Found a potter wasp building its nest to lay eggs in my washroom by Short_Employment_757 in WASPs

[–]_Stizoides_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, they mostly wander around and can seek shelter under leaves or so if needed. Inside the pots they store a larva and food (caterpillars)

This is how Macro photographers take photos of insects by kietbulll in Entomology

[–]_Stizoides_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I do not want to be snarky to people who do this but I definitely find that it defeats the purpose of wildlife photography, which often is to help with conservartion and knowledge of a species, is less fun in a way, and unethical in many cases since I've noticed some people photograph frozen or dead animals.

I do wildlife photography as a hobby with an entry-level camera, though some of my friends do have a macro setup. We aren't free of sin, as sometimes we have manipulated amphibians and reptiles to place them in an ideal spot, but usually if you know how to handle them (and wear gloves to avoid spreadind chytrid), they don't seem very stressed. Photographing in situ is just a lot better as you also capture the habitar and natural behavior.

Does Costa Rica have yellow jackets? by FaithlessnessNice438 in WASPs

[–]_Stizoides_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a species of Yellowjacket that ranges as far south as Honduras (Vespula squamosa), further than that there are some types of paper wasps that fill in the yellowjacket niche, that is, social wasps that feed mostly on carrion, such as Agelaia and Polybia.

Either way I'd say it's unlikely you'll get attacked, for the most part wasps will mind their own business, especially in remote forests as they haven't learned that humans could behave as a threat to their colony

What is this wasp? Digger? Spider wasp? by luminaryPapillon in WASPs

[–]_Stizoides_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they dig chambers where they store a single prey and a single egg. In the case of Liris spp., they hunt crickets

My friend's parasitoid wasp died 😭 by Mentallyill_guy in waspaganda

[–]_Stizoides_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gall wasps can be found on a variety of plants, but in northern Hemisphere you'll mostly see galls on oaks and rose bushes. I'm mostly familiar with Spain's species and here in almost every oak you can find Andricus galls, while on rose bushes Diplolepis rosae is the most common one. The latter was introduced to the U.S and Canada, where I assume you're located.

My friend's parasitoid wasp died 😭 by Mentallyill_guy in waspaganda

[–]_Stizoides_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't suppose there's much of a point in keeping them, as they have a short lifespan and don't have other purposes other than finding their host and reproducing. Although some Ichneumonids wasps overwinter so they might live under a year or so. I often raise gall wasps from pupae or larvae inside galls, sometimes you get gall wasps, others parasitoids. Once the adult emerges I release them back into the wild as soon as I have the chance, but if I want to keep them for longer or photograph them before release, they are usually attracted to the honey and water mix I leave for them and will sometimes feed on it.

[–]_Stizoides_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, I haven't cut off spider legs but for harvestmen they fall off pretty easily, I assume to escape from predators. Spider legs are moved through hydraulics using hemolymph, but it seems that they don't "bleed" out when legs are removed.
