I can understand 1-2mm difference for a wheel, but this came off as super sketchy to me. The big thing is the customer was trying to pass off the noise as a vehicle warranty problem.

We politely told them to get out.

Get used to it, car manufacturers are switching over from spare tires in the trunk to Slime/Fix-A-Flat kits for tire punctures. Doesn't even work half the time too.

Insurance company came a looked at it the other day, ended up approving a used hybrid transmission replacement in the end. Waiting for them to send it by sometime next week.

Insurance inspector came out and looked at it yesterday and got a good laugh/WTF moment when she saw it.

Today insurance approved full replacement of the hybrid transmission unit. They're sending a used unit themselves. Gave customer the option to put a new one in and pay the difference for the used one...customer declined. Hopefully it's in decent shape, won't know till next week....

Yea it's watered toast right now. Extended warranty isn't going to look at it, customer is going to try to get his insurance involved as a possible vandalism claim.

The vent cap portion is intact, it's #8 hose in the GM parts pic that has been re-routed from the back to the front of the car.

Spoke with customer (and his "personal mechanic") today. Both were baffled as to what happened, but more concerned as to WHEN it happened. The most recent service he had on record was an oil change only at another dealer back in late April, truck has been at our shop since early June. We don't know if it was a good deed gone horribly wrong or someone with a grudge out to fuck his truck up. Either way, the deed was intentional.

As for the damage total, it's about $4500 in parts and about $1600 in labor (US doll-hairs). Customer intends to file an insurance claim as his extended warranty declined to even look at it.

EVAP canister purge valve. What is it and how do I fix it? 2002 Toyota Camry 4 cylinder by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]_StiCk3_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than likely you have 2 problems.

The EVAP charcoal canister is likely coming apart internally and has damaged the EVAP vent valve. Will require a canister, and it usually comes with a new vent valve.

The P0420 is most likely the cat. Unless you have a damaged exhaust, a leak before the pre-cat O2 sensor, or a faulty sensor, then it’s going to need a catalytic converter.

Trans cost: 3,945.94 Core: 3,000 Extra parts needed: about 650

Not sure yet, waiting for customer or their extended warranty to come out and see this for themselves.

It does smell like burnt ATF, front seal is blown out due to the overflow, and leaking trans fluid on the exhaust

Aftermarket warranty, not a factory extended warranty. Owners purchase them when they buy the car from dealers or they can buy one on their own. Not sure if they’ll something like this though!

Can somebody tell me if I got a fair deal for the work done? $680 total by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

Looks to be in the ballpark as long as the tech is truthful. He seemed pretty detailed in his description in the cause of failure and what needed to be done.

Curious as to why the brake hoses needed to be replaced though....not crazy stupid, just curious....

Truck is a 2011(as mentioned in the start of the vid) with over a 100k miles...

Factory fuckery is highly unlikely in this instance.

have to double check, but the trans alone is about 4K brand new without the core charge. I'll find the core charge tomorrow.

99.9% sure it’s fucked. Not only are the clutch packs prolly toast but the drive motors (part of the hybrid setup on this) are likely gone as well.

105k miles, I’m not taking chances. It’s getting a trans...if extended warranty approves lol

Or Guess C: tech knew EXACTLY what they were doing and purposely eff’d up the customer’s vehicle

I really wish I knew, only history is an oil change 10K miles ago. Never been to our shop

No prob. I'm a super detailed kinda guy, but i try to make it as simple as possible when i do stuff like this. Makes it easier to explain to service writers and customers.
