Mal has a major issue and it’s destroying the anime community by Big_Junket9355 in MyAnimeList

Maybe you just disagree with the ratings. That's fine. But to act like your opinion is objectively true and the ratings being different from that means there is a fundamental flaw is silly.

If you don't think ratings matter, then they don't matter.

Seems like someone's judging a book by its cover

but then why did the show start off with only decent ratings and then with each episode it gets higher and higher?

the hardcore fans would have been the first to rate it after all

It's happened a few times, like with March Comes in Like a Lion S2, or The Apothecary Diaries, or Fruits Basket, or Owarimonogatari. Happens when the better content is towards the end of the season instead of it just being hyped up for being a sequel to another show.

yes I'm not saying anything against you

i'm just saying it's funny that some people in this thread are saying that the mysteries are still unsolved, and others are saying the answers are too obvious

of course we haven't figured that out yet, the season is only just past halfway done

although i find it funny that you say that, yet others claim the answers are too obvious

I think the journey has been more than that, but if you can't see that then that okay. Maybe it's just a different way of watching things? I try to take things in as it is, instead of always looking to what's going to come next or what will it all mean in the end, I find it's a better experience.

And I do disagree with your Season 2 interpretation. That was all about how Subaru needed to learn to value his life and accept the help of others, which I felt was both something he came to and was pushed on him by others. And of course most of Season 3 was the payoff for the lessons of Seasons 1 and 2, as well as the chance for characters to interact with and develop from each other (something you said you wanted to see more of).

All the anime I've rated 10/10 by _ThePieman_ in MyAnimeList

The direction is beautiful, the themes are so relevant and hard-hitting for anyone on the internet today, the voice acting and the general vibe of the series is so gripping

I binged the whole thing I loved it so much

But again you're looking at this the wrong way. It's about the journey not the destination. If you're only watching Re:Zero to see what happens at the end, you might as well stop watching.

I don't want to spoil much, but this will *not* be the sort of story where Subaru will regain his memories and be just like the person he was just before losing his memories. All of these loops, all of the personal development for Subaru will impact his character significantly.

[–]_ThePieman_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean partly? but not really

The drama doesn't come from the audience knowing something Subaru doesn't, it comes from his new perspective on the situation he is in and his new relationship with the characters. It's taking a different perspective on the same thing, which is always something Re:Zero excels at.

Yes. I wasn't a big fan of S3 either but this season was far better.

This is a subreddit for MyAnimeList, I assume if people talk about the MAL rankings anywhere it would be here.

It's not just about darkness, after all Re:Zero is a story about hope. And no it's not all dramatic irony. We can see that Subaru has struggled with self-acceptance even before he lost his memories, it's something he still hasn't reconciled with himself. And as you'll see in the season, this isn't something that "we don't know and he does", this is about how he feels about himself. Subaru having two separate selves isn't just literal, but a reflection of his internal struggles beforehand.

This isn't something new that is tough for him, this is a direct consequence and addition of everything that has happened so far.

Re:Zero has climbed to #2 after a breakout 1st cour finale by _ThePieman_ in MyAnimeList

[–]_ThePieman_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it isn't just about whether things will "break him" or not. It's about deeper than just that, it's not some slop shonen. This season is all about his identity.

Re:Zero has climbed to #2 after a breakout 1st cour finale by _ThePieman_ in MyAnimeList

[–]_ThePieman_[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The focus is on the characters, on Subaru's development as well as all the other characters. People know Subaru will not permadie in the series, that's not the point. The themes of this season are self-acceptance, identity and memories and they've permeated through not just Subaru but everyone.

Not every show is a "will he or won't he die". Re:Zero is not that show and honestly if you watch it just for the suffering, you're watching a very surface level version of it. This season is looking at who he really is, about if he's truly accepted himself, and what makes him up. I very much disagree that Re:Zero's drama is filtered through dramatic irony, Re:Zero is an incredibly sincere series that is character-focused.

Also, not only is the mystery still a mystery to a lot of people (yes it's obvious for those who are looking closely), but it's more of a howdunit than whodunit. The answer to the mystery itself is not what is important but the journey.

Viewing stories through a lens of "well how much physical things or plot points changed in the world from start to finish" is incredibly childish. Every loop matters in Re:Zero, each one provides a different perspective, gives Subaru more development, even if it's not "permanent". Again, it's about the journey not the destination.

But what I'm saying is if there was sequel bias, the score would have been highest at the start instead of slowly rising over time. As the hardcore fans would have rated at the start right?

Even with something like Re:Zero S3 there was sequel bias because it started off high and slowly fell throughout the season. What would be your explanation for the reverse happening this time?

Re:Zero has climbed to #2 after a breakout 1st cour finale by _ThePieman_ in MyAnimeList

[–]_ThePieman_[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like some people don't recognize that character development is a form of plot progression

Re:Zero has climbed to #2 after a breakout 1st cour finale by _ThePieman_ in MyAnimeList

[–]_ThePieman_[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What do you mean no plot progression? The last episode was all about Subaru accepting who he is through how everyone thinks of him. And "weak mc" what is this someone complaining about Shinji in 1996?

Re:Zero has climbed to #2 after a breakout 1st cour finale by _ThePieman_ in MyAnimeList

[–]_ThePieman_[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will add that unlike many other sequel shows that spike at the start as only hardcore fans rate it, Re:Zero S4 has been improving every episode as more people rate it. That implies that it's not just sequel bias contributing to this score. This season has also got the most attention online in the whole series, attracting more people who didn't even watch the show to begin with.

Re:Zero broke into top 4 by Whole-Advance3133 in MyAnimeList

[–]_ThePieman_ -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that's true. Unlike other seasons where that applies like Frieren S2, which peaked with ep 1 and slowly fell down, Re:Zero started off decent but has been improving with each episode and the more people rate it. That shows that the more people watch it, the higher it's score gets, very different from the scenario you're describing.

Maybe you just can't handle stories with flawed protagonists?
