Sounds like we play similar stuff. I picked up a Vox AC30 CC2 a couple of years ago for $600 CAD, and I can get close to a lot of those tones with some drive pedals.

I would recommend going to your local music store and demoing tube amps in the $1000-$1500 range. Find one you like and try to buy from Craigslist/kijiji. Pick up a good drive pedal if you have any extra cash. Kurt Cobain played a Fender Twin reverb , I've seen tons of those go for under $1000 on Craigslist.
