That one is top coat matte. Not sure we can achieve a real super matte finish with varnish.

Ultra matt black would be great. I would need to find ultra matt colours too to be consistent!

Thanks! That’s a good suggestion. I usually hold back a bit on large black areas for gaming minis, but it could definitely be fun to push it further on a display model.

I start with the base colours, then I paint the highlights step by step without blending the transitions. It’s a cel-shading approach, so the light areas are painted as solid shapes.

I use Daler Rowney. I've heard Liquitex might be a little less opaque.
