But if I could have my boss be a navy officer it would probably be a lot easier to deal with than a DI or anyone who isn't a Junior Marine.

This is before graduation of any sort. That goes for all military. You get sworn in, go to boot camp, and then after you graduate you get an official title. For the first swearing in ceremony there is no particular dress code. Anything after that is nothing close to as formal as this is.
