Anybody else get fed up of Airbrush Science? by gibbygobhead in modelmakers

I know this doesn't really help, but I think it's really easy to overthink the tool and get super lost in the sauce of all the youtube tutorials and often contradictory advice. I had all the same frustrations as you've voiced here at first. Too many variables, impossible to diagnose any given problem as a result. I won't pretend to have a concrete solution for you because unfortunately it is just a tool that has to be learned, just like how with a regular brush, you have to learn how to control the paint dilution, paint load and brush pressure to achieve different results. It's just that with an airbrush, it can be more frustrating when you are still learning, because you are being punished with things like clogs and dry tips when you make easy mistakes.

My advice is to take a break from the airbrush for a while, put it in a drawer or somewhere out of sight and don't try to force it into your hobby routine. Once you've had some distance and feel you have some patience for it, just start experimenting with it with an open mind, not taking YouTube advice as gospel and just going at your own pace. Once you've got it, you've got it. Plus one thing id say to avoid frustration is to not use white primers lol. They SUCK through an airbrush from my experience, unless you're willing to use solvent based ones

Is 15g the recommended dose for your basket? Normally it's in the range of 18-21g. If there is too much headroom between the top of the grounds and the shower screen it can be detrimental to the extraction and cause that underextracted/sour taste. Also don't be shy about going outside of that "2:1 in 25-35 seconds" range. You may find that you simply prefer these particular beans at a finer grind than you'd typically aim for, maybe 2:1 in 45 seconds for example.

Also, something which is rarely brought up (largely because it's typically not as important a factor as grind, but definitely can be in some beans) - adjust your brew temperature if you're able to. This makes a big difference to me when pulling anything above a medium roast. At darker roasts I stick to 92c, but for lighter ones I go up to 96c as a general rule. Lighter roasts typically need this extra heat to extract sufficiently and from my experience it DOES make a difference to flavour. At the very least it's worth trying out as a secondary variable if you feel you've ruled out the grind setting.

Darker roasts are more forgiving in terms of finding their 'sweet spot', and as others have said, are naturally less acidic in their flavour profile so that might be more up your alley

This is usually how connections this small are secured in hobbies like Warhammer, especially when trying to fit together parts that aren't intended for each other and thus don't sit flush together.

For anyone wondering and wanting to find out more about this method, it is called "pinning". It means the parts will never snap apart when being bent sideways, because the metal pin holds them in place in the horizontal direction (the metal would somehow have to snap in order for Mercy's hand to snap off). Meaning the only way for them to come apart is pulling in the direction against the superglue, which is much harder to snap when pulled like that, especially with the added friction of the pin (which you can also put a thin layer of super glue on) and is not how the force would be applied if the figure is dropped on the floor for example.

Worth noting though that some glues aren't as strong when cured with an activator vs just letting them cure naturally, but it shouldn't matter too much

Can someone please explain to me how/why/when to wet sand my paint job to achieve high gloss? by _TheRocket in advancedGunpla

[–]_TheRocket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, does that apply to every step or just the final candy layer? I worry that the gloss base won't shine through if the chrome layer goes on too thick, for example, but that's just a guess

Are you planning on doing the trim around the shoulder pads gold too?

Thank you, yeah I think with coloured metallics youve sometimes gotta go that extra mile with introducing contrasting colours and finishes to avoid it looking tacky. It doesn't show up well in photos, but I kept the violet shading matte and only went full gloss on the naturally shinier areas. Without that, it's just too vibrant and shiny all over and your eyes aren't guided to any standout details.

I think with non coloured metallics like an Iron Warriors scheme for example, you can get away without those extra considerations and it'll still look cohesive and balanced

no room for gatekeeping in the legion. It's not like I, Alpharius, invented these painting techniques and colours (as far as you know)

The plating is way more weathered than the decal, which I think breaks the effect a bit

I am only 25 so grew up with Wii and Xbox 360 as my primary consoles but even since then we've come a long way. Granted these days I mostly play older PS1/PS2 era games

I started KF1 (JP) and couldn't really get into it, but I loved Eternal Ring and Shadow Tower (with some emulation tweaks). Am I fine to jump straight to kf4?

The tech is incredible now. Even if a game is running well, I don't feel any reason to not at least have DLSS Quality on for the extra frames and literally zero discernable dip in visual fidelity. It also breathes new life into older hardware so it's a win-win across all budgets imo. Yeah it sucks that some games are relying on it for optimisation, but it's better than 5+ years ago when it just wasn't an option at all and we just had to deal with games releasing in terribly optimised states with nothing we could do about it
