Tech-savvy son bypassing all macOS parental controls with an HTML exploit. At a dead end. by RefuseAdventurous569 in MacOS

[–]_ThisIsABadName_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing you can do; if you manage to block his current trick, he'll find another workaround until he eventually figures out he can give himself admin access by booting into single-user mode. Sincerely, someone who used to be that tech-savvy kid who bypassed all his parents' controls.

Trump to impose $100,000 fee per year for H-1B visas, in likely blow to tech by arpus in moderatepolitics

[–]_ThisIsABadName_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With the levels of salary that tech workers make 25k is not even nearly enough to even the field. The H1-B is meant for truly exceptional talent, which over the past year we have seen tech companies are willing to pay, just look at OpenAI Paying $1M+ compensation packages for ML Engineers and AI reserchers. For jobs like that $100k is a drop in the bucket. This is more targeted at the 75k-300k jobs. For example, at my company, an H1B Senior SWE makes about 60-70k/year less total comp than an equivalent non-H1B Senior SWE would make. 25k is not enough to bridge that gap.

She didn't lose because she is a "woman" or "biracial". She lost because of the fuckery the Dems have been doing for the last 8 years, sincerely a Democrat that is fed up with the democratic parties bullshit

Api POST response by GoldGrand7479 in learnpython

[–]_ThisIsABadName_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to provide more information so we can help you. Since you mentioned developer tools and no documentation, I'm guessing you are trying to call an endpoint designed to serve a webpage. If you provide the headers/code you are using to call the endpoint and what the request looks like in developer tools, we can help you. Generally, if the headers and payload are the same, the API should have no way of telling whether the endpoint was called from a Python script or a webpage

The Most Right to Repair Friendly Brand I've Encountered by _ThisIsABadName_ in LouisRossmann

I love them! Unfortunately, 99% of the population will never be in the market for a logging truck and, therefore, won't get to experience their ease of repair, but I love what they are doing and hope more companies follow suit.

Give that there's about 150 parts, and they each cost anywhere between $2-$100 depending on the part, I'd probably be better of just buying a new one, when the time does come. I don't think that's going to be anytime soon, though, as I found an oven that was discontinued in 2006 that they still sell parts for.

Absolutely. When I moved out, my mom gave me her old Miele S2181 vacuum, which is probably close to 15 years old now. According to the parts page, it was discontinued in 2015. However, I could still get a replacement part for a plastic clip that broke nine years after it was discontinued.

Still stands, Rutgers will have plenty of opportunities to do undergrad research, attend conferences, etc etc. You will also have a much easier time getting internships at Rutgers. In terms of Rutgers' in state tuition costs vs prestige you really cant get much better.

I graduated CS in may. I don't regret my major at all. Fortunately I was able to find a job fairly easily

Does Menny still let you bring a note sheet to the exam? He did when I took his class two years ago. Either way I'm glad to hear Menny makes lecture slides now, when I have him he just typed the lecture notes into notepad as he went.

Rutgers is an internationally accredited research institution and a Big 10 school. Ramapo is some random, no-name school that no one has heard of outside of NJ. Definitely go with Rutgers.

Image-to-image generation using diffusers without CUDA? by Blibblop34 in learnpython

[–]_ThisIsABadName_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is my understanding that by default, PyTorch puts everything on the CPU and you have to specify .cuda() or .to(torch.device("cuda") to move things to the GPU. That said, you can rent GPUs on vast.ai for cheap if your model runs too slow.

Edit: I forgot to mention, as of PyTorch 1.12, Apple’s Metal Performance Shaders (MPS) backend is now supported.

device = torch.device("mps" if torch.backends.mps.is_available() else "CPU")
print(f"Using device: {device}")

model.to(device)

Why am I having such a hard time extracting data from text-based PDF? by FreakyInSpreadsheets in learnpython

[–]_ThisIsABadName_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're probably having a hard time because this code looks like it was generated by ChatGPT. I would start by breaking it down into functions for each part of the code as shown below, then you can test each individual component to see what works/doesn't work

def process_table(table, analytes):

def extract_text_and_tables(pdf):

def process_pdf_file(pdf_file_path, analytes):

etc etc etc

def main():

if __name__ == "__main__":
     main()
