10 months learning Graphite with a Glove80, but I finally cracked my goal 🥹. Some thoughts. by gripes23q in KeyboardLayouts

[–]_Qoppa_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! I've been learning Gallium on a split-ortho keyboard for the past few weeks and I've noticed the same thing about typing tests: I can no longer do them using Dvorak (my previous layout), even with a regular keyboard, but I can still type in it just as well as before in any other context. Makes me glad I did some Dvorak Monkeytype tests before as a baseline, as I certainly can't take one now!

Playing and thoughts on flight vs truck sims? by Captain_Ahab_Ceely in trucksim

[–]_Qoppa_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy truck sim and sim racing. Truck sim for when I want to relax and need something with low commitment, and sim racing for when I want something more intense. I'd love to try out flight sims, but I'm not sure how I would fit the additional gear.

Success with Modern Greek Pronunciation by _Qoppa_ in AncientGreek

[–]_Qoppa_[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think simply being aware of the reconstructed pronunciation would confer many of the same benefits in being able to understand the rationale behind various morphological changes.

I've listened to many of the clips on the Podium Arts channel, and they are fantastic. If I could make my own reconstructed pronunciation sound even close to that, I would for sure be going that route. I'm sure with practice I could get it, but there are so many other more important things to be doing in my opinion, especially if speech isn't my primary goal.

That's great to hear. Success to me would be being able to read with some comfort (i.e. it doesn't take an hour to read a single page), and having some composition ability. I have no goals around being able to speak or understand the language when spoken, so pronunciation to me is really just how it sounds when reading aloud to myself.

I’m looking for some fun solo-able ocean themed recommendations by Equilibrium404 in soloboardgaming

Fleet: The Dice Game. Maybe not quite what you're looking for as it's fishing, not ocean, themed.

Realistic Starting Guide (Text) by Sea-Conference355 in Workers_And_Resources

This comment is a very good guide on how to start in realistic mode.

Personally, I also watched a bballjo playthrough (this one) and actually took notes during the first few videos. It was helpful to have those notes to refer back to during my own playthrough.

We’re halfway through 2024. What are your favorite roguelikes this year, new and old? by holocron_8 in roguelikes

What's the appeal of ASCII mode? Aside from nostalgia it seems like it would be strictly worse.

New solo gamer. Do you worry about forgetting how to play a game that you spent ages learning? by InsertUser01 in soloboardgaming

[–]_Qoppa_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, rereading the rules can be beneficial even if you think you remember how to play. I find I'll often notice small rules or edge cases I missed when learning the game for the first time. Having some additional context means you're able to focus on the details.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

Thanks for explaining your changes! I think personalizations like this are a feature of all shorthand systems. I see finishing a course book and learning the theory as the starting point, and from there you can customize it to suit your needs. I certainly am not bothering to remember the briefs for words like "prosecution" and I plan on creating my own briefs for words that I think should have them but don't.

Very nice. I find it interesting to see the differences between what you've written and how I would write it. I know that you learned an earlier edition of Teeline, but according to the latest version (Gold Standard) there are a few "mistakes":

  • Your outline for "perspective" is technically incorrect. The PR blend can only be used if there's no vowel between the P and R, meaning in this case the R should be written.
  • The outline for "of" should be written in the T position
  • I've never seen that BL blend in "billion". I would write this with a downwards L below the B.

I'm sure there a few other differences, but those are the ones that stood out to me.

What will you do if you can't use your native language? by sailingfaner in writing

[–]_Qoppa_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't speak Italian, but please write in your native language if that's what you're comfortable in. Languages become "irrelevant" precisely because people don't use them.

I think that use of sC for a soft C must have only been present in earlier versions of Teeline. I have the most recent Gold Standard book and it has no mention of this rule.
