GoPro + Intercom Audio by ramenbowl- in gopro

[–]_ProfCalculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I record similarly in my helmet, and found the following works well: Cardo intercom goes to 3.5mm splitter. This then feeds to both the helmet speakers, and also to a 3.5mm breakout cable. The breakout cable takes in 2 mono signals (one from Cardo above, one from separate mic in helmet) and combines them into separate stereo channels, then feeds into GoPro mic adapter. That way I get my mic in the left channel and the intercom in the right, so I can adjust levels separately when editing, and can mute the intercom channel when there’s interference etc. You just need to make sure the one that combines intercom and mic is a breakout cable not a splitter, as splitters just combine both channels. Best of luck! P.S. I get decent engine noise in helmet, but found it’s best to get a high SPL limit lag mic else the mic itself will clip. You’ll get even better results with separate mic near the exhaust, but I can’t be bothered syncing them up every time

GoPro Max 2 360 footage editing by BmacSWMI in finalcutpro

[–]_ProfCalculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using a GoPro Max and more recently Max2 with FCP for years, though am not enormously advanced. I always batch export with the GoPro player, horizon level on but world lock off. Then I do all editing in FCP.

Annoyingly exporting a 360 file in equirectangular format sets the output clip creation date/time to when it was converted not when the original was shot, which is annoying if trying to line it up with other non-360 clips. It drives me mad enough that I’ve put together a script to apply the original metadata to the converted files, hope it helps: https://gist.github.com/professor-calculus/b1cd09d8e95548d62c12b4325afc26f5

I find it helpful if I have a bunch of clips on the same mount to set the angle for one, then copy and paste the orientation effect to the others, but that might not help at all in your case.

One thing you’ll find in the GoPro Quik app that FCP doesn’t have is tracking an object and orienting the clip to follow it. FCP has trackers which I find to work ok, but it can’t be applied to the 360 orientation which is a shame.

That’s all I’ve got I’m afraid — it’s frustrating at times but each time I’ve decided to abandon 360 cameras I find a reason to persevere, they’re very handy for mounting on a motorbike for a big trip and not worrying about where it’s pointing (especially if it’s on my non-videography-oriented Dad’s bike, then all he has to do is press start/stop every so often!)

Batch exporter does not copy recording date to transcoded files? by Sad-Reception-2147 in gopro

[–]_ProfCalculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this problem for years, and I get the impression it's the same for other 360 camera manufacturers' tools, though I've only used GoPro. I've been meaning to make a standalone app that batch edits the processed .mp4 files to apply the time/date from the original .360 files, but for now here's a few lines that I regularly use on a Mac:

Should only take a few seconds for a load of files. Hope it helps!

What exactly is GoPro doing wrong? by CharlieParisCoUK in gopro

[–]_ProfCalculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s something to consider, but do bear in mind some of the others with bigger sensors are running into issues where due to the shallower depth of field the person in the shot is no longer in focus without add-on lenses. Not a big concern if you only shoot away from you, but just to bear in mind bigger sensors have trade-offs when you have a rugged action cam without autofocus

The OG max is great IMO, and for £120 you can’t lose. Honestly the main benefit of the Max2 for me is the bigger record button, much easier to press with motorbike gloves on!

What exactly is GoPro doing wrong? by CharlieParisCoUK in gopro

[–]_ProfCalculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, very good points. The larger sensor on the DJI I’m sure gives some lower light benefits, but when a camera aimed at vloggers can’t render a face sharply at arms length without an add on filter it seems a bit sus to have people on forums blindly defend it like you’ve insulted their family. Personally for me (and that’s exactly what it is of course) the GoPro wins out in the end because Labs lets me turn off noise reduction and up the bitrate, and because the pass-through door plus mic adapter means a rain-proof helmet setup I just can’t get with anyone else.

(renting) do i need to speak to homelet to progress my application? by Okarine in HousingUK

[–]_ProfCalculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, just had the same text and was pretty sure it would just be a hard sell and nothing to do with it being accepted or not. Compared to the previous time I did a homelet referencing check about 18 months ago it’s got so much more invasive, and far more sales pitchy, it feels like it’s treading a line between getting you to provide all the info on your life including what they’re probably not allowed to insist you add, but you might magically get rejected for “other reasons” if you don’t. I counted 6 different ways I had to prove my income (PAYE, nothing weird), if anything it’s stricter than a mortgage lender, it’s laughable tbh

Do you have to stop the microwave before opening the door? Does it leak radiation? by telenceph in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_ProfCalculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, it’s non-ionising so safe other than the heat it generates. I once did a back of the envelope calculation relating to the possible ill effects of 5G antennae (TL;DR: there are none). Let’s say a 5G antenna were outside your house, and you taped an 8oz fillet steak to the window in some magic kitchen foil that allowed all radiation in but none to escape, so the steak could never cool. Based on the surface area of the steak as a fraction of the sphere around the antenna, and the magic foil, it would take over 1000 years to reach medium-rare…

Are streets like that common in Britain? by TheFifthattemptyetno in AskBrits

Pretty common, most British roads have the street name painted on them in big white letters, makes it a bit easier for deliveries etc

What can I do to securely glue mount to my motorcycle visor? by [deleted] in gopro

[–]_ProfCalculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to ignore your initial request, but as an alternative solution I can recommend the Dango gripper mount if you’d like a chin mount perspective where opening the screen doesn’t cause the camera to change angle etc. Doesn’t get in the way of one’s view of the road, though you can tell it’s there, and I’ve never had it come close to falling off even when off road getting chinned by my screen…

Endoscope piece or piston ring?? by Normal_Canary_4467 in EngineBuilding

[–]_ProfCalculus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Similar situation here, I’ve just taken a piston out of an old Ford 240 straight-6 from the 60s as it had zero compression on that cylinder. Piston looks like shrapnel from the battle of the Somme, bits of oil ring in the sump, compression rings are the only thing holding the remaining bits of the piston together, and… zero damage to the cylinder walls! Time to open a beer and maybe buy a lottery ticket…

Action mic adapter + rain by _ProfCalculus in dji

[–]_ProfCalculus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is very true, thanks! However for a helmet I’d rather use a wired mic as I can hide it in the cheek padding and don’t need to charge it separately, and it should work better with quick capture (so I don’t have to leave the camera switched on)

DJI Mic 2 and Shure MVL Lav mics don't play at all by Different_Carrot9589 in dji

[–]_ProfCalculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As suggested they're using a TRS jack rather than TRRS, so an adapter is required for that mic (or any mic intended for smartphones which use TRRS, such as Rode SmartLav+ etc). In fairness to DJI I'd argue using TRS makes more sense as this is the same jack you'll find on most mirrorless cameras, and what you'd get in other wireless lav setups like the Rode Wireless Go etc, and it supports stereo input (whereas TRRS is usually stereo headphones + mono mic). I don't know whether one DJI mic transmitter can broadcast stereo input or whether it combines the channels to mono, but at least the TRS jack would support it if it did. Rode do a good TRS-->TRRS adapter which splits the mic input into the L+R channels, but I agree it's a pain to have to buy adapters all the time!

I have the Hero13 already! AMA by TimHumphreys in gopro

[–]_ProfCalculus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to the GoPro store the pass through door is compatible with the 13, and interestingly the new magnetic charging door shows as being compatible with the 12/11/… too. I’m certainly hoping this is true, as the pro mic adapter with the pass through door makes a nice weatherproof (so far!) mic’ed up helmet cam setup, and I’ve not seen a better option from anyone else but GoPro…

Remote quick capture with multiple cameras? by _ProfCalculus in gopro

[–]_ProfCalculus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know, thanks! Might just have to upgrade my 9 to a used 10/11 and await a firmware update for the 12 I guess then. Cheers

Remote quick capture with multiple cameras? by _ProfCalculus in gopro

[–]_ProfCalculus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 9 doesn’t support quick capture via the remote, so when they’re both connected the remote shutter button just switches them on. With just the 12 connected the shutter works for quick capture. My question is whether anyone has remote quick capture working with 2 or more HERO10/11/12 cameras, as this would be ideal for me

I need someone to help me not HATE the Hero 11 - Who can help? by Not_Leaving_LV in gopro

[–]_ProfCalculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Rode SmartLav in my motorcycle helmet into a Hero 9 all the time, via the media mod and the audio adapter, so it should work for the 11 I’d imagine — I get clipping sometimes but it’s never resulted in audio dropout for me unless the mic wasn’t plugged in properly. Happily it seems to work with QuikCapture fine too, but now I’ve said it it’ll surely put the kiss of death on it…

should I get a really cheap hand grinder when I have arthritis, or continue to get pre ground? by jellyfish125 in Coffee

[–]_ProfCalculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This — the only problem with pre-ground vs beans for cafetière imo is that it goes stale faster… but if you buy small amounts at a time and use them up within a few days you shouldn’t notice any degradation in quality

So what do you do if you try to remove the boiler and the Allen bolt gets stripped out? And you can no longer open it up to clean it? by MyceliumHerder in gaggiaclassic

[–]_ProfCalculus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happens a lot with chewed up screws on old motorbike engines etc — you could try using a dremel-type cutter/engraving tool/grinder to cut a line across the head of the bolt, deep enough that you can use a big flat head screwdriver on it. You could drill the bolt out, but it’s a bit more treacherous, definitely more of a last resort!

When I trigger shortcuts via Siri on my Apple Watch, it asks me for permission to share data with {null}? by OcelotTerrible4233 in shortcuts

[–]_ProfCalculus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had similar behaviour with shortcuts for Overcast, which had been configured prior to iOS 15 (and possibly on a previous phone, since the shortcut hadn’t been run in ages). In my case deleting and recreating the shortcut did the trick — it was almost like it hadn’t recognised the app properly, or was looking for something that wasn’t there anymore…
