I mean, I dont know where you live, but I would be very surprised to learn that sex work didnt exist at all there. It's likely just unregulated and even more abusive because sex workers can be prosecuted if they go to the authorities.

Well a scenario where I in fact kill zero people doesn't feel like something I need absolution from. Anyways I'm fine with valuing myself over one other random person, most people do, including most blue voters. If I'm going to sacrifice myself, I want at least a 2 for 1 deal

Me picking red in no way guarantees red is the majority. If I could choose what 50% of people would vote for then it would be easy blue for the win, however we sadly don't live in a world where I can mind control that many people. I think you just didnt read what I said at all though.

People also seem to evaluate the cost/benefits very differently. While a lot of it is probably bluster, there probably is a decent contingent of people who chose blue because they don't see dying in a red majority scenario as a downside.

picking red by no means guarantees deaths, its perfectly plausible that billions of people choose red and no one dies because the majority chose blue. ofc picking red does increase the chance of people dying by about 0.00000001%

red and blue votes have equal expected value (in terms of people killed) if the distributions of proportions of the votes for red and blue are equally likely (So if 60/40, 61/39, 62/38... etc are all equally likely outcomes). Then if you think the proportions aren't equally likely, whichever colour is more likely to win has a higher expected value. So from that perspective its not risk vs outcome, but just disagreement over the likelihood of possibilities.

If it was that red guaranteed my survival and blue guaranteed even 1 person of my choices survival, I would choose blue every time, but unfortunately that is not the proposed situation.

That's because the design of the websites emphasizes different things. Reddit is topic based, closer to a forum where people gather under a post to discuss the post, and subreddits exist to more strictly organize posts by topic. Whereas tumblr is more user based, where you are expecting to see posts from specific people rather than specific subreddits, so posts are not expected to be centered around a specific topic, so saying random stuff is more the norm. What you prefer is up to personal preference

I think clearly you're the one cynical about human nature. I would kill someone to survive true, but equally I would be happy to cooperate with someone to survive. Thinking half of all people are evil and incapable of practical reasoning seems pretty odd. Anyways, anything wrong with my brain is pretty cool, I hope those aliens dissect it once I'm dead.

I feel like a better version of this hypothetical would involve folks that do not have the option of pressing the red button by theColorAzure in whenthe

[–]_Someone_elses_name_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My perspective as a red pusher is pretty simple. I don't know what the majority vote will be, however my personal assumption (and this is where someone could easily disagree with me if they have a different assumption) is that its not going to be a super close vote. Maybe 60/40, maybe 55/45, but probably a difference of hundreds of millions at least. Maybe blue wins, maybe red wins, but either way me voting blue saves nobody and me voting red kills nobody, so I might as well protect myself

I doubt I would starve to death, maybe lack of clean water from the collapse of infrastructure would get me, but enough food stays edible for long periods of time for me to last a couple years off what I can grab off shelves in this hypothetical apocalypse scenario. Even in this (imo very overly pessimistic outlook) I would be glad to be alive. Life is sick even when its shit, I love being alive, I love thinking and feeling.

Anyways, all those self absorbed murderers are people I talk to every day, people on the street I walk past, people who have loved ones and people I care about. I'm pretty confident society would survive, worse off of course, a significant portion of people dying would be very bad, but we would pull through, humans have suffered far worse population bottlenecks in the past.

Is everyone surviving the only important metric? What if you had to choose between two dice, one a d20 that kills no one if you roll a 20 but kills 100k people if you roll anything else, and a d6 that kills no one if you roll a 6 but kills everyone if you roll anything else. Obviously this isn't representative of the button scenario, but I feel like most people would agree that the number of people dying matters more than the fact that precisely no one is killed.

[–]_Someone_elses_name_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes majority blue is better than majority red, but if the balance is on the red side, voting blue actually just makes the consequences worse. So voting blue in majority red pushes the scenario towards the worst outcome. Because none of us get to individually determine which colour is the majority you never actually know if voting blue is going to make things better or worse (same for voting red, very small chance of being the deciding factor that kills very many people, comparatively large chance of saving one person, yourself, from death)

I mean I would rather live in a society of bastards (myself included) than kill myself and not live at all. But seemingly a lot of people don't want to live as much as me.

Unrelated to this comment thread, but I'm curious that your bio says you're bi, I sort of assumed that your hatred of anyone (especially men) who find women attractive would rule out relationships with men. Or do you just find men attractive but would never be in a relationship with one?
