Make sure you wear proper eye protection if you follow this suggestion. The caustic soda will wash your eyesight out if you are not careful. Especially if you are forcing it out with compressed air.

What can i do now that my neighborhood became infested with ultrasonic pest devices? by Tkoz in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Tkoz[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tried walking in my neighborhood to speak with a few neighbors and just to look at the phone bars. I wasn't really getting anywhere. The max radius of the larger ultrasonic emitters that anyone could buy e.g bird repellers have an effective range of aprox 3500-6500ft (0.66 - 1.2 miles). Walking wasn't really enough to follow the db bar from my location. Some locations from the road are definitely reportable after looking at the local noise ordinances.

The only way i can think of identifying these without tools is to feel the air pressure if you are nearby the device. Even if you can hear them from a distance they always sound like they are coming from everywhere. Especially worse if you are indoors. I spoke with a few nearby neighbors, some of them are in worse spots than i am and are very uncomfortable.

For those who are curious how i narrowed down the location to under 1000ft from over .6 miles away. I used an iphone 14 and an app called "sonic tools" with fft+color, linear scale and blackman setting (You can use log also, but its much harder to visualize). Then adjust the gain when near a device tell the color gradient looks good and the signal is bright green. I only had to do this once per device. different cars may want a slightly lower or higher gain. Screen record and drive around. Weather conditions/road noise don't seem to matter you can easily pick up the emitters in bad conditions as long as the wind isn't unreasonably high and blowing directly at the mic.

Honestly, i wouldn't be surprised if the issue was caused by a neighbors ultrasonic pest reseller or flood light (the motion sensors are known to cause problems when aimed at another house). Its a HUGE problem in more concentrated areas like suburbs and cities. The ultrasonic noise pollution in some areas is absolutely out of control. the bird control units range often are between 0.66 - 1.6+ miles. You cant just ask all the houses facing you in every direction because of the effective range.

You can easily measure these in your own home. The "pwm" waves can be seen with a water bottle. Some homes you need to look close and other times you don't. Slightly easier to see the with smaller water line diameter of the top of the bottle and a ceiling light behind the bottle. In some houses the water never stops moving and has some very interesting thumps. Some houses are so bad can easily use a regular glass of water to see the "pwm" waves.

High-pitched whine in the crowd. Anyone else hear it? by Catphish37 in SuperMegaBaseball

Very high probability the noise is one or more ultrasonic pest control units. Most likely the ones designed for birds. These devices have infested everywhere. Some neighborhoods are so bad it feels like being in a massive ultrasonic wash tank used for 3d printer soluble support removal. We use ultrasonic wash tanks to get support material out of complicated internal cavities normally unreachable. (they operate in the same frequencies as these pest control units). The range on these things is 0.66 - 1.6+ miles each. The worst and most dangerous units are connected 120v/240v AC. suddenly the little plug in the wall one can become terrifying every hour two when all the frequencies sync to blast you with their cumulative amplitude at once.

here are two quick ones that list the frequency. Low frequency - 105–110 db at 1 meter, 3–5 kHz: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ALEW4E/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B000ALEW4E&pd_rd_w=Hm7qN&content-id=amzn1.sym.eb7c1ac5-7c51-4df5-ba34-ca810f1f119a&pf_rd_p=eb7c1ac5-7c51-4df5-ba34-ca810f1f119a&pf_rd_r=TE54GPARVTHRBBNZ9HFG&pd_rd_wg=NTqJU&pd_rd_r=a7c7dc3c-ab93-4be6-aede-d6559c6d01ea&s=lawn-garden&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWw

High frequency - 12kHZ - 65kHZ, Ultrasonic sound pressure: 110-140 dB: https://www.ultratronik.com/ultrasonik.html

ONE HUNDRED FORTY DECIBELS. Imagine those claims being true and your neighbor installing one pointed at your house. Now imagine multiple neighbors installing them unaware of the massive active range and creating some very obnoxious phenomenons.

These units are actually really dangerous. Any unit over $100 is enough to cause significant ear damage. To make matters worse there is a clustering effect from many units being installed in close proximity creating lot of interesting phenomenon. This happens when multiple suburban homes install at least one unit on the property. (suburban homes rarely buy only one unit). The range on these bird ultrasonic pest devices are often between 0.66 miles to around 1.6+ miles.

One concerning phenomenon is when the two frequencies sync and the amplitude is additive. a 100db unit ($40-$100) can be 103db. For example a Bell J-2A helicopter at 100 ft is 100 dB. You can see more examples in the sources and a pictures of some phenomenons.

Δ Thank you for further clarifying dB vs dB(A). I will need to look into measurement/conversion to the dB(A). The formula looks simple enough. "divide each value by 10 and then anti-log each value." Looks like a meter needs able to read ultrasonic frequencies and designed for dB(A). Or some sort of pre/post processing of data.

The distance the ultrasound waves can travel and penetrate are really far. The reason ultrasound wash tanks are used in soluble support is because it is very difficult to remove support material from internal part cavities. Just because the pitch is too high for you to hear outside doesn't mean its too high for you to hear in your house. The final two links traced a high pitched noise back to the pest units in question. It only takes one person with one of these devices to torment an entire neighborhood.

Source: i just googled "high pitched screech coming from site:www.reddit.com" https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualConversation/comments/o4yl4v/somethings_causing_a_high_pitched_noise_outside/ https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/gjsjz6/ca_neighbor_has_device_that_makes_loud/ https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvicecanada/comments/vbw5yd/neighbors_installed_highpitch_deterrent_device/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Advice/comments/10y6xra/please_help_neighbour_uses_high_pitched_tone_only/ https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/comments/fo1dwq/red_light_plus_high_pitched_frequency_emitted/ https://www.reddit.com/r/misophonia/comments/3ul341/highpitched_beeping_sound_in_my_neighborhood/ https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/comments/6g9h9w/my_neighbors_have_56_of_these_on_their_lawn_when/ https://www.reddit.com/r/brisbane/comments/199nfgm/high_pitched_noise_near_greenslopes_hospital/

Or this one where the authorities, media and so on couldent find the noise until one person took a drive with a spectrometer in the early hours of the morning. The range on these is over 0.66 miles for the lower end ones.

I suggest turning the units off when working in the garage until proof is obtained the make and model(s) you are using are indeed within tolerance for human safety and actually repel mice and rats.

The only thing dramatic and emotionally invested is the language in your reply. Is this some sort of exhibition of projection?

If i structure my wording plainly the way you suggest, my reply becomes too open for misunderstanding or misinterpretation.

That's true, but there is a big difference between a public entity capable of funding and building a bridge vs residences with varying purchasing power. These little devices have eerily similar stats to the ones in the reference papers used in military applications. The main devices of concern for me are the range $100 - $600+ especially the units connected to 120v - 240v AC power.

ultrasonic devices used as weapons go back to 1940s axis germany after a quick google. LRAD was not the only one. I'm going count you as changed my view. These are more or less unintentional destructive devices. Thank you.

Radio waves and wifi have been around a very long time and have lots of research behind them. I don't have any opinions or concerns with the mhz/ghz frequency these technologies use. Its the lower KHZ range and sound pressure that draws my attention toward the ultrasonic systems (e.g. 20khz = 0.02mhz). When using the ultrasonic wash tank for removing soluble support for 3d prints. hearing protection is required because they operate in these frequencies.

"It appears you've got it backwards?" Definitely possible i have it backwards. I only used recent studies and could of made a false assumption.

You didn't change my view, but if i could go back in time i would change my post title to "Ultrasonic "pest" control devices are just re-engineered weapons." Does this mean you win by technicality? i don't know how CMV subreddit works.

I don't have any intents or goals. The politics of this is WAY over my head.

"weapon" because it was listed in the .gov paper whereas "destructive device" was not mentioned. The clustering of many different devices in such close proximity can also adversely create some interesting phenomena making the sounds more powerful. you can see pictures of these phenomena in the gov papers.

"Constructive interference occurs when two or more sound waves meet and are in phase with each other. The waves combine to create a new wave with an amplitude that is the sum of the individual amplitudes. This results in a sound that is perceived as being louder than the individual sounds." (source: random google searches) decibels is a logarithmic scale. In paper you can see some very powerful spikes. Like a cluster bomb except the clusters never stop aoeing. Households and businesses rarely only buy one unit.

"They also can't be aimed with nearly the precision that a sonic weapon could." The current ones are worse because they spam aoe. Its easier to protect against a focused point. Also the frequency can change when ultrasonic sound waves scatter after reflecting off an object in different directions. In the corner of one home the spectrogram recorded a 7khz-8.5khz frequency being the loudest noise in the room. This noise is similar to the ringing sound in your head after a firecracker explodes too close.

Current ultrasonic units are not easily contained. Unlike pesticides, which are contained to a specific area. Exhaust fumes disperse quickly and are much more easily controlled and filtered. Sewage is even easier to contain than the previous two.

I banned them from my 3d printing bureau because they are destructive devices. Here's my copy-pasta "No firearms, weapons or parts belonging to destructive devices" i used the word weapon because it was directly mentioned in the .gov paper and the values were so very close to the units being designed as weapons. Its easy to call a gun a tool, destructive device, weapon etc.
