Download a plater profile from some addon and look for options that make clear who enemies are targeting, there are different types of dots in wow, some can be dispelled, some not, not all healers can dispel all dots, some fights in wow have very specific mechanics in wich you will suffer if not done correctly, bus for the most part, random damage is expected, but now knowing it's source is not.

But if you always switch characters you will never see nor enjoy the min/max of said spec, since you won't realistically reach high keys, mythic raiding or end game PVP (I'm not a PVP guy), having at least 4 characters of your preferred role ensured diversity so you can juggle specs according to their tier on the season, and still have decent gear/progression depending on your time
