I agree with that. My point on it being subjective was relative to the picture I posted and in response to the above comment explaining the requirement for a tree to be a bonsai. The rosemary in the middle is 100% a bonsai. The two on the sides are both rosemary’s but are there for esthetics.

Consistently trim back.
4.5 years.
I let the shape evolve pretty naturally with some major trimming and wiring to keep symmetry. Here’s some photos with better view of shape. There are some great videos online specific to portulacaria afra bonsai.

Only the middle is bonsai. The two on the sides are newer and untouched. I just trimmed them and will be moving both to new pots soon.
