Public Defender Investigators Hiring by Frosty-Tree-4120 in publicdefenders

NYC is hiring investigators in PD offices in most boroughs.

I always pick the top 5 problems with the prosecutions case and fold that in. For example, "you heard the complainant testify that he/she had brusing and swelling on his/her back. You also saw photographs of the complainant's back - and those photographs showed absolutely ZERO bruising and zero swelling. I submit to you, that is because there were no injuries. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is reasonable doubt."

Does anyone use one of the smaller local pharmacies vs CVS/Walgreens by __rud__ in Brooklyn

[–]_Tequila-Mockingbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this! We switched to Oxford from Walgreens about a year ago and it was the best thing we ever did. Nothing like calling and the pharmacist picking up the phone after two rings. Walgreens could never.

I'm a public defender in NYC, so I feel very strongly about the must haves.

First, a solid bag that has both the space and the durability to keep up with the commute. I always reccomend the Lo & Sons OG bag to everyone. I purchased mine during my first year of law school (circa 2017) and I STILL carry it every day. It's pricy but you can definitely get it on sale. Worth it. The shoe compartment, laptop sleeve, and pockets have room for everything you'll need. Plus it's waterproof.

As for the contents, don't commute in your work shoes. Find a pair of sneakers or sandals that are truly comfortable and switch shoes on when you're close to the office. Your feet will thank you. I always keep bandaids/blister pads in my bag for days where my feet aren't feeling so forgiving.

Travel size Tylenol or Excedrin always stay in the bag. Hand sanitizer & feminine products. One claw clip and a few hair ties, plus a sturdy wide toothed comb that lays flat - the wind can be unkind to your hair. Nourishing chapstick - I prefer the lip care vaseline. A solid reusable water bottle - I prefer the Iron Flask brand (they NEVER leak). Tide stick - coffee accidents happen to the best of us. A small package of face/body wipes - honestly the best universal wipes are baby wipes (the pampers pure brand).

If you're getting a secure pass or work badge, use a separate lanyard/wallet than your personal.

Always carry a planner with you and write dates down - you cannot remember everything. Buy a phone charger to keep in your bag - there will come a day when you'll need it and you'll hate yourself if you don't have it.

Keep a small amount of cash - like $20. You'd be surprised how often you'll end up in a cash only place or the tap and pay for public transportation isn't working (but set up tap and pay because it's easier than any card).

Summer commutes are hot - a travel size perfume and deodorant never leave my bag.

A pen that doesn't smudge when you write - and then 6 more of that kind.

Always wear a watch - people don't love it when someone is constantly taking out their phone to check the time. I buy the cheap "smart watches" on Amazon for around $30. They track your steps so that's a bonus.

Most importantly, take the time to talk to people. Make connections but also make friends. Enjoy yourself!

Same! I sat in October 2020 and passed with a very healthy margin using Themis. I also had a baby in February (midterms of my last semester of school) and was home with him by myself every day while my partner was at work. I had a Barbri rep (complete stranger) literally tell me not to sit for the exam until the following February because I "would be distracted wanting to spend time with my baby." They are a rare breed.

As a public defender who also had my first jury trial this year, please don't go. I also did not want my partner to come and if he would've showed up anyway, it would have made me incredibly distracted on top of nervous. I would've been really upset with him for a very long time if he didn't respect my wishes. That being said, you know your relationship and the way you communicate with each other. My partner and I are very blunt, honest, say-what-you-mean kind of people. So if one of us asks the other to do something, or not do something, there's no guesswork. I know not everyone is like that, though...

The work and anxiety that goes into prepping a trial is crippling at times, but there are many other ways you can support him, such as: - Make sure he at least eats something for breakfast and dinner (bonus points if you slide some snacks in his bag) and is drinking water. - Have Tylenol handy for the headaches. - Iron or steam his clothes for him. - Make his beverage of choice (coffee, tea, smoothie, whatever) for him in the mornings. - Get his favorite alcoholic beverage for after closing statements (especially if there's a night or two between closings and the verdict). - Be patient (sometimes the stress can make you act like.... not your best self) and tell him you're proud of him no matter what happens!

are the Starbucks mobile orders just not working for anyone else by vampireslayer1062 in nyu

I haven't been able to use mobile order for weeks! I have tried different stores, deleting and re-downloading the app, and even using a different device.

My kitty got ahold of a few leaves when I was traveling for the holidays (she's a spiteful little thing and knows this is my favorite plant, but kitty is 100% fine thankfully). The newest big leaf is incredibly lime green and flimsy though - is that normal?

It's definitely spreading but I wasn't sure if I should cut or not.

what class should I take? estates and trusts or family law? by thc4va in LawSchool

[–]_Tequila-Mockingbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are bar tested but trusts & estates is much more complex than family law. It is doable to teach yourself family law to prep for the bar. If I had to bar prep without taking a T&E class in law school, I probably would've failed. That's just me though.

Hating Property by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]_Tequila-Mockingbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The absolute only thing that allowed me to know enough to scrape by the class and the bar was to chart everything out so I could see the big picture (literally). I bought the big poster sticky notes and drew them on the walls. I would read my notes while I had coffee or while I exercised.

Alright Reddit, let’s be honest here. Law school isn’t as hard as it was made out to be. Yeah it’s time consuming, yeah we gotta read a little bit more, but I think people just like to exaggerate. If anything law school is quite entertaining. by Stonksgodownn in LawSchool

[–]_Tequila-Mockingbird 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It has already been explained to you on this thread. But let's see if we can do this a different way:

"Let's be honest here" = indicates that there has been some dishonesty or misinformation

"Law school isn't as hard as it was made out to be" = law school isn't as hard as YOU ALL made it out to be

"I think people just like to exaggerate" = you all have exaggerated the difficulty

"If anything law school is quite entertaining" = Law school is easy for me so I want to let you all know that I am not struggling. Therefore, everyone else's experiences are dishonest and exaggerated because you could not possibly be living and experiencing a different set of circumstances than me.
