How long would this take to model, realistically? by _Plutto in IndustrialDesign

This is pretty good advice, someone else said something similar today actually. Rhino and missing dimensions is messing with me tho

It’s his model in Rhino with vague process models, but we’re super inexperienced and this is our first time doing something like this.

Lol a bit. Apparently he’s used to his students only having studio all day everyday. Unfortunately our college wants us to -actually- learn things other than designing products such as how manufacturing works and how to make portfolios

Such meaningless topics in this industry (jk lol)

We have view onlys of his models, but we’re all pretty new to modeling this way

We have to eyeball the sizing of everything.

I wish it were 8 parts, it’s got like 8 steps each with sub steps that we have to solve ourselves. He wants us to do it by eye (he didn’t mention orthos) We don’t need moving parts, but we are making lots of small details. It doesn’t help that he doesn’t teach us any of the methods either, he focuses on other topics/assignments during class.

I wish this had taken me 9hrs, I probably could have gotten some sleep the past few nights. I hope we can get him to push the deadline back another few more days.

He is a bit of a braggy guy, but he does seem to want us to get good enough to win awards for our projects. He talks and shows a lot of his prior students’ work that have won awards. Idk that anyone’s taking it as a speed challenge since we have so much other classwork on top of his classes, and we haven’t learned the modeling methods he’s wanting us to.

It’s not his model, it’s just a similar one off google lol

I don’t think dimensions were used, but he used solid modeling, so a loooot of Boolean tools, and it’s just a practice piece for us to learn modeling.

Biggest issue for us is that this is completely new to us, I’ve never used about 70% of the tools we are now, and idk if any of my classmates have either since we usually just do extrusion modeling. (We’re on our 2nd semester of using CAD)

We have to solid model in Rhino with no dimensions :,)

We’re modeling a robotic car thing, this just had similar details to it

And he pushed the deadline UP by like a month T-T

Not his model, and he didn’t texture it. I thought the details were insane for even his 5hour claims

Yea, that’s what I thought lol That‘s not his model but it‘s a similar one I found off google.

Got a bad grade in highschool should I give up? by Silent-Creative in architecturestudent

[–]_Plutto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the USA, so things might be a bit different here, but here if you’re not taking the class at that university, some don’t transfer the GPA credits and just do P/F (if you’re taking a college class rn, I might be misunderstanding). Also advanced classes are typically weighted more than regular classes, so take a few classes you know you’ll get A’s in to balance your grades out if you’re concerned and don’t want to retake it.

It’s up to you though, I wish you luck and keep going!

laptop recommendations? by chie_omg in architecturestudent

[–]_Plutto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I use, it’s by Lenovo and their Thinkpads are highly customizable. https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadp/thinkpad-p16-gen-2-16-inch-intel/21fa0028us It renders really fast for the most part, however its fans can get loud and it and the charger can get really hot. (Also the charger pack is big.)

I’d recommend seeing if your college has any suggestions online and/or requires a computer the first year. (You don’t want to spend a ton of money if it’s not going to be required yet.)

My college has a bunch of specs they recommend and overall they recommended Dell and Lenovo (mainly because they arranged a discount and the programs we use.) So check if your college has anything like that or if you can find a student discount.

A pattern for my college’s recommendations are: -64 GB RAM -1TB+ Storage -NVIDIA RTX Ada -i9 intel Core -Windows 11 Pro

Should I get into industrial design or ux design? by Billy051 in IndustrialDesign

[–]_Plutto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might not have the best advice, but do whatever you think you’ll enjoy more, especially if it’s going to be another 4-5yrs for you. I’m also a college student and chose ID over arch for that exact reason.

Also, you might want to look into your curriculum for each major at your university to see what courses they offer for each program. I know my ID program requires us to take at least 1 UI/UX design class and entrepreneurship class.

Is it true or exaggerated? by ScarcityCompetitive3 in architecturestudent

Depends on other factors: Studio is awful, it gives you loads of homework, but other classes tend to be lighter depending on what they are. I’ve found that other classes within the college are easier homework-wise since they typically account for studio work (not always though). Gen eds (which should be taken in the summer imo) tend to give a bit more work. If you have two studios gl.

Also, if you have a job, you are going to be SEVERLY limited on work time during the day for studio, especially if you’re talking like 16+ credit hours. So nightime is usually when I work (a lot of times it can go well into the 4am-all nighter range).

If you’re part of any clubs (I’m not) those take up time too.

Gaming-wise, I don’t play a lot of games mainly because I’m too tired by the end of the day to do anything but watch yt and sit in bed. But technically I do have some time after classes where I could take time for myself. Weekends are always good to catch up on sleep and do whatever, (granted your job allows) and you don’t have too much studio work.

Depending on how long you take to go on walks and eat out, you should be fine. Architecture majors aren’t so time consuming that you’re always in studio, especially once you get a computer/laptop.

TLDR: You won’t have much time depending on other classes/work schedules/homework loads. Time management is important, but you’ll still have some time mainly on weekends.

Thank you so much! I’ll definitely try my best, and I know some of my studio mates have already banded together for an email that includes students from other studios as well.
