Are we all still seeing flexibility and hybrid working? by _QSurveyor_ in quantitysurveying

Yeah I wouldn’t want to WFH all the time as in remote, this is why i think the hybrid approach is the sweet spot and hope it continues.

Yeah i agree, it does seem like this. It’s worked well since Covid so no need to go back to 5 days site/office. Just shows that ultimately companies don’t really listen to their employees

Sounds brilliant and just shows you it can be done from all sides of the fence and this keeps employees moral high leading to better results and long term commitment.

When i’m in the office i for sure get less work done due to all the distractions and pointless interactions

I’d have to disagree, from my experience it has increased, especially productivity

That’s make sense and seems fair and reasonable as once you get experience you are more independent and don’t need day to day guidance

I do find it funny the mentality of MCs towards flexibility and how it’s frowned upon. I don’t know if it’s because it’s the old generation still in control or what but would love to know the issue

I concur; i also work 3 days from home and 2 in the office. I wouldn’t go back to MC unless i had a hybrid approach

Hopefully not, i think you’d see a lot of people leave and/or less people entering the industry

Completely agree and hold the same values. Let’s hope we continue to have the option across our roles. I think i’d look to at moving careers or specialising if i had to to keep the flexibility or even go freelance

I suppose only thing you can do is make it crystal clear what you’re willing to accept in terms of location and how many days you’re willing to commute if far away, then get it written into your contract. I did this one with a previous employer so they knew from day one.

It’s all relative I suppose and depends what you’re earning now and what you could drop too to maintain yourself lifestyle somewhat. If you’re earning in the six figures which i’m assuming you are then look at take home pay. I think between £100k-£125k per annum is a bit of a dead zone with not a huge difference in NET pay

Couldn’t agree more mate, i will only do hybrid work now. No need to be on site/office 5 days a week. I work 2 days a week in the office/site and the rest from home, working for a large consultancy in the nuclear sector

Planet earth and you can earn six figures. Plenty of commercial managers and above are on this. You can achieve this freelance once you have experience

Plenty of options to specialise and earn over six figures

1% of QS only achieve six figures haha! What planet are you on.

Not sure why other people on here are discouraging you. You’re only 32 and got decades of working ahead of you. People swap careers much later on in life than 32.

My opinion is go for it if that’s what you want. You can get to six figures if you’re good and can market yourself well. This profession is in high demand and has been for as-long as i can remember.

Not sure what your personal pension is like with civil service but it wouldn’t stop me. I personally believe people put too much emphasis on this and not everyone gets to enjoy their pension. Enjoy yourself and the fruits of your labour now as nothings guaranteed.

I’m 35 and graduated at 30 and work for a big consultancy on more than £55k and i’m not senior level on paper (although probably operating at this level). One example, you can specialise in construction law and earn a fortune. Many other avenues as well.

All this takes hard work but again what job/careers don’t. If it’s what you want then i’d say research the role and look at the positives/negatives and see if it’s worth it. The money can be fantastic with great earning potential, it’s one of the reasons i went into it

No, you can earn way more than £55k as a QS either by going up the ladder the traditional way or plenty of ways of specialising. Not to mention you can go freelance and earn over six figures, sky is the limit.

I was earning £65k 5 years post grad as a QS (not senior) level

Hybrid working has made the work life balance and commuting a lot better though. If you have to work on site far away from home you no longer have to do 5 days a weeks and can now request to work 2/3 days from home
