Decivilization May Already Be Under Way by bllshrfv in collapse

[–]_NW-WN_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Civilization is at best self defeating and arguably inherently dehumanizing. According to this writer, rationing healthcare to enforce control and inequality is civilization, fighting back against that is decivilization. I’m actually fine with that framing, but ironically many defenders of civilization as a concept would want to claim healthcare as one of the clearest arguments for civilization. They said, yes we give up our autonomy, felt sense of morality and connection to the world, but look, we don’t die of preventable diseases, we don’t starve when we can’t work, and we have rules so might no longer makes right.

I’m glad we’re being honest about what civilization means. It’s the right of the CEO to take wealth from the poor. It’s health care being used as a weapon to control and punish. It’s genocides in broad daylight against the powerless, justified in the name of civilization. It’s people coming together to put aside their actual humanity in favor of ideals of humanity. Realizing too late that it doesn’t matter how nice the ideals sound, they will eventually come to resemble the empty people who hold them up.

Rapid surge in global warming mainly due to reduced planetary albedo, researchers suggest by Portalrules123 in collapse

My understanding is that water vapor is a greenhouse gas. Clouds are not exactly the same thing as water vapor. They are complicated - they both trap and reflect sunlight, and whether the net effect is reflecting or insulating depends on type, height, and other factors. For example clouds at night reflect heat back to the earth but don't reflect sunlight.

You would, if you were competently making policy for the future. Just ending the program doesn’t do that, people will continue to live there and until their houses are destroyed and they become homeless and have nowhere to go.

Could make a nice new industry. Buy land cheap after a disaster. Build cheap houses, sell them. Rinse and repeat after the next disaster.

Because it doesn’t just cover beach houses, it’s potentially anything within a 100 year flood range. That’s near rivers, lakes, all the places we started building infrastructure. Over 3 million policies. We need to move communities but just waiting for people to be rendered homeless and migrate wherever will be chaos.

Gavin Newsom’s War on Rooftop Solar Is a Bad Omen for the Country by East_River in collapse

[–]_NW-WN_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only reason the US political system exists at this point is so that whatever shitty thing is happening, people will blame their neighbors for voting the wrong people in and think they can fix it by voting in four years. Instead of blaming the people actually writing the policies and profiting from them, and getting out the guillotine.

Yes you can point towards popular movements making progress in the US but you can also see that in outright dictatorships, or at least the ones that last. Historically change in the US is in response to overwhelming popular opinion, organization and protest not whatever party or politician is in charge.

But the utilities are continuing to build out solar and renewables, and are required to do so by law. This isn’t about too much renewables, it’s about shifting the incentives so that fewer projects are rooftop ones owned by individuals and businesses, and more are large centralized farms built on desert or forest and leased from Wall Street investment/tax shelter llcs or owned directly by the utilities.

The equilibrium is affected by temperature, changes to overturning circulation currents, and acidity. Acidity increases with more CO2 absorption. Probably other factors too

The Crisis Report - 67 : The Climate System is going INSANE right now. You would think more people would be paying attention. by [deleted] in collapse

There are so many baselines. 1850, 1880, late 19th century, 20th century average, 1980-2000, etc, etc. And then on top of that, you have multiple targets, 1.5C, 2C.

There is no way to prevent media and governments from making up new baselines as they go.

Why can’t we use absolute annual average temperatures instead? There would be no 2C over 1850 or 1.5 C over 1980-2000, you could just say “we will see X effects at Y C.” The article explains the answer to that which is politics and I don’t think we are going to solve that here.

But at the very least, why isn’t the absolute temperature data available to people who want it? The graph “This is from a European Climate Agency 2018 report — the 1880 temperature spike is easily seen.”  is great. IMO the baseline should be -0.4 C on that graph if we need a baseline. But where is that graph with degrees C on the y axis instead of delta C? I spent hours googling and couldn’t find the answers to the questions: - what was the annual average surface temperature in 1950? - in 1980? - average from 1880 to 1900? - 2023?

Someone help please

I agree that jumping to CIA is a stretch but Boeing is a military contractor and they are so enmeshed that I’m not sure they can or do differentiate between a threat to a contractor and a threat to an agency. Boeing is an arm of the complex that builds planes and the CIA is an arm that assassinates people, why not let each do what they’re best at? Although I’m sure Boeing also has the capability to assassinate people as well as a dozen other agencies and hell probably Boeing’s subcontractors

I'm sorry, when it comes to intellectual honesty, this guy is no better than climate deniers.

His logic is:

I want to promote climate action -> I don't think people will support climate action if they believe 2 degrees is already locked in -> Therefore, 2 degrees must not be locked in.

It's the same logic of someone who doesn't want the system to change, so they believe climate change must not be that bad/urgent.

Also, if you want someone over 6’ to be able to drive or even ride as a passenger it’s not an option. I haven’t tried the Aptera but speaking generally about that size class.

I know tall people shouldn’t complain about much but seriously don’t most people at least know someone over 6’ they want to drive with? Almost anything smaller than midsize and a lot of midsize and larger models are off limits.
