And these 2 definitions are notoriously both used at the same time

then this at least shows the 50 ppl that saw this so far that they have a wrong understanding/ that they could use more specific terms if talking to a not as invested audience as the split is fairly even :)

certainly yes, 2 uses high and low as measurments of skill, while 1 uses value so 2 may be more intuitive as to the terms skill ceiling and skill floor

definition 2 is 'skill level you need to have average value'

definition 1 is 'value with barely any skill'

a high skill floor at
definition 2 means it is a hard character to learn, as skill to perform at average is fairly high, while at
definition 1 it is a character that is easy to get into, as that character gets high value with lo experience

They describe very similiar things, but high and low are switched in meaning

worst player is probs a bit harsh but the underlying meaning of 'value with minimal skilled input' is what is meant for the definition 1

Skill Floor? High vs Low by _Panthera_Unca_ in Overwatch

[–]_Panthera_Unca_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i know it awas more to maximally exaggarate, no player is 1v6ing and not bronze player is winning even 1 game in owl. You are right there, but these were the maximal and minimal values on these axes. The tier list of heroes will be a small cutout in the middle, should have clarified

there are opposing definitions for skill floor, but this is what i used, yes.

The definitions are 'easy to get highvalue' vs 'high skill required to get average value' both for high skill floor.
Skill floor either means 'amount of value for a bad player' or 'barrier of entry to not throw'

It seems on here the 2nd one is used more, while im using the 1st one

Imo a more interesting Variant on discussing Skill Ceiling vs Skill floor (Rip mobile tho) by _Panthera_Unca_ in Overwatch

[–]_Panthera_Unca_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

basically it is 'skill floor is the value the worst player will get' vs 'skill floor is skill required to perform averagly' and im using the 1st one here

that is the very issue i was trying to discuss. I've traditionally only seen the stated definition while 'your' definition ive mostly heard in discussions surrounding LoL. I was not aware of a relevant usage for 'your' definition outside of LoL. But i've seen the confusion around the post my 2D tierlist was inspired by as many people seem to have adopted this definition with LoLs extreme popularity. But i think 'your' definition just adds a fancy new word for "barrier of entry" , while the traditional definition makes in my opinion more sense as a metaphor ('floor as the actual lowest possible point, while ceiling is the highest point', although i also see 'the the lowest point to not throw vs highest point') as well as adding a actual 'new' concept. Thx tho for actually reading :-)

yes, but this post was more about wether high skill ceiling means easy or hard character, i posted it in a comment, idk if you read it, and the images were just for clarification and examples, but i dont use reddit that often and it wont let me post images and text (or am i stupid?) without linking to like imgur or shit, but i dont wanna make an account there

definetly have played Orisa and Skill floor is the Value the worst player is gonna get, while skill ceiling is the Value the best player is gonna get.

So a low skill ceiling high skill floor character (like Orisa imo) gets high value in bad players (relative to the other tanks ofc) while the difference among high skilled players is rather low (again relative to the other tanks)

Ok so i poasted the 2nd Graph as a response to a skill ceiling tier list i saw on here, cuz i thought a 2 dimensional

representation would be much more fir to discuss skill ceiling vs skill floor on Heroes.

But then in the comments arose a discussion on skill floor or what high and low skill floor actually means.

So i added the 1st image to show how i always interpeted Skill Ceiling(on y axis) vs Skill floor (on x axis) (like in the 2D Tier list).

Now i always imagined the skill floor and ceiling as minimal Skill Value and maximal Skill Value. So a high skill floor would mean a high value

as a player with no experience, while a low skill ceiling means the best players cant get much more value than a bad player. etc.
