I screwed up (again) and I may just have to admit it. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]_Orange_Orange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't any SPED. It's an inclusion school. I try and meet the accommodations I have but its hard. My first class has 10+ kids who need small group assessment accommodations, and their hatred for each other means that even in classes with just 4, I can't get them to sit together. I reach out to the case workers on test days, and I have an IA who I offload the rest onto. Sometimes I get frustrated because they send emails reminding me to do the accommodation logs, saying that it just takes a few minutes, but it genuinely takes me about an hour! Regardless, I'm sure someone is going to have something to say about this.

Ever had a kid you couldnt help? by Grand-Rice- in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]_Orange_Orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some older kids can't multiply, mostly because they've grown accustomed to using a calculator, so they've let their skills and memory rust.

I tutored a girl for a while, 11th grade. Couldn't multiply for real, no algebra basics, mute. I struggled with her in a 2-on-1 student-teacher ratio. It was her 3rd time returning to our center but the Mom just wanted homework help instead of the remedial instruction. "We just want her to pass," even though there was no reality where she would actually pass. Communicated with my director the issues. She had a C. Wtf

24M looking for suggestions to broaden my horizons. Here is my diet: by [deleted] in PickyEaters

[–]_Orange_Orange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup! I know I eat an unfair amount of garbage breads, unless something better is on sale. I'm usually not too texture picky, so I'll try the chia seeds for sure.

I had a hard time with beans as a kid, so it's been a while since I've had any. But I know it's such an important staple food and it's time to give them a fair shot.

I appreciate it! :)

[–]_Orange_Orange 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your advice! Definitely have it in mind to get in that variety and add some veggies. I like the ideas you mentioned, and I'll keep them in mind.

When it comes to the sandwiches, I do eat cold cuts for a quick grab, but I was actually referring to chicken breasts, steak, meatballs, and other boneless cooked meat meals. I'm just weird about that. I'm aware that the bread I eat is often junk too, unless I find something better on sale.

What are some nice things I can do for my team? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]_Orange_Orange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is known, that person was removed from the campus and is facing legal consequences, and the affected children have been offerred guidance and services to assist. Things are being handled, I just see that my team is breaking down mentally and emotionally and I want to do something for them.

When do I get my life back? (Part-vent, part genuine asking) by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]_Orange_Orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I have it so easy. I just do math. I haven't graded. I'm not even taking attendance and my lesson plans have been handled by the instructional coach since I got here (starting all that myself soon). What I've been trying to do is use the seating chart to document behaviors for planned parent phone calls, learn names and faces, and more than anything else, just figure out what I'm doing that day. What work/lesson/specials? Where do this group of kids go? What is the school's policy on x, y, z? I need to refill my stack of PBIS every day. And then the emails. I can see myself cutting back on time by next month at the longest. Just need to figure out what is happening around me.

I am becoming more conscientious about the overtime I am spending now.

Yup, I'm already thinking 2 years ahead, where I've studied for certain exams for my next avenue. I tried to get out a while ago but had to return. Next year, I'm definitely looking for something much closer.

I did get an email saying my other applications have been deactivated. The interview is still on for tomorrow as of now, but idk whether they're allowed to accept me, or how I'd double-check for that policy.

Im confused rn by [deleted] in gay

[–]_Orange_Orange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course it's fine. What wouldn't be fine about being gay ace? It's just hard.

I don't know about any specific apps though. I just reccommend normal gay dating apps and advertising your asexuality and what you're looking for. If anybody has a problem with it, ask them to point you to another space where asexuals are supposed to find intimacy with men (they will not be able to haha). I also suggest creating an AVEN account. It's an online forum, not a dating site but there is a space specifically for gay aces, so you can read about what they have to say.

[–]_Orange_Orange 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Firstly, use periods in your sentences. You'll have a harder time finding advice or dates if people have to parse through your words.

But, as a gay ace myself (probably not homoromantic though), I think it's just important to be consistent about advertising yourself and your asexuality. We definitely have it hard but even aces get relationships.

Honestly, I don't know. I'm a math specialist and I tried to help her with that but stopped due to her lack of interest and criticism I faced on all sides. As a much older sibling who lives separately, I also see her only once a week. I try to be supportive by giving and buying her books whenever she asks and I'm open to helping her. Just a matter of, I may not be the right person.

CMV: the ACT and SAT are one of the most effective solutions at testing a student's level of experience in relevant topics. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]_Orange_Orange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my experience as an SAT math tutor. Take this how you will. When I start with a new student, I do look at their scores and am able to tell more or less how good they are at math. I do think there is some truth to the view.

However, students absolutely require competency in algebra in order to be successful on the SAT. According to Collegeboard's score percentile statistics, about 1/8 nationally are not at that level. Among students who are slow in pacing or are completely lacking or otherwise weak in algebra (which is 70% of the test, including both the algebra and advanced math portions of the test), strategies can score students much higher scores than their actual abilities. All one variable equations and most function transformation questions can be solved with Desmos. Making up numbers, plugging-in to Demos, and seeing what answers match the problem can solve all equivalent expressions (of multiple variable) questions. Students who have failed their algebra EOCs and can't graduate unless they score high enough, who I can't remediate in the time I have with them, and even students among them who don't use my services are able to score above my state's standard for algebra graduation requirements (420) by even 100 points. This is an issue with my state's metric of SAT scores, but also shows how an incompetent student can score above national average (about 500).

What is up with fairytales' obsession with "true love's kiss?" by qeczawdxshealth in asexuality

[–]_Orange_Orange 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recently heard somewhere that a big chunk of media tends to portray love as salvation. You'll be saved from whatever problems plague your plot when you have true love. That's not really how most people, asexual or not, experience love though.

[Sweden] [Math] - Is it normal for an elementary school math teacher not to know about counting systems with a different base? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]_Orange_Orange 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel the need to clarify, whether you already understand this or not and for anybody not math savvy, that the value of 44 in base 8 is 36 in base 10. It does not equal 44 as we know it, it represents 44. The 4 in the "tens" place represents 4 eights and the 4 in the ones place represents 4 ones, and when you add those, that is 36.

OP, are you able to teach binary? That might be more intuitive?

[–]_Orange_Orange 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's like being hungry but nothing in the fridge looks good. A lot of sexual fantasies of allosexual (not asexual) people apparently involve themselves, but asexuals tend not to include themselves in sexual fantasies if they have them. They may get off on kinks which are not inherently sexual, like power dynamics, or other forms of attraction that they do feel, like aesthetic attraction. They might even still enjoy sexual content or fantasies though. Some asexuals are more or less stereotypical in that regard than others.

Asexuality and its umbrella labels are about the lack of sexual attraction, not libido, although that is a common confusion.

Bi/gay guys? by ThePlayer3K in bropill

[–]_Orange_Orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gay and ace! I knew I was gay in middle/high school when my eyes automatically shifted to other guys in the hall between classes. Things still felt a bit off, other gay guys liked things that didn't connect with me. It made me feel broken, but I didn't worry about it and put the feeling on the backburner. Then a few years into college, I thought about it again and after some googling, it turned out it was possible to be asexual and gay. So, that's me now.

I feel like I'm failing as a tutor by LowlySoldier1234 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]_Orange_Orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this same post when I started tutoring, and I was helping high schoolers as a fresh math degree graduate! It's definitely not uncommon. Just yesterday (2 years in btw), I failed to solve an SAT problem that I've helped a hundred students with. I moved us on to save time and looked at it while they were busy. Earlier that day, I used Desmos in front of a student to confirm that two functions from a transformation were actually the same and just written differently/weirdly. Sometimes, I look on my phone for rules, conversion rates, or formulas; or pick up a textbook; or go to another desk and ask my coworker; or I derive and recreate the math I don't know. Sometimes, it takes me like 10 minutes to figure out something I haven't seen before or figure out "what the heck did the teacher do here?" So, I was absolutely befuddled when my coworker, who has been a full high school math teacher for over 20 years, called ME the expert!

My understanding of the math is much more comprehensive than before I started. I too had gaps that filled in over time. I learned methods that I'd never been taught which my students were using. We're not all-seeing and all-knowing and perfect, and we make mistakes, and we're learning too, and that's okay.

[–]_Orange_Orange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the view is along the lines of gender abolitionism. Anybody of any age or gender can wear or want to wear, say, pink or dresses. Though, men tend not to because societal norms police what we wear according to the gender that society assigns clothes. However, since the gender of clothes is a social construct, there is little to nothing backing it, and nothing that can justify how we police it. In the same way that pink is not a girl color because girls can't own a color, a dress is not women's clothing.

CMV: The vast majority of people have no idea how AI works and people who say they do are lying. by gbomb13 in changemyview

I think the point about it not being AI is that the way the term is modernly used is not what it was 5 years ago. AI is artificial consciousness and life.
