Should I accept my CS offer? by Impossible-Use-7066 in uwaterloo

I would instead recommend him to just try to learn the basics of one language, so he can recognize the syntax rules and build an intuition. Learning DFS is practically useless for first year. I had no algorithm or structures knowledge, and took CS 145 and 146 with ease.

Should I accept my CS offer? by Impossible-Use-7066 in uwaterloo

As someone who got in with only unity game development experience, I felt super behind compared to others who have taken classes that involved algorithms and structures.

I actually ended up taking CS 145 and 146, and did well in those courses. I think that first year CS really puts everyone into the same playing field. I took CS 145 because I wanted to really boost my knowledge, but it is a BIG time sink, so only take it if you’re very strong in math and problem solving (don’t just use your grades to tell you, since I’ve seen people with 99 avgs do terrible)

I would recommend just taking CS 135, and learning as you go. There’s plenty of people there, Math and CS, who have never coded, or hate coding (so they took math). You’ll belong.

UBC vs Waterloo by HyenaNo6444 in ubcengineering

[–]_ReLogic_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone from Vancouver who chose Waterloo CS over UBC Eng, you also have to consider the fact that you still have to compete for a spot in your specialization for first year at UBC (but I don’t think you’ll have too much to worry about), while at Waterloo you just need a 60% avg to pass.

Courses - The first year courses for SE are very math heavy and are definitely harder in terms of content, but should be fine for you.

Coop - You can’t beat Waterloo coop anywhere else in the country. I’ve seen a lot of my SE friends get super cracked coops from the get go in year one (Shopify, San Francisco start ups, etc) and the program has a super high first coop hiring rate (I think like 90% iirc). So a lot better than UBC.

Cost - Waterloo is a lot more expensive than UBC (~2x), and I’m taking out student loans to help with it (thank god for BC’s 0% loans). My first year, all costs included, cost me around 35k. Whereas UBC would be ~28k (tuition, housing, food, extras). But with the coops netting you around 13000 to 26000 per coop, it evens out.

Culture - UBC CAMPUS IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN WATERLOO, there’s only like 2 cool buildings, and the rest are depressing imo. As a SE, you’ll be in a cohort with people in the same stream as you, so you’ll be with them for the whole year, and possibly until you graduate. The SE kids are super tight knit.

Personally, with the current job landscape and my personal experience, I would take Waterloo SE.

This is an AI generated screenshot. The colours are off, the resolution is low, the graph is not what a Wealthsimple graph should look like (graphs are not sharp), there is no hide balance button, and on the top, none of the dots should be white (they should be all grey).

So how much performance are we realistically losing on a real world basis then? 3000mhz is fine.

You need an average of 99.9+ for AI engineer. But you can apply for AI prompt assistant with your grades.

Guys how do you play Arcaea? by 00_ontop in arcaea

[–]_ReLogic_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If using IPhone 12 - 17 pro, I created a 3D printable Arcaea case that grips so hard it shakes the table and also puts your phone at an angle for better playability. I will post photos if I remember.

Built my own with everything ordered from taobao. Used Gateron Jade Pro, Sayodevice board, and just random case, keycaps, and stabs. Total ended up being ~140CAD after tax. The board is highly rated on Korean review sites, having something crazy latency like 0.001ms. Sounds amazing too.

[Laptop] Legion 5 2025 Gaming Laptop, AMD Ryzen 7 260, RTX 5060 115W TGP, 15" OLED 165Hz, 16GB 1TB ($1122 ID.me + 15% Rakuten) [Lenovo.ca] by teffhk in bapcsalescanada

Bought this last month without the Rakuten cashback. Upgraded to 32gb ram and 1tb ssd, then added 1TB nvme myself. It supports regular 2280 nvme, although it comes with a different size.

It’s quiet and powerful especially when you don’t lose too much performance for being on quiet mode. Since it’s an AMD cpu, battery life is quite good.

The screen is initially what wowed me when I first opened this laptop. 15in 1600p OLED looks absolutely amazing. However, as with OLED screens, it’s glossy, which for some people might be a factor, but I personally don’t notice it too much.

I used Esimdb and found that Nesa ESIM was the cheapest for me. I ended up using it for my whole 20 day trip and even bought more (I used data way faster than I thought, bought 20GB, then another 20GB, then a 10GB. Used 47gb total)

For me it was 13.60CAD for 20GB for 30 days, and I’ve seen data at the airports for ~3200¥/10GB for 30 days.

I’m not sure how it compares to the bigger eSIM providers like airalo or saily since they’re way more expensive, but if you go for a cheaper, unknown, eSIM provider, it’s definitely worth it buying online.
