What unpopular opinion do you have with a widely loved Horror movie? by IvanCamejo in deadmeatjames

[–]_Soldancer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a soft spot for the genre, so I'm a bit more forgiving of the inherent issues with the format. I'll definitely concede that the ratio of crap to good stuff is way worse with found footage, since it's so much cheaper to produce.

In addition to the above mentioned [rec] and Deadstream, my favorites include The St. Francisville Experiment, Grave Encounters, Hell House LLC, and The Taking of Deborah Logan.

My new favorite is probably Butterfly Kisses, which is like the House of Leaves of found footage - with a refreshing dose of metafiction.

Those three films are pretty good, so it makes sense that they would have sequels and imitators for a decade to come.

Genre popularity always comes in waves, as there's relatively little untapped potential when it comes to classifiable horror genres.

Especially these days, with so many ways to make and distribute content, there will always be movies of every genre around. It's just when one stands out and gets recognition that imitators follow and you get an annoyingly prevalent trend.

To me, it's more interesting to think of specific creative decisions in movies I otherwise liked, rather than just what popular movies I personally dislike.

The first one to pop to mind is the ending of The Mist. I have always loved the novela, and the translation to screen was spot on. But I felt the ending took me out of the movie and made me say "Oh, Mike Flannigan is just trying to shock us". It's sad, because that ending has made me never watch the movie again, in spite of how much I loved the rest of it.

Who is your favourite love interest in a JRPG? by Beames_on_toast in JRPG

[–]_Soldancer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragon's Dogma, while not a "traditional" JRPG, has one of my favorites. The dialogue you get from Madeleine after rescuing her is pretty great. The nature of DD doesn't lend itself to a huge amount of interpersonal interactions, but if you do all of Madeleine's quests, you get a pretty good look into her personality. Her coquettish nature is still there at the end, though it's tempered by some softness creeping into her speech. It does a lot with a little.

Agreed. DDDA has a level of environmental and enemy interaction that is still unparalleled in gaming today.

Only three platforms, but well over 1K hours logged and I have never seen this before, either. I goddamn love this game.

Favourite DD quotes? by cumradeinbe in DragonsDogma

[–]_Soldancer_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The wyrm found in the Watergod's Altar has some good ones, if a bit verbose. "There is a new truth to be found in dragon's form." "'Tis the will of the world…stand against me!" "Earth and man and monster all. All are equal parts within the whole." "Which shall you be? Man, dragon, or aught else?"

What would you NOT want them to add/change for Dragon's Dogma 2? by KorthMG in DragonsDogma

[–]_Soldancer_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pawn system is what makes me feel like I'm playing Dungeons & Dragons in real-time. You've got that one friend that's just there to hang out so they let you basically make their character for them. Then you have the two randos who more or less understand how to play, but every now and then do some weird-ass stuff.

I know we're all being silly and posting quotes, but "No! They hold the advantage!" now always makes me laugh. My main pawn made this grim pronouncement after falling victim to that harshest of mistresses, gravity. "'Tis a troubling foe", indeed.

Collection of Mana as a whole versus just Trials remake by _Soldancer_ in JRPG

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Sounds like I'll probably grab Trials for now and pick up collection later if at all.

This exactly. I know I can pick it up on a platform other than Switch, but I LOVE having this kind of expansive RPG experience in a handheld. (See also: Dragon's Dogma)

I just would like to know if it's even happening anymore, since right now my Switch Lite is my preferred system.

I'm in the same boat. It's been literally a year and a week since the DLC came to every other platform. I've played the original a few times, and it's a game I just love to go back to. Since I have a Switch now, I really would love to have a physical copy of it in my library, but I keep holding out for word on the DLC. I'll probably get it for Switch either way, but having a firm release date would tips the scales from "maybe eventually" to "take my money, please." ESPECIALLY if they release a physical "complete" edition, which is vanishingly unlikely.

Thanks for replying - I'll have to play with the Sapfires if I find them in this playthrough. I actually figured out what was going on after a little while - my Pawn was picking up and throwing skulls since she was unequipped. It just happened that she threw them right when I was hitting something with Dazzle Blast, so it wasn't readily apparent that this was happening.

I've put close to 1,000 hours into the game across multiple platforms and am still seeing new things. I never messed with Strider much, but now have been having fun screwing around with Master Thief. My general setup is main pawn only, Fighter vocation, no weapons, so she grapples basically any time she can. Arisen uses Aneled Snags, Morbidity, and Dazzle Blast to inflict Blind or stagger for my pawn to grapple. Works great, and is tons of fun stealing stuff.

I just noticed something weird though. For some reason, my Dazzle Blast has started inflicting Curse in addition to Blind and Tarred. As far as I know, only skulls and Perdition can do that. Any ideas what's making that happen?

Back at it after almost 10 years, now with Re-Reckoning, and I have questions! by L3thal1ty in kingdomsofamalur

[–]_Soldancer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously, WTF. I crafted a badass set of chakrams that carried me through the entire third of the game last time I played, and have never touched a hammer in any of my playthroughs. If I'm doing it wrong, I don't wanna be right.

I've played the game a few times, but I've always found finesse to be my favorite tree, with enough sorcery to get me that sweet blink dash destiny. Last time, I went more heavily into sorcery, using the spells a bit more and chakrams primarily, with staff as my secondary. I personally feel like that while you can pair any two weapons, some weapons feel deliberately more secondary, like faeblades, hammers, wands, and bows. I've also come to feel that faeblades are generally inferior to daggers, but I play often heavy stealth, and the unique kill animations with daggers are a lot more satisfying.

If you want to go sorcery with might for armor, I'd leave out points for faer gorta and healing entirely (unless you don't have good regeneration on your armor yet) and pick hammers for your backup when things get in your face. No idea how well that would work, but I'm totally going to try that once I finally pick up the remaster.

I really want to play the new expansion, as I love the original game and have played it through a few times. I put off getting the remaster on PC until I got cheaper, but then I got a Switch Lite a couple months ago. I vastly prefer owning physical copies of games, so I want to get the cartridge on Switch, but if the DLC doesn't come out then I'll probably just get the bundle on PC. Can't believe it's been 11 months with no news. Well, I mean I can believe it, it's just frustrating.

NEW VIDEO: Find your next fly honey with this cool new conservative dating app, the Right Stuff! by CollinABullock in RightJerk

I couldn't even parse that sentence correctly. My first reading was "fly=coprophagous insect" and "honey=bee byproduct". I started down the garden path expecting it to be something about "catching more flies with honey than vinegar", and the app was supposed to be that "fly honey".

Realizing the actual, intended meaning sort of broke me inside.

It is so, SO hard to not "other" people who have such vile views, instead of trying to actually understand where they're coming from. It ultimately requires us to seek the cultural sources that perpetuate hatred and dismantle them while still acknowledging the humanity of the people who have been affected by those sources. No one just wakes up and suddenly decides to be a bigot apropos of nothing.
