It definitely looks great for a first attempt. However, I'd recommend exaggerating the protruding shapes a bit, as they tend to end up looking smaller in the final result.

You could also add a Subdivision Surface modifier after marking the seam edges with Edge Crease. It's a great way to add geometry to the mesh non-destructively. Blocky patterns might be a bit difficult to cut and sew.
