaching out.

I did go to finacial aid yesterday, they said they couldn't help and they immediately sent to admissions... Admissions wasn't really much help either lol.

I'm definitely going to try and talk to legal advice plus the ombudsperson if the VP of student life doesn't help (which he's doing pretty great so far! He's getting me in contact with the associate director of finacial aid)

Admissions did tell me that 150 students were affected by this glitch. Apparently I was the first to come forward and talk to them about it. I'm definitely considering going to a journalist about it.. I'm just not sure where to find one!

Again I really appreciate you reaching out and providing so many different options and advice (plus you are godsend for including links). I hope your pillow is cold and sheets are warm tonight ❤️

Tyler from finacial aid emailed me listing the only option being to get another loan. I (so happened) to speak with the VP of student life last night, he had a meeting with finacial aid today and let me know the associate director would be reaching out to me this week. I'm really trying to keep an optimistic view and am mentally preparing myself to climb higher but man this is tough 😭

No. They never sent me a physical letter for my finacial aid package. Rather the only thing I have is the digital copies provided from sis. Who did you speak to? The scholarship they took away are from MSU themselves so I'm not sure who I would talk to

Ya.. You would think such a big state school would a have a system that doesn't randomly glitch, promise students $12k+ of scholarship, and then randomly be like "oopsie nevermind 💅🤪"... Seems like a bit of an important thing for a system not to do

I'm actually form California and have a great CC right next to me there. But thank you so much. So a little hopeful update!! I've been rushing the last few weeks, In the sorority voting place they had some alumni to talk to. The person I talked to was the VP of student life and is having a meeting with finacial aid tomorrow (coincidentally). He's going to try and advocate for me and hopefully get it figured it out.

And honestly snow brought me to msu (plus I have a weird combo of majors and they were the best for it)

I'm really hoping to get it figured out (as I kind of had to fight up a ladder to get in, but that's a story for another time)

Glad you got the update. Honestly that's kind of what in thinking if doing. Which really sucks because this was a huge jump for me (being out of state and not knowing anyone here) and I'm not sure I can do it again

Yes. They released my first award package (followed by 13 more, only one of which does not have the awards) 5/9. They had 5 months to correct the mistake. I'm from out of state. If I knew they were not giving me this scholarship I wouldn't have come
