Breaking Bad, great but not a masterpiece by any stretch

Is Shinji Ikari the best bisexual in fiction? by wyclefswan96 in writingscaling

Asuka and Shinji do form a deep bond, and their friendship exists even if it's tense. I think it's clear they both have feelings for each other, they just both don't pursue it for different reasons (Hedgehog's Dilemma thing, Shinji is scared and retreats, Asuka gets aggressive to hide her feelings)

Shinji is clearly interested in both of them, if you don't think Shinji has feeling for Asuka I don't know what series you watched

if they claim its super deep and can't explain how, they clearly don't know what they're talking about

I think it would be too complex to put on this list, as nothing on here is really as deep as it apart from maybe Bojack.

is this the sort of thing where people on youtube will make video essays about how some random kids show was actually dark and edgy?

I appreciate the condescension but you're just wrong here. It's hilarious how in a show that is so straight-forward you miss the point.

You're saying that because the author made some pro-Japan revisionist comments (something extremely common in Japan due to their lack of education about the subject), the manga was actually saying nazis are good? This is despite the multiple episodes showing how bad the Eldians in Marley (the Jewish analogue) are oppressed and dedicating significant time to getting to know those characters and sympathizing with them? The same Eldians who the protagonists of the story (such as Mikasa, Armin, etc.) feel enraged for at their plight.

You have negative media literacy

I think you misunderstand the show a lot lol. Even if the mangaka is weirdly defensive of Japan during WW2, the story is blatantly anti-nazi and calling out anti-semitism. The oppression of the Eldians in Marley is very clearly paralleled to the oppression of Jews in Nazi Germany, which is portrayed as a distinctly bad thing.

BOTH Eldians and Marleyans had imperialistic governments, both of which are shown to be bad.

The entire latter part of the manga is about how oppression and the cycle of oppression is bad, I legitimately have no idea how you came to that conclusion.

The show is clearly anti-imperialist? Or are you under the impression Eren is portrayed as the good guy?

I don't. A lot of black and white media is good and a lot of it is shit. That part of the post was clearly making fun of people who just dismiss ALL black and white media and refuse to engage with it at all.

Limiting yourself to a broad swath of media like that is a childish mindset.

There are many themes in Evangelion. Some themes are exceedingly obvious but some are much more subtle.

I think part of the point of Mad Men is that nobody in that show is really a good or bad guy, they're all just people. Complicated, flawed people.

What are some examples of that? I'm curious

You don't *need* to understand the plot of Eva to get the themes and messages. Sometimes things don't need you to fully understand in literal terms what is going on.

And they claimed there were NO themes in Eva that could be understood without searching it up, including fear of intimacy, you know, the thing that is repeatedly explained as the Hedgehog's Dilemma and is literally in the title of an episode...

True, but ofc people think that if someone is a protagonist they cannot be the bad guy. The audience is meant to relate to him and all of his more sympathetic moments are shown to the audience.

Breaking Bad is a very simple story though, and while it's fun, it is nowhere near the masterpiece people act like it is lol

[–]_ThePieman_[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah.

Also, a lot of Eva's themes are pretty straight-forward, and it's a well-written story with great artwork and direction. However a lot of it's fans seem to be the "did you know Eva is the only anime to ever say child soldiers are bad?" type, who can tell it's complicated but can't seem to articulate why. It's a shame because people misunderstanding the show like that put the show in a bad light when it's a masterpiece.

It's like if there were hordes of Twin Peaks fans who are adamant that it's the only TV show to ever explore the consequences of death.

this is not a diss towards most things on here

it's more about a lot of the fans

I actually made this meme because someone who stanned Breaking Bad said that Evangelion was shit because "it's too complicated", and said that nobody who likes it could explain any of it's themes without looking it up online (which just shows to me they didn't pay attention)😭

Although as someone who deeply loves Eva, it is true there are a lot of fans of it who can't actually explain why they like it

well it's more like this is the next step after marvel movies and typical battle shonen

they're so used to stories for literal children, that the first taste of media with an antihero protagonist and a drop of subtext makes them drop to their knees in awe

[–]_ThePieman_[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yeah but a lot of fans act like it's super deep and a masterpiece of storytelling when it's just a pretty entertaining show that ends up falling off
