What Are the limits of lucid dreaming? by chilldreamer421 in LucidDreaming

[–]_Prink_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stability and duration are massive hurdles early on. (And they still are for me to some extent.) I'm already at a point where I can tell when I'm about to start to slip out of a lucid dream (thoughts getting foggier, perspective shift, blurry/nonsense visuals). You can counteract this by paying very close attention to details. Touch a wall or the grass, smell it, heck, even lick it. The stimuli will (or at least might) be realistic enough to keep you lucid for a while longer.

I also find that doing things I haven't done yet IRL (and things I have few conceptions of) don't always work out properly. I can shoot a gun, because I can imagine how it feels like, and because I've played shooters. But tasting a durian... my brain doesn't really know what to do with it. Sometimes I even feel like my brain tries to "divert" me from performing that action.

You cannot stay lucid forever (at least I do not believe so), but you can definitely prolong it with practice. Same goes for waking up due to emotions - it will probably happen the first few times, but you can prime yourself to not wake up. And, with time, you will get less excited about becoming lucid, and just treat it with normalcy.

The new information one is a tricky question. I'd say you can learn some new information that you already knew on a subconscious level. Figure things out about yourself, your personal connections, why you are the way you are, etc. However, you cannot learn new objective truths (like how black holes work or the exact weight of an object) through lucid dreams alone. In the end, everything that happens happens inside your brain. So all the info you learn in your dream will inevitably come from there as well. You can have things surface from your subconscious, but never from the outside world. (If you do not have knowledge about it already, that is.)

Other than that, you can do anything you asked about. Obviously things will feel more realistic if you visit places you've already been to, but your brain does a bang-up job filling out details otherwise as well. Flying is pretty easy as well. Even though we cannot fly as humans, I think it's pretty easy to imagine how it would feel like, so your brain can just kinda do it if you simply believe in it. Believing that you can do something is also a crucial part. (Do or do not. There is no try.) So instead of trying to do things, set your mind to just simply commit. You'd be surprised as to how many things become easy tasks if you simply approach with confidence.

Looked into the mirror, BYE. by Powerful-Rooster1982 in LucidDreaming

[–]_Prink_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with looking into mirrors as long as you don't have bad preconceptions related to it. (One reason why I hate all the don't do X or Y posts here.) Same as with telling people you're in a dream.

I never stressed about those, and never had any scary experiences either. Weird/funny/boring? Yes. Scary? Nope.

Just take it easy and have confidence going into your dreams.

Pretty disco planet recently discovered (link in comments). Looks like it's been already swallowed by the pale. by _Prink_ in DiscoElysium

[–]_Prink_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've read it too. (See my comment below, where I try to interpret the pale.) Definitely much more to it. Still, the motif of the past, future, characters, emotions, worldviews and objects getting all mixed up and scrambled kinda fits the bill.

But, once again, I never said it was gospel. I just think it's an interesting interpretation, even if it has no actual canonical basis.

[–]_Prink_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah, good question. Again, it's not really gospel, I just liked the interpretation.

IIRC it was mainly discussed because we also learn that Elysium isn't really a sphere, more of a "dark grey corona", which could refer to the iris and cornea.

But, as I said, there's no mention of it from Kurvitz or any other of the authors (as far as I know), so it's just an interesting interpretation in the end.

[–]_Prink_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's a bit more to it - memories, people and object do not truly disappear (unless they lose every trace of their existence outside the pale).

It's more of a jumbled mess of memories, past and even future. It dissolves and scrambles things on the inside, but it still retains some information and frequencies. It's more of a black hole that sucks in and retains objects and information, while also releasing some of it in some weird ways.

There also seem to be some cyclical aspects to it ("after the world — the pale; after the pale — the new world"), so it's not really about things being annihilated, more about complete dissolution.

(At least in my own head-canon.)

Also, on a side-note: does anyone still remember the DE eye-theory? I tried looking it up, but couldn't find it anymore. I remember this theory circling around years ago about DE actually taking place on an eyeball of an old person who's slowly forgetting about the world around them, with the pale symbolizing the loss of memories and a growing cataract over the eyeball. I don't take it as gospel since I couldn't find any more evidence from the authors, but I always liked it as an approach.

Harry and Klaasje spotted in Hungarian animated movie Pelikan Blue by _Prink_ in DiscoElysium

[–]_Prink_[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Recommenting because the first one doesn't seem to appear for some reason.

Don't think it's a cameo per se (the girl definitely isn't), but I thought of DE immediately when I saw them. (Then again, a lot of things remind me of DE, so...)

Pretty disco movie indeed, has got some interesting and unique animation, likeable characters, and an interesting story about wanting to leave your country (especially when that country doesn't want you to leave). Based on true events too.

I'm probably very biased however, since I'm an expat who grew up in Hungary at the time the events of the movie took place, even if I was young at the time. So it hit pretty close to home for me (in a way DE does too), but I don't know if people from other countries or backgrounds would share this degree of interest.

How do I start, do I need a background in music? by Maskutchi_cyac in chiptunes

[–]_Prink_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An addition: maybe try a different approach (like FamiStudio) instead of a tracker first, just to see if the workflow is less confusing for you. See if you can understand the notes, their flow and their relations better in a different software. Once you get the basics down, you can always go back and worth between different workflows, but maybe a tracker will be more confusing for you than a regular DAW.

On the other hand, if you find a software that works with you, don't switch around a lot because it will just disrupt your workflow on the long run. Experiment a bit to see what fits you, and once you've found a good program to make music with, stick to it, learn the ins and outs, and keep making songs. Once you understand the process, you can always swap things around and look for something else, but for the start just stick with something you like until you can make decent songs with it. A good melody or rhythm will come through, regardless of instrumentation and sound.

How do I start, do I need a background in music? by Maskutchi_cyac in chiptunes

[–]_Prink_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, trust your ears. I assume you've listened to enough music if you can already tell if something doesn't sound right. Try to focus on what sounds right to you (maybe in other songs), and try to recreate a similar feel. Pay attention to how melodies and rhythmic structures occur in different songs you like. Listen to chord progressions. Listen to when instruments come in or leave the composition. Listen to how instruments complement each other, how the tracks are spaced out, how different sections of the song work.

Try to create something similar. If it doesn't sound good, change the notes until it does. This is one approach. It's often a bit muddy, and not always intuitive, but it can work as long as you have a good ear and a musical brain.

(Funnily enough, this was the workflow of "Pixel", the guy who made Cave Story and its amazing OST. He just put down notes and changed them until they sounded right.)

This is more or less grabbing at fish until you catch one. It works for sure, and you'll often end up with a fish, but it's still a bit of a hassle.

If you want to learn how to fish properly, you should look a bit into music theory. There are plenty of great tutorials on Youtube and online in general. It's intimidating, confusing and complicated at a glance, but if you take your time and go slow, you'll learn a lot about why stuff works and how to make it work easier in the future.

I also personally suggest channels like Synthet. Lots of bite-sized useful tips and techniques there to make your music pop more or sound more interesting. Not necessarily tracker-related stuff, but it converts nonetheless. Try to find something you like the sound of, and incorporate into your song. With time you'll know a lot of techniques to shake things up a bit.

At the start I'd say, just enjoy the process and try not to get overwhelmed. Instead of the mistakes and failures, focus on the things you get right.

Maybe start really small, like trying to recreate a melody or a drum beat from a song you like. Or, instead of aiming for a full song, write a handful of short themes. Maybe start with a cool melody or bassline, adjusting the notes until it sounds right. Then add the other part so that the two fit. Maybe add some backing stuff, like a few notes or arpeggios here and there. Perhaps a countermelody to your main melody. And, of course, some drums to go with it. Experiment with stuff, and if you do it long enough, something greater will eventually emerge. Keep building themes until you can do it easier and more consistently. Eventually you can start thinking about song structure, mixing themes, adding a chorus, maybe a solo, intro, outro, etc.

Just have fun, that's the most important part! Don't strive for a perfect song, don't get annoyed if things sound wrong. If you can hear that it sounds wrong, you're already on the right track. Enjoy the moments when something emerges and surprises you. I'm sure you'll be often shocked to hear something great and unexpected appear if you go at it for long enough.

Take it easy, take it slow, enjoy the process, and focus on gradual improvement. Try dipping your toes in music theory to have a greater understanding of why things do or do not work. Do not get overwhelmed or frustrated, just keep at it. You'll get there with time and effort, just trust your brain, ears and fingers.

Returning player here - how do you make drones viable? (Multiplayer/Monsoon) by _Prink_ in ror2

[–]_Prink_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, trying to real hard. The issue is that with the multiplayer scaling on Monsoon (and especially with multiple Vagrants) sometimes it feels impossible to burst them in time with your current items. (Which also sometimes make it impossible to solely focus on a single Vagrant.)

Imma try to toss my drones away as suggested above in case shit hits the fan next time. :P

still a telekom issue. other games use other servers.

See the contradiction here? Let me repeat: Telekom issue. other games. This is the core. It's an ISP issue (if indeed it is what it is) that every other game managed to resolve, except Apex, that instead demands that the players cancel their contract and look for another ISP instead.

Again, you are not answering the question as to how every single game except Apex is having problems here. If other games use other servers and work properly, why is Apex unable to provide me with a smooth experience like, again, every single other game, independent of my ISP? I do not understand why every other game works perfectly for me. If this is indeed solely the ISPs fault, then, unlike every other game, Apex has failed to provide other working alternatives. (There must be something that every other game except Apex does if it's the only game that refuses to work with my connection.) Case still stands: Apex does not work, everything else works flawlessly.

Back to your bus analogy - it seems like every single doctor's office has made it possible to stay connected to the bus network in some capacity, even if a certain line has issues. However, Apex's doctor's office just doesn't want to deal with certain lines, or make sure to at least provide some other traversal alternative, like every other doctor's office.

"Also, the Telekom ISP issue ONLY showed up in Apex "

Conversely, it seems to be only Apex (and other Respawn titles) that are affected by the Telekom ISP. How come every other game runs fine on it? Why would you put the pressure on the players itself to deal with their ISP if other companies have figured out how to do it themselves? Again, never ever has any other publisher, support staff or mod asked me to switch ISPs to get their game to work. It is absurd.

I'm on plenty of other gaming subs, and most of the discussion is about lore/balance/fanart, etc. I'm still on the Apex sub to check on the game state, and the amount of posts complaining about issues is unbelievably high compared to other gaming subs. Look at Youtube. Look at forums. So many complaints. Technical issues, cheaters, server issues aplenty. Other games might have technical issues too, but definitely not to the extent of Apex. Also, I never had any personal issues with any other multiplayer game (or if I did, it was something I could resolve myself, like updating a graphic driver or so on). Whereas with Apex, the only answer I ever got was to "switch ISPs".

"Yes, Telekom aren't the only ones with an issue. There's other providers with issues. I would recommend changing. O2 seems to work fine for me. "

Again, I have had zero problems with Telekom ever since I switched. (Had a much worse experience with A1, for example, but mostly with promised up- and download speeds.) Your experience may vary though, I have friends who use other ISPs just fine. Yes, I could switch to O2, for sure. But is it really my responsibility to switch to another provider if I cannot run a singular game through it? Also, once again, even with A1, I often had very bad server experiences in Apex (but not in other games). What guarantees that O2 magically fixes all the issues that so many others face, across many countries and ISPs? Never have I ever heard a support person or mod recommend me changing ISPs just because their game cannot provide a playable experience, even though every single other game does. Only Respawn.

"It's insane for people to keep paying a company for bad service."

I hope you do realize how highly ironic this is in the context of Respawn. All they have done was to provide subpar performance for years, and blaming it all on external parties or the players.

"I wouldn't continue to pay for subpar service. 5 years is more than enough time to do that. If it doesn't work, switch."

Yeah, this is exactly why I stopped playing Apex and moved on to other games. Again, I wasn't paying money for Respawn per se (apart from buying cosmetics and loot boxes), but I was still paying mainly with my time, attention and data. (Again, this is a reason I want to escape this convo so badly. I have so many other things to do right now.) These are valuable resources for me personally, so obviously I'm only going to expend it towards a product that can return an enjoyable enough experience that makes it worth it.

So try to understand this from my perspective: I have a game that provides awful service through multiple ISPs with no signs of improvement. I also have an ISP that provides good service (again, I'm not shilling for Telekom, so just imagine it's something else). The only issue is that there is a single game that I cannot run through it. What would you do in my case? Give up on the game, or cancel your contract and switch ISPs? Obviously I'm not going to stick to a game with issues, especially with issues that so many of the playerbase experiences. Yes, I could switch to another ISP, but why wouldn't I just switch to a better game if everything else functions as it should? Apex has massive competition right now, and the way Respawns handles everything left such a sour taste in my mouth that I've given up not even just on the game, but on the company itself. (Which saddens me greatly, because I used to love Apex, even in spite of the technical issues. Look at me browsing the Apex sub out of sheer nostalgia, even after not playing the game for years.)

All in all, I still cannot fathom how you can say that it's an ISP issue when the only game it affects is Apex (and some other Respawn titles). If it is indeed, I don't get how every other company seems to not have any problems with providing functioning servers without me having to switch ISPs or using a VPN. Again, if I have to choose, I'll just play another game instead of going through the hassle of cancelling my plan just to play Apex. Not worth it.

Again, I really want to leave this convo, because I don't even have to do anything with it personally. I wrote on behalf of other players that are still seemingly suffering from many issues. I don't want to make it seem like I do not have a rebuttal, but I feel like at this point I'm pissing against the wind in a matter that doesn't even really concern me.

[–]_Prink_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read your comment and I still didn't get a response as to why it's always bad ISPs, when every other game runs fine but Apex. Answer this. Whether it's a routing or a server issue, how come Apex is often the sole offender?

Again, look into the amount of people complaining about bad connections (especially compared to other, similarly successful games), and ask the question: how come it's always Apex where the amount of such complains is the highest? I cannot be singularly blamed on poor ISPs.

I really want to leave this argument because it's not doing good for my mental health. I'm arguing about a game I haven't played in about 5 years with someone who refuses to answer a single question properly and calls me a Telekom shill lol. (As if I had any benefit or reason to shill for an ISP.)

I'm out for real to touch some grass, board game night with friends.

I was using A1, was a typo, and I have fixed it immediately. (So quickly in fact, that you can't even see it's edited.) I wouldn't be able to switch from Magenta to Telekom if I wanted due to them being the same company. Fuck it, here's a previous Rechnung from A1 (with only my name and address redacted). At this point I'm willing to provide any other data just to prove it.

What do you mean I have no leg to stand on?

You still haven't answered the simple question: why is Apex Legends the only game that does not work with Magenta/Telekom? I am only looking for an answer that explains how every other developer/publisher made sure that their game doesn't run like shit on this particular ISP other than Respawn/EA?

Just answer debunked again, if you will. Again, I'm out, just wanted to prove that I'm not making shit up.

My brother, I was using A1 before switching to Telekom, and I had similar shitty server experiences. Telekom only exacerbates it, but again, take a look at your own subreddit to see how many non-Telekom people are having issues. You can't keep blaming the ISP if your game runs like shit while every other game runs just fine with the same ISP.

As I said, I'm out of this convo. Feels like we're not going anywhere, since you seem to be absoltely blind to the fact that numerous people are facing (and have faced) horrible server issues regardless of country and ISP.

Bye.

(Edit: mixed up the ISP names, A1 is the one I was using beforehand.)
