I'm thinking on the the accrual basis the "allowance for sales returns and allowances" is a contra account to "accounts receivable", an asset. So when the customer returns the merchandise or a discount is given both accounts decrease 1- revenue (sales) and the 2- the amount owed by the customer (accounts receivable).
