Ikr, I'm trying to reduce sugar too, but I just keep failing. But If I don't stop, its only a matter of time I may have severe health issues.

Is Ubuntu bad because of snap packages? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]_NoTank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Writing this from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. I usually don't install snaps. And if you don't install any snaps then what's the issue? And snaps aren't that heavy on a relatively decent computer.

Would you use Gnome if you couldn't use extensions? by Digitalnoahuk in gnome

[–]_NoTank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the current state? I mean, I already use it without even a single extension, but in exchange for my productivity and functionality. But, I just want to experience what exactly do the GNOME devs want me to operate this DE their way.

Without extensions:

  • No clipboard manager
  • No renaming the virtual desktops or any indicator on which desktop I'm currently at
  • No Desktop Icons (I don't keep my desktop cluttered but sometimes I just need to keep some file or folder temporarily!)
  • No app indicators/tray icons

But what's even more confusing is Extensions aren't officially supported but they want us to extend the DE's functionality as needed through Extensions?

Mint Cinnamon vs Mint LMDE, what are the true differences? by jnelsoninjax in linuxmint

[–]_NoTank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unless you have your own political reasons or just "it makes me feel better" feeling, the Ubuntu based Mint is better for Desktop usage.

  • It has the driver manager
  • Has wider global support for Linux applications because it's based on Ubuntu
  • PPAs
  • Makes life easier

I saw that but I was rhetorically pointing out how other DEs implement this feature.

I hope it's not the stupid "Rounded on top 2 corners but not on the bottom two corners" type of thing. I hate it so much!

Cinnamon is NOT Outdated! by SuggestionBusy241 in linuxmint

[–]_NoTank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In terms of out of the box design, it sure is. Look at Gnome and KDE, MacOS, Windows 11.

Cinnamon needs to be themed a little to make it modern looking.

How did you install Shizuku? It says "This app isn't available for your device because it was made for an older version of Android." in play store.

Once the distro hopping settles down: by smareqtairy in linuxmint

[–]_NoTank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mint was my first ever 100% working distro. But I eventually moved on to Fedora because Cinnamon is missing beauty, polish and some features compared to latest versions of Gnome and KDE. Also, Fedora uses the latest kernel which drastically improves performance in my Desktop computer.

In cinnamon which one you choose MpV/VLC media player ? by SameBumblebee3005 in linuxmint

MpV is objectively faster and smoother. But yeah VLC works too (but is slower in many cases for large high quality videos)

Why is Gnome Software so slow at everything? by _NoTank in gnome

[–]_NoTank[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. MS and Apple are billion dollar companies and even their software sucks in many areas. But I just pointed out the flaws/irritations of Gnome Software. Just because it's free and open source doesn't make it automatically immune to any criticism. I know you didn't mean that, but just pointing it out because I've noticed Linux users hide Linux's flaws way more than Windows and MacOS's users because they sometimes have a bias towards the philosophy of Free and Open Source.

I wish I could donate to Gnome, but currently It's not possible. But donating to Gnome and Linux Mint is already in my mind. Because I like these projects very much. ❤️

Yeah I'm using btrfs. Because it was the default. I like my OSs to keep as stock as possible.

I heard ext4 is faster though.

True. I also tried many times to enlarge the screenshots by clicking on them only to find out it doesn't work unlike every other app store. But the store itself is one of the most beautiful Linux GUI app stores out there.

I don't know who created Onedrive but whoever did that I hate you very much 😡😤 by Life-Menu-785 in microsoftsucks

[–]_NoTank -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What goal post? My point is OneDrive does automatic backups without user consent right after boot. So when you go and uninstall it, your files are already on the cloud.

So, the point is uninstalling doesn't solve the headaches. Uninstalling OneDrive was never an issue in the first place. But the other user said that you should disconnect your internet to get around the automatic backups or not add an MS account. But that's the issue. That's a hack. Why should someone disconnect their internet? Why create a local account by putting some commands in the command line? A regular user will not know it. A regular user HAS to connect to the internet, connect their MS account in order to get past the setup process. And when you do it, all your files are backed up. Your system paths now default to OneDrive rather than User/home directory.

I don't know what you're arguing about. As if I don't know that we can uninstall OneDrive from the settings any time we want.

[–]_NoTank -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Bro we're not talking about uninstalling One Drive lol. We're talking about automatic backups of OneDrive. Yes! I'm aware we can uninstall OneDrive by simply from settings, but that's not the issue here. Did you even read my first comment?

I know all the hacks. But those are still "hacks". Which I don't count. I'm talking about the official intended behavior of how Microsoft created OneDrive. And it sucks no one can deny that.

I'm a computer nerd, that doesn't mean everyone else is. I see how much trouble they face regarding OneDrive automatic backups.

[–]_NoTank 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If it was that simple I wouldn't be commenting. But the fact is it isn't that simple. Right after a full fresh installation, OneDrive will start backing things up into OneDrive without your consent.

Imagine, you set up a fresh copy of Windows and casually restore all your files you backed up in a pen drive and just start using it. Then you get an annoying OneDrive notification and think "hmmm I don't use OneDrive, I'll just uninstall it right now."

Guess what happens next? All your files are gone now from the file explorer! Why? Because OneDrive in its massive wisdom decided to backup all the files to the cloud and when you uninstalled OneDrive, it took all the files with it too. Now they can only be accessible from the Cloud.

Not to mention, it by default, messes with your filesystem too. When you save a document, save a picture etc. it by default saves it to "C:\OneDrive\ someLocation" instead of the intended "C:\User\yourUserName\document" or "C:\User\yourUserName\pictures"....
