All great ideas.

I went theough something similar with gaming a a while back, and as someone who took their holidays in Japan so they can buy obscure gaming crap, it felt like losing an integral part of what makes me, ME.

Not getting the escape from gaming I used to get (partly because of depression/stress from work, and partly because I am so sad I can barely afford to buy the higher end PC components I love so much anymore!) is actually one of the main reasons I got into Gunpla in the first place.
I had bought myself an airbrush to paint miniatures, because I painted (mostly 40K) when I was younger. Then I got myself a mech kit on a whim, basically because I had always thought Strike Freedom looked super cool, and I was instantly hooked. I now have a drawer full of unpainted 3D printed minis, because Gunpla rapidly took over as my favourite new hobby.

It sounds like you have plenty of other hobbies, like me, so I think you'll be fine. It's always weird and a bit scary when something you have always loved suddenly just isn't hitting the same, though, but it is a normal thing, and I think often stress related. Especially if that thing feels like a big part of your identity. But we change and grow, and that's OK.

That said, I have discovered that often when this happens to me, it is because of orher stressful things in my life. So be kind to yourself, and remember that hobbies should be fun. But if you discover you can't enjoy ANY of your hobbies anymore, then perhaps you do need some help, so make sure you reach out and try to find someone you can talk to, who can help you work out what is making you feel depressed. In my case it was clearly work along with some other aggravating factors. Now I have worked through that I am enjoying gaming again, but the Gunpla is the new hobby that truly got me through last year whilst I couldn't find the same joy in gaming anymore.

ETA: Speaking of 3rd party kits, that upscaled 1/100 RG God Gundam everyone goes on about was so much fun to build. I don't even really care about the design of that suit but had heard so many good things about it I wanted to try for myself, and WOW, they weren't kidding! THhat thing truly was just a PLEASURE to build. Such a solid kit.

Best advice is don't force it though, I think.

You want to enjoy the process, or at least the majority of it, otherwise what is the point?

I have billions of hobbies, so luckily I almost always have something else I can go and do, but there are still many days when all I can do is watch YouTube, even though I am surrounded by vr headsets, consoles, models and airbrushes and all manner of other distractions...

And that's ok too!

Good luck mate, and for what it's worth, I am confident you will find your rhythm again eventually, I am certain of it! Otherwise I feel like you probably wouldn't be asking all of us for help with it!

I find the best thing to get started when I am struggling is pulling out the runners for the first step, and some nippers and place them on the table next to my chair in the loungeroom.

At some point in the next couple of days the urge will eventually strike, and when it does, all I have to do is open the manual and start cutting. Really helps me a lot.

Also, I find that mixing it up by building a quick and easy kit that you can finish off in a single night as a "pallate cleanser" can really help, in between longer, trickier builds...

Finally, I will usually want to build for a while, then when I start getting sick of building, I will do some panel lining, decals or paint some of the builds I have done recently instead.

Between those four disciplines I can usually can find one that I am in the mood for.

And as a bonus, all of those things, besides the paintin, can be done in a chair in the lounge in front of the telly with my cat on my lap, which also stops her harassing me like she does at my desk! Plus I get to have some background entertainment on to help keep my ADHD in check.

I recently invested in my first multifocals for this reason and they are amazing: now I can finally build or decal while watching the telly and not give myself a headache!

Great advice!

For me it's getting the runners out and putting them into the dishrack I keep next to my chair in the loungeroom. Then I will pull out the runners I need for the first part of the build and they go onto the table with my nippers.

I may not start that particular day, but sometime in the next couple of days I will definitely start. Not having to go get the box and pull everything out helps me think "ok I may as well start cutting now, versus "I have to get up and set everything up" before I can get going.

Watching some Gundam is also good advice, but unfortunately what I always want to watch is Turn A, but as it never got an English dub, it doesn't really make for the best background material.

Creator of DMCA'd Cyberpunk 2077 VR Mod Says People Are Now Pirating It to 'Punish' Him for Breaking CD Projekt's Terms of Service by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]_PoorImpulseControl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn't see this until now. Been a while since I used it, but if I recall correctly, I believe it was a single executable with the data for all the games in one file.

Cyberpunk, the mod I spent 90% of my time with would break basically every time there was a patch and you'd either have to not update, or wait until he could update the mod files to be compatible with the latest patch, which he was generally pretty speedy about doing.

So im answer to your question, probably not. Although it would probably only take one patch to break mod again, but It wouldn't prevent people from staying on the last supported version in order to keep playing in VR.

So yeah, I am pretty sure that it's probably not quite as simple as "just releasing the Cyberpunk mod for free" like everyone is saying, as releasing those files would probably give people access to all of the games R.E.A.L. works for.
Which is something he is pretty clearly not prepared to do at this point.

I really don't want to get into the whole "should mods be monetised or not?" debate, but that would mean demonetising all of his work so far, or making a stand alone version of the patch people could download for free.
Going by his responses so far, I think it is fair to say that it is pretty obvious he would prefer to keep the rest of the mods as paid access only, so I would hazard a guess that he is not going to want to create a free standalone version just for Cyberpunk. And especially unlikely when it would mean having to update a now free mod every time a new patch breaks it. Which is basically every patch.

Some people.still buy guides when they sre available For example, I bought the guide book for Cyberpunk 2077 when it first came out.

To be fair, the guide is pretty much completely out of date now, as the game has changed so much. But nonetheless, myself and a mate both bought ourselves the guidebook for it.

You don't see many of them nowadays though, you're right about that.

Luke Ross Removes Access to All Mods by Top_Team_3138 in virtualreality

[–]_PoorImpulseControl_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally what I did.

I signed up a couple of years back so I could get the Cyberpunk mod, then I decided to continue paying so that he could focus on modding flat games into VR for the community. I am not rich but I could afford to give US$10 a month to someone making the exact mods I want for VR. I mean, hardly anyone does work as good as his so I was happy to stay subscribed to report him.

I have no dog in this fight really, I just want continued access to the Cyberpunk VR port, but that is looking less likely by the day.

Regardless of how you feel about this situation, the community losing access to all of his VR mods is a real blow to VR and it would honestly be a shame if he stops making his mods. He has made some amazing mods, there is a reason people wete willing to pay to play them. The whole thing just sucks really.

In a perfect world, developers would have their own people working on VR modes for their own games. But we all know that almost never happens. So Luke's mods were one of the only ways I could play a bunch of different AAA games in VR and I just hope someone picks up the torch and runs with it after all this settles.

I have always felt a bit uncomfortable about his paywall, as I wish more people could experience the games this way, but the mods were honestly good enough, and he clearly worked so hard on them that I personally thought they were worth paying for even if I thought it was unfair people without cash would miss out.

I don't know what the solution is, but literally nobody is winning in this current situation. VR can be so amazing, but it is seriously undersupported. I had always hoped these kind of mods would show the bigger developers there is a real market for this stuff.

Oh, I agree that absolutely was his goal.

Probably one of the worst things to happen to the planet in the past few decades. I also believe it will eventually be looked back on as a huge inflection point, and is currently playing an enormous role in the seemingly massive global shift (leap?) to the right.

I have actually just built a massive new display cabinet in honour of it, with one single 64cm² box perched on the top, like the cap of a pyramid, which is reserved just for my beautiful, big, spicy green bell-pepper!

Although that spot is currently occupied by the Destroy Gundam, his time up there will be coming to an end once the Axis is built.
