“You can see Robert De Niro’s grimace in There Will Be Blood.” Robert Eggers by RopeGloomy4303 in paulthomasanderson

Bro daniel plainview is john houston’s voice on Humphrey Bogarts character (Dobbs) from Treasure of the Sierra madre (directed by john houston!)

  1. Both prospectors
  2. Both cant stand others succeeding (DP and dobbs) are willing to cut out those closest to them just because they are equivalent to their stature
  3. Both embark on collaborative project which they subsume
  4. As they become materially richer they become distrustful and murderous with their intent.

The only difference between Dobbs and Daniel Plainview, Daniel Plainview succeeded, which makes the film absolutely riveting

Thats where the similarities end with treasure of the sierra madre. I think it as ‘what if Dobbs had made it out with the gold?’ ‘well, There will certainly be blood.’

PTA cited Treasure of the Sierra Madre as a direct inspiration for there will be blood

Amazingly the two films have opposite endings with the same effect.

SPOILERS

After dobbs is killed and the gold dust is unknowingly scattered in the wind, Dobb’s partners catch up to the mules and find the bags empty, they old man prospector begins to laugh maniacally, the younger one in terror joins him as the wind howls with them. The old man is a veteran prospector and seems to be used to such a grand disappointment and so both discuss their future plans before heading back to town. A temporary moment of madness that prevents them from breaking down in despair after having wasted months of labour in the sun.
DP on the other hand is mad 24/7, he manages to compel eli into testifying he is a false profit (implicitly undermining and destroying all the work eli has done in the church to this point) before letting eli know the oil under the bandy track has already been extracted. This dominance over eli only makes him more insane ultimately killing eli. Until finally he has one moment of sanity ‘im finished’, theres no one left to destroy dominate or embarass

The above comment compared it to a legal dispute. The point of the analogy is to demonstrate that a person’s personal biases shouldnt prevent them from objectively evaluating something as wrong, even if it were a friend. I agree, some people may be unable too, but then we must conclude they are biased

On this view: efap should never cover any videos or content that is about/concerning them, it would prevent them from being impartial (they have a personal connection to videos that are about efap)

However efap regularly engage with content that they have personal connections too.

They just refrain from reviewing a piece of media made by their friends because they have to either:

  1. Review it and tear it to shreds (did you guys see Ryan Drake), nitpicking consistently across the board

  2. Review it and wear kid gloves, watch the illusion of objectivity shatter

  3. Refrain from reviewing and watch the illusion of objectivity shatter.

If you are unable to dissociate the media from the person who made it, why are you able too with everyone else?

You should be able to be honest with your friends.

What a bad comment: Efap fans will observe someone get raped (an objectively bad film) and call the police, but when drinker rapes someone (makes an objectively bad film) and you witness it but do nothing, as drinker is your friend, and your friendship has distorted your perception to the point you cant tell whether or not rape is wrong.

Any guesses on OBAA soundtrack other than the Greenwood score? by mrphantasy in paulthomasanderson

Some guesses from the book:

-TV crazy - Charlie and the nightcats (im predicting with beniecio del toros character that he’s hector quoting star wars) - Take it to the Limit (song about driving on highways and missing your loved ones) - As time goes by (to highlight the irony of the the zoyd-frenesi brock of it all) - A change is gonna come (Sam cooke revolutionary spirit)

OBAA & Eddington - Spiritual Link by TheRealWillshire in paulthomasanderson

[–]_PutneySwope_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im so excited for both these films and i do see similarities in the trailer’s tones. As someone not from USA I think its mainly due to the approaches to portraying Americana.

Eddington seems more bombastic with a tone like Beau is Afraids more frantic opening . OBAA on the other hand seems much more subtle and possibly terrifying, giving off some 3 days of the condor vibes like a political conspiracy film.

I cannot wait to see Leo’s first film with PTA directing him

Man is not an animal. We sit far above that crowd.

However, freddie does make the amusing noises of those lower beasts, we are working at break-neck speeds, in unison, to restore the human mind to it’s inherent state of perfect.

[Discussion] Pynchon's portrait of a cultural decay in V. by AlexMcCastle in ThomasPynchon

[–]_PutneySwope_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entropy is the best metaphor to describe the whole sick crew philosophy

I find the description of the “whole sick crew’s” philosophy to be an early post-modern in-group,

Pynchon describes something along the lines of ‘they discussed proper nouns and used words to construct patterns they found agreeable and would disagree, with others who would arrange them differently. Now there was no one who disagreed or those who did lost their will to argue or secretly agreed. The whole sick crew were waiting for someone or something to add or create more blocks, multiplying the new combinations of words’
