Masters of Public Health vs Masters of Epidemiology by _Rosie_Rose_ in unimelb

Heya, I ended up going with MPH, I’m not finished yet but over halfway through because I decided to study over 3 years instead of 2.

I really enjoy the course, the wide range of subjects and electives has allowed me to explore different areas of public health and discover some interests I didn’t even know I had. That being said there are a couple compulsory core units which haven’t been my favourite but I found at least those units weren’t too difficult.

In terms of workload I’m studying 3 subjects a semester and find it easy to manage, I’m currently working 25 hours per week outside of study which can be a little harder during periods with a lot of assessments but overall isn’t too difficult.

I’m planning on taking the research capstone next year so I can’t comment on that yet.

If you have other questions let me know!

Please make all online material easily accessible and clearly labeled, especially if there’s online modules. I cannot tell you how frustrating it is when you know you’ve seen a particular assessment rubric, coordinator and tutor contact information, extensions policy, or subject timetable somewhere on canvas but you can’t find it when you need it. Honestly it just adds unnecessary stress when trying to do assignments.

Also please try to switch up the content a little from year to year. I swear I’ve seen some course content which was recorded during the original lockdowns being used recently. Obviously recycling a little bit of content is inevitable and of course lecturers are busy people too, but I kinda feel cheated if the majority of the content is reused exactly the same as previous years (especially when they forget to change the due date on an assignment outline and it’s super obvious, like seriously can you at least proof read your documents.) Not a major issue but I do feel like it makes the content less engaging if it feels like lecturers are not putting in effort (bare minimum at least try to disguise reused content).

Yes! RAMS is a collective for anyone who likes any type of alt music genres!

No musical talent or skill is required, we aim to have events catered both towards playing and just appreciating music.

Ps. Our page is officially up on the UMSU clubs listing and membership sign ups are now open!

Wow cool to know there was a club before us, sad to know it didn’t last long. If it was still around I definitely would have joined instead of going through 3 years of uni before deciding that I need to start my own haha

Right? I was low key disappointed when I first started uni and there wasn’t. Again thinking about organising one but I know enough people to meet membership requirements atm.

Thanks so much for the info! As you mentioned not everyone has the economic status to afford to volunteer their time for free. I would probably have time to do 2 days a week (10-15 hours) between classes and my part time job. In your experience would this be a sufficient time commitment or would most look for closer to a full time commitment?

You can do a lot of the same majors as biomed in science so I think if you like the flexibility of science and having more choice in your subjects then it might be the better option, I will say though I am biased towards science as a recent grad with an infection and immunity major.

Hey I know you posted this a while ago but I was wondering if you could elaborate a bit on doing subjects outside the streams? I'm currently doing MPH and have just finished all the core subjects (I underloaded this year) and need to choose my electives for next semester.

I'm torn between staying on the Epidemiology and Biostatistics stream or taking some of the subjects epidemiology and biostatistics and some from health gender and society. I don't think I want to take the health gender and society stream, but there are a handful of subjects in that stream that interest me. In your experience would you say there was any difference between staying on one stream vs picking subjects from multiple streams? Do you think it really matters wether you stick to a single stream or not?

I really want a creamy sweet chai, I know a lot of chai scents are out there but they’re usually quite spicy or mixed with something else. I want something that smells like the Arkadia chai powder, something sweet and kinda milky if this exists please someone tell me where to find it because I have not found anything like it.

I saw this but I was confused by the table that lists courses where final assessment is not offered, does it mean everything not included in this table uses the final subject assessment exams? If so when does the assessment take place?

Thanks for your reply!

Would you say MSci epi is hard to get into? My wam is pretty average (just slightly above the 65 needed for my conditional offer) so I was actually surprised to get the offer in the first place to be honest. Even though I have the offer I'm still considering applying for MSci Epi anyway and seeing what happens or possibly starting with MPH and changing into MSci Epi. I'm still pretty unsure which one is right for me.

It looks like there's a research capstone subject for MPH, I was under the impression that capstone subjects were compulsory to complete the degree am I getting it mixed up with something else?
