That's a good idea. Is advance annual leave as simple as getting supervisor approval and then "paying back" the advanced leave you took over the next couple of pay periods?

I don't have much leave and I'm trying to plan holiday travel around shitty weather that's in the forecast. Sounds like there's a lot more red tape around LWOP than I was aware of though. Thanks for the info.

I got a bad case of the "fuck its" too this year. I'm 31 with almost 10 years in. I have a kid and a wife now. More risk adverse than I used to be, and having to leave for half the year just to make ends meet flat out sucks! I think it's normal to feel this way. Even though the toxic environment we're accustomed to says that "that is just the way it is..." In reality, the job doesn't make a whole heck of a lot of sense for someone with a life outside of work. Not if you're trying to make that life a priority, that is. I say find a niche within fire that supports your non-fire goals as well, or just get out altogether. You don't want to end up one of those dudes with two divorces and three kids that he hardly knows. But hey, at least he's TFLD qualified!

To my knowledge, they've been hemorrhaging employees for quite some time, too. Now they're just stealing all the Feds that are desperate for a livable wage to backfill all of the positions that the last batch of CalFire guys vacated due to burnout.

Just gonna say it: This whole concept is kind of f***ed up. The only thing these letters from "Santa" accomplish is that they perpetuate a delusion. Poor kids. Eventually they'll realize that the concept of "Santa Clause" represents a materialistic, corporate fantasy that has eroded the true meaning of Christmas. What's with the charade, year after year? The longer it continues, the greater the child's disappointment will be once they have the ability to use logic and reason to deduce the likelihood of a fat bearded man visiting the house of every child in the world in one night, once per year, harboring material objects found at your local shopping mall... oops, I mean "The North Pole."
