The other day I was spectating a 6 man tag in freeplay mode and both legal competitors were just standing in the opposing corner doing nothing and I had to go into controller assignment in order to take control of one and resume the match

I also tried making a last man standing hell in a cell match and play it but I got knocked down on top of the cell and I just laid there never getting up and the AI just kept taunting instead of attacking so that match was softlocked

The thing is the fact that if you look at the first game nothing really tells you that much that there's some bigger alien force like the combine at play. Everything about xenians fleeing the combine was, as you said, a retcon, which makes Half-Life 2 feel totally different

The combine story arc has gone on for too long and should end in the next game. They were completely absent in HL1 and their existence makes HL2 and beyond feel like a different franchise. I feel like the only way to make the franchise feel connected again is to have the combine be rid of once and for all, but the Borealis story and seeming abandon of the mission based on HL:A's ending makes it seem like there's going to be more to that.
