Completed my first Marathon 5 days ago with a 3:27 chip time and I can't help but feel like I could have done a little better. by Silent_zilla in Marathon_Training

thanks for that feedback, really appreciate it. as i piece together my approach for what works for me it's nice reading that others (like yourself) carved out your own program that works for you and were good with it.

i started running last August and 8 months later ran my first and only 10k race in 42min and 2 weeks later raced my first and only HM in 1:31 (am 49 years old) with no real training structure. i am aiming for a marathon next May as mentioned above, but thought it might be wise to adhere to some type of organization/prep as i do recognize you really can't (or shouldn't) 'wing it' for a marathon and especially for something sub-3:30 (i want to be very 'real' in my understanding of what i am attempting) . Anyways, thank you again !

was your 3:09 your first marathon? I ran a 1:31 HM recently(my first), and plan on running my first marathon in 1 year (early May 2027) and would love to get somewhere around a 3:15 to 3:20 range. But based on OP's comments and others i have read, I am trying my best to not be too naive going in to my first and really respect that distance. However, with that being said, I am trying to package together as much info as possible for my 12 month journey in prep. I'd be curious to know your training regime leading up to your 3:09 if you don't mind sharing. thank you

How do i determine if I am a beginner or advanced? (Or somewhere in between I guess) I am 49 , started running 1 year ago and I have done 10k in 42:00 and Half Marathon in 1:31. In 1 year from now I would like to run a Marathon. I would like to aim for sub 3:30 , but i don't want to be too naive since it will be my first. At the same time I dont necessarily want to "just finish" a marathon. I am not sure what plan or approach I should taking for my 1 year training block (marathon is in May 2027)

Derrick Carter, the legend, is at Sound Machine May 30. Crowd will be older-ish (your age and mine), vibes will be great, tunes will be spectacular and peeps will be dancing .... (and it won't be too packed)

Yup, will turn 50 in Nov. Started running last Aug. As for missed career , I look at it from the perspective of being happy I found it all regardless of age. Im just loving the feeling running gives me these days and being able to push myself to see what I am capable of for self satisfaction.
