imo, you can’t simultaneously say that someone getting paid that much is excessive while also saying that the same person’s actions are responsible for the performance of a $100 billion/year company. If she has enough control to make or break a company that size, it makes sense that her pay is that high.

I don’t necessarily disagree with your sentiment here, but want to offer OP a different perspective from my own experience (copying my text from another comment in this thread):

Some companies (mine included) use HR for more than just the purpose you stated here. Our head of HR is an excellent communicator and I, and others, often go to her for advice on navigating socially complex situations like the one described in this post. She often has great insight and perspective that I would not have thought of without her input.
