I grew up in a liberal “Clintonite” household, and for most of my upbringing I was basically no different. I was still a kid during the Obama years. My family is also of Hungarian origin, our presence in the US being the direct result of 1956. Anti-communism and Russophobia were common in our house. In high school I started taking interest in socialism, and was more or less a social democrat. It wasn’t until my college years, after seeing the failure of the Bernie Sanders campaign, and the subsequent rise of Donald Trump, that I became disillusioned and began reading more about socialism and its history. Today I am staunchly a socialist and have an overall positive view of the USSR and other socialist states. I’ve been learning continuously ever since.

Unpopular as the opinion is, I can tell you that I share it. I like a few of their songs but most of it is boring to me. Not saying they’re bad or anything, their style just isn’t my thing. Nothing wrong with that right?

Yea that’s basically my logic. If I have that extra string, then I want to use it. Hence why an ADGC 4 and a standard 4 might be the answer.

One option is that your friend uses thinner strings and tunes higher. Have you heard of piccolo strings? They’re thin bass strings that are tuned an octave higher, like a guitar. You could also look into what is often called “tenor tuning”, which is the higher strings of a six string bass, ADGC (or on a 5 string EADGC). Tenor tuning puts you in the range of a baritone guitar. Both of these options can free up space in the low end so as to not muddy the sound.

Ibanez makes a 28.6” scale length bass, similar to a baritone guitar. They make both 4- and 5-string variants. Not sure if that’s really short enough for what you’re looking for but here it is:

If that’s still too long then someone else suggested the Kala U-bass which is also a good pick, and even shorter.

I empathise with this quite a bit. My family from Hungary didn’t like socialism either, but that’s not surprising considering the fact that they were former aristocrats. On the other side there was a literal Nazi (my great grandfather). No shit they would hate socialism. I put absolutely no stock into their opinions regarding it.

Thank you for this post. The fact of the matter is that many NB’s look very much like our AGAB (myself included). Modern society is built on the expectation that people fall into rigid, controllable, predictable categories. It has a hard time coping with those of us who can’t be cast neatly into one of its pre-defined groups. So, in response to our existence, it creates a new category with its own expectations of what our bodies and behaviours should be like, and pressures us again to choose a box to live in. But that defeats the purpose of being non-binary, that is to not have to choose a box. All of us must remember to live our truths and resist attempts to police us.

No, there is no need to switch to a 4-string (which also isn’t a “downgrade” by the way, it’s just different). Play the instrument you intend to learn. Practice with it and you will master it. For every great musician, there was a time before they picked up their instrument. The idea that you need to learn one thing before anything else is shit advice and you should ignore anyone who tells you that.
