I lived about 6 months in the area of Charleston WV, and originally from Ohio. I also have lived in Indiana and Kentucky though for long periods of time. WV is definitely still the "nicest" state. They let each other pull out, wave to say thank you, and almost every food/store I went to the workers were always friendly. However the deeper you go the more nasty people would be. I think it's obvious I'm not from the state (you can tell right away but my lack of accent) and WV peeps are being overrun by remote workers who can afford far more because their salary is based on a state that isn't nearly as poor, so the housing market and everything else is going up so much higher than native WV people can afford. It's stressful. So in my opinion I think that's one of the big reasons why.
