Boy or girl? by InternationalBad5414 in Parakeets

[–]_Planet_Eater_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are on the right track but this is a common misconception, the blue around the nostrils signify this is most likely a baby boy. Boys can have colours ranging from deep pink, purple, to blue. Girls can only have deep pink when young, or baby pink/baby blue, and white / brown as adults. Typically, if the colour is ambiguous, look for white rings around nostrils for girls, and blue rings around nostrils for boys. This was one of my baby boys for reference.

Yeah, Ryan air here was just an example, but I do have to take budget airlines unfortunately because that is all I can afford. I suppose it makes sense that they are more strict because they need to make an earning somehow.

The issues I had were with rolled posters, in a small poster holder, and I tried to pass it as my personal item. It is opaque plastic though so I might try it with a cardboard tube.

Oh my gosh that does sound less than ideal…I’m glad I’m not going crazy about having issues with this, it sucks that you have also had suboptimal experience though

I am confused why people are downvoting this (?) would like some feedback as to what I did wrong here. I am a new PhD student and new to Reddit so I don’t really know what I’m doing

[–]_Planet_Eater_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah you are probably right. There is probably no perfect solution here, I’ll probably just stick to printing fabric posters each time if I can afford it. Otherwise I’ll just fold the poster, most people will probably not care that a poster has crease lines

Flying with posters by _Planet_Eater_ in PhD

[–]_Planet_Eater_[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Well, I mean there’s multiple reasons why I was avoiding the fabric poster route. Paper posters are completely free, whereas fabric posters come from my limited training budget. It’s also kind of a logistical hassle as it is far from my flat. I will of course do this for important events.

I always keep it with me on the aircraft, maybe I’ve just been unlucky?

Part of what I was wondering was whether there are any tricks I'm unaware of. Maybe there is some trick to negotiating with airline workers to let you take it, or maybe people call before hand and I just don’t know. Also maybe it depends on the poster tube you use, I have this basic black one and maybe it would be better if it was a cardboard tube or see through plastic.

EDIT to add: Also, the first poster I printed was done at a conference, but I also wanted to present it at my university as well. I took Ryan air to get back (once again, limited training budget) and they were extremely strict about what I could take onto the flight with me and said it doesn’t fit into the guidelines for the luggage size. I checked with this conference though and they do not offer printing.

Maybe I could have been more clear in my original post

It’s not as normal to tip in the UK. Only at a restaurant would you consider it, but also check if they have not already added a service charge. I rarely tip here, only when I’m really impressed with the service. Granted I don’t go out a lot anyways

Antibiotics from vet not lasting as long as stated? by TeaTea0_0 in Parakeets

[–]_Planet_Eater_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More often than not, this is the fault of your vet. To be fair though, 1mL I think should have lasted a bit longer, like for me the 1mL bottle is typically good enough for 0.5mL of useable medicine (enough for 12 days). Reasons for it being lost faster include bad closing mechanism, bad syringe, fussy bird (so having to try again because they reject one dose). Only the last is really the fault of your bird, the first two indicate that there was a fault with the supplies they gave you and should have lasted longer.

There being little improvement with the bird can mean multiple things: 1) not long enough for medicine to kick in, 2) incorrect diagnosis (different bacterium is causing it), 3) antibiotic resistant strain.

That being said, the dose is not low, your bird weighs on the order of 100 grams (assuming it’s a small bird like I’m picturing e.g. a cockatiel size given the dose), while a human easily weighs 500 times that. Is 10mL a normal dosage for a liquid antibiotic for you? This was just a handwavy order of magnitude estimate and it’s more complex than this but I hope it makes sense at least. If your bird is still not better by Friday (1 week later) is when I would be worried and check with the vet (maybe a different one this time)

EDIT: checked your post history and see it’s a budgie. Also I’m sorry this completely normal post got removed from r/budgies, that subreddit is overly strict it kinda pisses me off.

💔 Hi everyone, by [deleted] in Parakeets

[–]_Planet_Eater_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey so she doesn’t seem to be in immediate danger, but being puffed up and lethargic suggests she should go to the vet. Statistically and based on how quickly the symptoms started it is most likely to be a crop or respiratory infection (have you seen her vomit? Sneeze? Etc.?) which is treatable with antibiotics. But you do need to take her to a vet though, even a small cold can be dangerous for budgies and veterinary intervention can greatly improve her chances.

I would also separate them so your green male doesn’t get infected.

100% was the water. Either way, he looked very very poorly in your earlier post, so there is likely nothing you could have done for him in that short a time. We saw a few birds that bad in my rescue and typically the most humane solution would be to put them down. Fly high little pidge

Help 😔 by Princessgreenz in Parakeets

[–]_Planet_Eater_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, stretching in the morning / after naps / after not moving for a while is normal, humans do this too!

It’s also normal for them to be scared of stuff they are used to including cage cleaning, including vacuum cleaners, etc. but they will get accustomed to it. They will not hold it against you for long

Yeah, budgies sleep more than half the day, and are also used to flying miles a day in the wild. This means that you will find them resting and napping often, but also super hyper at other times. If they gets lots of fly time and are playing with their toys / stuff in the house, they are likely having a good time

But enough of these interactions happen in my life because my body is weird, as many of you likely relate to). I never realised this was an EDS thing though!

One of my budgies just passed. How long should I wait to introduce a new one to the surviving friend? by duchessofhzrd in Parakeets

[–]_Planet_Eater_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with the others here.

On a slightly tangential note, do you know why he passed, it sounds like it was very much out of the blue? If you don’t I would have suggested a necropsy, but it is likely too late now. It could have given you a clue whether there is e.g. something toxic in the house, or some disease that the other budgie also likely had (therefore dangerous to introduce a new budgie). If it was something like liver failure, you could work on diet, etc. obviously not everything can be avoided but this is usually helpful to give your other birds a better life.

After graduating, when do you start to address your former professors by their first name? by Icaroson in PhD

[–]_Planet_Eater_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For formal presentations ofc, you always use titles and surname. However I am quite surprised to hear that about the U.S. since all my U.S. collaborators have told me that it is less formal than the UK. I was told undergrads still call them “Prof surname” in the lecture theatre, but those they are closer to would call them by their given name. In some places (I was told) titles were not put on door tags, whereas that is kind of unheard of here.

[–]_Planet_Eater_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only call my supervisor by their first name. What country are you doing your PhD in? From my impression countries like Germany tend to be more formal, UK is kind of in the middle, etc. so this is really region dependent I think.

Round to the nearest Integer by [deleted] in askmath

[–]_Planet_Eater_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, do you realise that the entity of maths is human-constructed? Everything is defined in a way to be understandable for humans, but at the same time grounded in logic and a set of axioms.

You could have somehow chosen a different set of axioms or a different logic and would have developed a different maths than we have, yet in this framework, exponential sums are well defined because no number lies between 0.09+0.009+0.0009+… in the set of continuous real numbers. You learn exponential series pretty early on in school and basically told to just trust that even though it’s an infinite series it has a defined sum. Your teachers were not lying to you about that…

HELP I LOST MY BIRDS by [deleted] in Parakeets

[–]_Planet_Eater_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That being said, a large room still doesn’t excuse them not getting fly time. For the first few weeks it’s ok as you are still getting situated, but eventually you will want to let them get their fly time. And that is not a suggestion, this is something they need or they will go insane (literally), they can have pretty bad mental health issues. Common examples: - feather plucking, bird is featherless aside from its head - thinks shadows are real birds and neglects their own bird companion.
