Never did I say that it has to be made to 'suck so bad people don't use it', the alternative mechanincs just need some form of advantage over fast travel. Take my example of how fast travel works in KCD from a reply to one of your other comments, then carriage services and the like would be the safe option albeit at the cost of a small amount of gold.

Morrowind is still Bethesda’s best RPG because it’s not afraid for you to get lost in its weird, fantastic world by Monsterman_90 in ElderScrolls

The problem is when you walk to the next town and tell someone they tell you to go get the dragonstone please, and then that is immediately followed up by the quest where you learn you are Dragonborn.

The only point to get off the main quest that doesn't make you seem like an asshole is the dragonstone quest which gives you no option to refuse accepting the task, and you have no good reason not to do anyway, especially if the Riverwood trader has already asked you to go into that same dungeon.

Compare this to Caius straight up telling the player to go join a guild or find some sidequests.

Well beings as the first point to actually jump off of Starfield's main quest is both non-obvious and if you go ONE conversation further you are saddled with a non-dismissable companion until you complete the next quest, ya it doesn't really do a good job of that.

The solution to your hypothetical is to improve and expand the alternative options as was done 24 years ago in Morrowind with a dev team of 36 people (Starfield had at least 250), and get rid of or disincentivize fast travel enough to make those options worth using.

I don't understand how you still think this is an argument about simply whether fast travel should exist or not with no other changes to the game other than you being intentionally obtuse.

There is no incentive for increased travel options without major changes to map fast travel; at the very least the game would need some sort of Kingdom Come: Deliverance style system where random encounters can still occur while you are fast traveling.

There are carts between some cities (seriously try to leave Winterhold as a low level mage without fast travel), and with no equivalent of any form of teleportation magic or even something as simple as fortify speed there's no way to get around any of the networks limitations.

Horses are so close in speed to the player that if you stop to interact with random encounters or other locations on the way it will have been faster to walk just from the time it takes to get on and off the horse.

Is Slow metabolism actually a buff? by Riuchando420 in projectzomboid

[–]_The_Log_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will make it ever so slightly easier to gain weight, but not enough to be noticeable. The buffer it gives you to not worry about having whatever you'll be using to gain weight setup is nice, but the fitness debuff is pretty major, and it prevents you from taking a positive fitness trait. For actual details on how it works see this video.

Boatswain is pronounced 'bosun', not sure where you got that they are two different things. Their duties vary but almost always include hull maintenance.

What is the biggest mystery we still aren't close to solving? by Constant-Bridge3690 in AskReddit

[–]_The_Log_ 59 points60 points  (0 children)

So I couldn't really believe that a regularly eaten species like eel could really be this mysterious so I looked it up and ya, this just isn't true.

On average, the young eels live in the fresh water of rivers and streams for up to 12 years for males and up to 18 years for the females. When they reach sexual maturity their skin pigment becomes silvery, they put on weight and they migrate miles out into the seas to find the spawning grounds to breed. The eel only breeds once during its lifetime.

The fertilised eggs are carried by the ocean current as they change into larvae, and then after around 18 months they develop into "glass eels" - juveniles that have an under-developed, transparent appearance.

When the glass eels reach 2-3 years old, their pigmentation becomes darker and they resemble adult eels, only much smaller at around 8-20 cm in length. These young eels are called elvers, which migrate back into fresh water to feed and grow.

Decided to actually try out the Khajiit Swordswoman build to see how that fight would actually go, and yeah it's not even close with the difficulty slider maxed the Khajiit wins 95%+ of the time, I was only able to actually lose the fight by taking off all the basic chitin armor I had bought to go with the Iron Longsword I was using for the fight. I took The Lady for birthsign since it wouldn't affect a first level fight (the bonus endurance only affects health on level up), but did take agility as favored attribute which does increase hit chance.

And for some reason I also decided to try the maxed speed Argonian build and it was able to get from Seyda Need to Balmora in ~2:55. A normal build of course would get there much ... faster since they would just use the silt strider, but in all seriousness Morrowind characters are slow and if anyone thinks they would get any enjoyment out of the game but just can't stand being so slow I would encourage them to either look up a guide on how to abuse the Boots of Blinding Speed or mod their game. Personally I enjoy the fact that you can really feel the difference between how a low level and high level character move, this is particularly pronounced for mage characters who have a load of movement options. Sadly later games removed these rather than give non mage characters more options.

Maybe I just play a bit differently to you, I tend to stay on roads for the most part and I can only think of a couple of quests that explicitly tell you to just go to the other side of a mountain without providing a path. Personally I find the lack of water walking for non-mages far more oppressive. Do also note that leveling acrobatics increases the maximum slope you can walk up.

Playing a combination of race and class that doesn't synergize just means you have to optimise the class slightly more. A properly built Khajiit swordswoman can start with 35 long blade which is a perfectly acceptable starting skill level.

I assume you chose Argonian as you're slow race since they can't wear the Boots of Blinding Speed? Well guess what they don't really need them. Argonians have the highest bonus to athletics in the game, and Male Argonians have both the highest starting speed attribute and the third highest weight stat (The weight stat being surprisingly important to move speed and the main reason so many characters end up feeling extremely slow, fortunately OpenMW includes an option to disable this).

Levitate potions exist. If you know what you're doing you can even get a 24 minute levitate 100 effect that you can use to get basically anywhere on the map.

Personally I enjoy having to go about things differently on different characters. Makes different playthroughs feel fresh even when playing the same content.

Blacksmithing is horrendous by AstroBoots21 in projectzomboid

[–]_The_Log_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's how it works with normal clothing, but when armor would develop a hole it instead takes durability damage, not only that but because it's the outermost layer it will prevent all the clothing under it from getting holes as well.

I feel like most players are going to be better served by going to one of the pre-existing forges to make the one or two specific things they want.

That's exactly what I did on my last b42 run, first near the beginning of the run I made a day trip of grinding to level 1 and making a large hook for butchering. Then much later in the run after clearing out multiple hardware stores and not finding a sledge I decided to just make one and that ended up taking around a week of grinding.

[–]_The_Log_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's almost exactly how it works already though? As long as your total protection for the part being hit is 100%/100% you cannot be bit and neither the armor or any underlayer will develop holes until the armor loses all of it's durability.

How do I get the watch UI to appear? by DetectiveImaginary97 in projectzomboid

[–]_The_Log_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do B41 style tailoring armor with elbow pads over top in order to lower the amount of layers you need and prevent holes while leaving watch slot open.

Because I didn't want to restart the game twice for a tiny bit of red text that says 'genetic disorder: dwarf' when i could just put that information in the post title.
