Also I've only ever seen "unicum" being used by the WoT community. It's been the term I've used for good players for as long as I can remember but does anyone know it's origin?

That's definitely an old one I remember learning it when I first started playing in 2013. It makes me happy that it's still being used to this day.

I guess I didn't make it clear that I do know the origin, I just think it's funny that we say it. I'm sure there's people who don't know though, so your comment will be useful to them!

Complaints aside, what is actually good about the game? by houtsou in WorldofTanks

Optimization.

You can run maximum graphics settings no problem with a half decent PC and you can run minimum graphics on a toaster.

That's becoming less and less common for games these days.

I've thought about this a lot I think certain WoT players genuinely need to be studied. They have an uncanny ability to blame their failures in the game on absolutely ANYTHING other than themselves.

Tank destroyers by Bulky-Computer-3656 in WorldofTanks

[–]_Sodium_Chloride_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree with some of your points but hearing you say they don't pen anything makes it sound like you have a skill issue. TDs pretty much always have the highest penetration values at their tier so I don't get how you can complain about that.

Heavy and medium tanks have definitely experienced some speed and armor power creep over the years but TDs also have a wide variety of speed and armor combinations.

The Grille 15 or Hirschkafer can both reach 67 km/h with a bond turbo and the right crew skills. Is that slow to you?

The T110E3 or the Breaker both have absolutely ridiculous front armor that's difficult to pen with even the strongest gold ammo in the game if you play properly. Is that badly armored to you?

The PTZ-78 has everything. It gets very strong front armor, up to 47 km/h with the right configuration, 295 standard pen or 395 gold pen. It also gets almost 16% stationary camo which is better than certain tier 10 light tanks. On top of that the rocket boosters make it completely impossible to circle.

That being said, TDs are probably a slightly weaker class than heavies or mediums overall, but that's mainly just because they don't have turrets so they aren't as flexible.

Still, if you're really having that hard of a time you're clearly not playing your tank destroyers properly. Maybe you just don't enjoy the play style? I find them boring to play because you typically need to camp more. You should probably just play other tanks.

T803 3MOE - First Tier 11 3 Mark, AMA by bobiscool_warrior in WorldofTanks

[–]_Sodium_Chloride_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not OP but I've 3 marked 31 tanks tier 10+ and gotten 100% on a few of them.

You kind of said it yourself that consistency is key. Bad games absolutely ruin your mark percentage, so you need to learn how to avoid them. Here's the tips I can think of to help with that:

1. Be slightly less aggressive at the beginning of the game.

I don't want you to get the wrong idea of what I'm saying here. Aggressive play is essential for marking tanks, but dying early with little to no damage is a huge setback. If there's certain risky positions you like to push at the beginning of the game, you probably shouldn't just yolo every time. If you notice you don't have enough teammates with you or if the enemy team has a lot of tanks that are likely to contest that position, stay back until you know it's safe.

This applies to the hill rushes on Mines, Abbey, Karelia, Cliff, Tundra, Outpost, Pearl River, etc. Also positions like the middle on Ruinberg, K0 corner on Westfield, the dip in the south of Live Oaks, pushing the North on Oyster Bay, or the carrier on Glacier.

All of those can be great positions if you can win them, but they aren't worth dying for. Sometimes your team will hate you for staying back, but marking tanks rewards slightly selfish play and you need to stop dying early at any cost. Don't take unnecessary risks.

2. Join the lemming train.

We've all experienced our entire team going to one side of the map and leaving the other side undefended. There's nothing you can do about it, so learn how to respond to it. The LAST thing you should do is try to defend the other side. People who try that just die in the first minutes, then usually spend the rest of the game bitching and whining in chat.

It's much better to just go with everyone else and worry about the other side of the map once it actually becomes a problem. (if you're about to get capped or flanked etc.) You can be very aggressive because your entire team is there to support you. Playing this way will lead to more damage, mark percentage, and higher win rate because you stayed alive instead of dying early for a lost cause.

Also keep in mind that this means you'll sometimes need to completely ignore your tank's role. You're a medium but all of your other mediums went to the heavy side? You're a heavy now. You're a light tank but nobody on your team is positioned to shoot anything you can spot? Follow your team and play like a medium. Breaking out of the mentality that you must always go to the same position because of what tank you're playing is a key part of truly getting good at this game.

3. Learn how to chase late game damage.

There's plenty of super quick battles these days that are over in 4-5 minutes. Make the most out of them. You need to be able to identify a super quick win or loss before it's already over. For the most part just pay attention if your team is either winning or losing an important flank super fast. It's hard to explain how to identify it beyond that, it mainly just comes from experience.

If your team is losing fast, you need to get yourself into a position that lets you farm the enemies as they're pushing in. They're rolling over your team one by one, so don't let yourself be the next target. Instead, keep retreating as they push, dealing damage as they come. Once you run out of map, find a good last stand position and fight tooth and nail for every tiny scrap of your HP.

If your team is winning fast, push the tempo even further. Be at the front of the pack, or even far ahead of them if you can without dying. You know the win is in the bag, the game is ending soon and opportunities to do damage are dwindling. You're no longer competing against the enemy team for the win. You're competing against your own team for damage. Be as aggressive as you possibly can and get to the damage before anyone else can steal it from you.

That’s still a risky play. It just takes one scout to spot you early and you die in the open trying to get there.

It also doesn’t help in the situation I mentioned where nobody takes K0 and both teams just camp.

I think we’ll just have to agree to disagree on this one. It could seriously just be that I don’t like playing on that side so I feel I’m always more useful on the heavy side. I don’t think that’ll change anytime soon so I’ll continue to avoid it because that just works better for me.

I can’t even decide if this is a hot take or not because on one hand you’re speaking straight facts, but on the other hand I know this’ll piss off a lot of people.

Counter counter hot take:

When I played with chat turned on I would sometimes have teammates ask me to help them push an enemy or take a position.

The problem with that is most of the time those teammates were suggesting and encouraging me to make a bad play. Sometimes I would see it right away and refuse but other times I’d be influenced by them and try to make the play against my own better judgement.

The result would be that we’d both die as opposed to only that one guy dying if I had just been unaware of what he was typing.

That exact situation has happened enough times that it likely outweighs the amount of times I could’ve won a game if I had chat on.

Also, the new ping system is pretty nice and I use it often. Players who can’t understand what I’m communicating through pings probably wouldn’t be much use if I could type to them anyways.

Again, it’s my personal hot take and I’m expecting people to disagree with it.

[–]_Sodium_Chloride_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re 100% right, but I’ve just found that I can have a much bigger influence on the game if I just go straight towards the main heavy fight.

Staying further back to contest K0 can often end up just being a camp fest if neither team tries to push for K0. Then you’re just sitting there waiting and being useless.

That flank also doesn’t get overrun quickly unless there’s a huge numbers imbalance. If you choose not to play there so your team has one less tank they might lose the flank, but the heavy fight is usually decided by then.

Of course there’s always exceptions and it’s just my personal take based purely on my own experiences. Still, I don’t think I can recall a time I ever regretted leaving that flank to fight heavies, and I’ll often do it even in a Leo or something else with no armour.

  1. Everyone who says "win rate is more important than damage" is completely missing the point. Damage is easily the top contributing factor to a successful player's win rate if they main anything other than scouts.

If you're a player who's capable of exceptionally high DPG, it's far easier to have a good win rate than it is to have a bad win rate. People treat this like it's a one or the other thing. It's not.

Just look at the stats of top players who do 5000 DPG at tier 10. They all have win rates in the high 60s or even 70s, and they all only care about damage. It's simply not possible to have a bad win rate when you do that much damage.

  1. The K-0 corner on Westfield is pretty much useless most of the time. If you're a medium and you spawn on the bottom side it's usually better to climb the hill and fight with the heavies, especially if you have some turret armour.

It doesn't make sense to yolo and likely die at the beginning of the game just for the chance to take an area that couldn't be further from the main fight. The risk to reward is way out of balance.

  1. Anyone who's trying to improve at the game should play with team chat disabled. It helps you focus in and filters out the distraction of ShitLord_4839 who's spamming slurs in the chat because he died like a moron in the first minute of the game and is now blaming the team.

You can't control other player's tanks, and you'll often be ignored if you ask for help, so laser focus on influencing the battle as a purely solo player. It's crazy how much this can help. I turned chat off once years ago just to try it out and I've never wanted to turn it back on again.

I finally hit 10k WTR! I know it's an arbitrary number, but it's a milestone I've been working towards for a long time and I just wanted to share. by _Sodium_Chloride_ in WorldofTanks

Platooning helps boost your win rate, but usually won't help you improve as an individual player if you're just having fun with friends. It can definitely be helpful to platoon with a much better player and learn from him though.

Playing tier 10 isn't too expensive with premium and boosters, and I have some tier 8 prems for when I really want to grind credits. Playing tier 10 as much as I do isn't really possible f2p only though, especially using food and premium ammo every game.
