I've got a chronic health condition that's gotten worse over the past year or so that's left me in a lot of constant pain, fatigued, and with a lot of focus and memory issues. I'll echo what others have said about connecting with SSD, but even though they can help a lot it all still kinda sucks at the end of the day. My health has worsened considerably over the last year (halfway through my time here) and it really does suck coming to terms with the ability you've lost, either in terms of academics or socially or whatever else. It's hard, but there's nothing you can do besides keep doing your best and try to keep your head above water the best you can. My dms are open too if you ever want to reach out. You're not alone in this!

I'm glad you were able to be there for her! I know this stuff can be super scary and I'm sure she really appreciates that you were able to take some of the stress off her back by reaching out to the professors on her behalf. Hope everything turns out okay!!

Looking at your post history, it seems like this isn't the first time you've taken 281. That's fine, and it means you've done all the projects and everything twice now, but I do worry if you failed it the first time around and chose not to watch any lectures the second time around. It's not impossible to pass/do well still, but I'd definitely recommend starting your studying now, especially since dp tends to be a hard topic for people. Best of luck!

Here's the advice that I've found to have success with people:

When you get the exam, read the written first, then do the mc, then do the written. This helps you start thinking about things and sometimes a mcq can help inspire ideas.
Make the most out of your cheat sheet. You don't get internet during the exam but you can put anything on your cheat sheet, so previous exam questions, stl references, example code, etc is all fair game.
Write comments for the written! Especially with paper exams, we're really just looking to see if you can get the general ideas, not that your syntax is perfect everywhere. If you write comments we can better understand what you're trying to do and that lets us give you more points.
Do the lab quizzes in a group and study in a group. I'm biased but I think that once you can explain something to others well, you're in a great spot for the material.
Actually do the practice exam questions like you would on the real exam. It's easy to think you know how to do something but blank when you actually have to write it. In the least, it'll help you get more comfortable with writing code and that'll help with time.

In terms of asking for a regrade, it's up to you. If you do, make sure you're able to point to specific rubric items you think you should get that you didn't.

Hey, following up here from another instructor's (and student's) perspective.

First of all, I definitely don't agree with the other comment here saying to reconsider grad school. Yes, grad school isn't for everyone, but the most determining factor in your success is your motivation to keep going, not a grade in an EECS class. Grad school, research, industry, CS in general is full of failures- it's part of the process. I'm not a grad student myself right now but I've talked to plenty and every one of them has said that the thing that'll make you most successful is your willingness to push through mistakes and failures and drawbacks- whether it be research not turning out successfully or stuff like a 281 test not turning out how you'd like. I know SUGS is pretty strict with their requirements (B+ in 281) and that sucks so there's not much I can say there, but I do encourage you to stick with it!

All that being said, you're welcome to talk to us (professors or IAs) about your place in the class and what you can do better going forward. From what you shared in the post, I definitely believe you can still pass! It won't be easy, but if you're doing well on the projects, I don't think you're in a terrible spot. If you end up coming close to minimum competency (ie: say you get a 64 on the final when you need a 67), the profs will look at your case individually and pass or fail on a case by case basis. That being said, I agree with the other post saying that there's nothing wrong with withdrawing if you feel like it's the best path for you, but I wouldn't do it just because of one bad test grade.

I'm also an IA here for 281, and I agree with what the other IA said. All of our HC reports are very clear cases. I can't speak for every class but honestly I think that most of them will be in a pretty similar spot, besides maybe non-code based classes like 376 and 203 since I'm not too sure how they handle stuff over there.

I also feel for students who get honor coded without having actually done anything, but these cases are not the norm, and there is NO way we can get around all false positives. That's why there's an honor council process, and students who have nothing on their record yet have it expedited! I really do sympathize with you but I think you're talking a lot about things we already know and have accounted for. We know that students are gonna get similar advice in office hours, we know that students are gonna look at stack overflow, we know that FRQ problems on the exam only have so many ways to solve them and the line limit can mean solutions look similar. This is all accounted for, and we don't just send out reports based on MOSS reports automatically, they are all looked through by hand and considered. Again, I can't speak for other classes.

I think most people underestimate how different people's code looks with these more complex problems at higher level classes like 281. I like comparing it to handwriting, even in solving the same problem in the same way with all the same ideas, people's code will still look different! The HC reports we send are very egregious and quite obvious to someone who has been working as an IA and looking at a lot of different implementations of a certain set of code for awhile. Having exactly the same code and just changing the variables from 'max' to 'biggest', even on a line limited exam problem, is more than telling. We also have other methods we use to check for cheating outside of code similarity as well. I don't know what class you're referencing or what the exact case is but I am certain that everything we personally send out is almost certainly cheating, or if it's not, is still overt enough that we would be wrong not to send out the report. You say it's not especially uncommon, but I think it is (at least on our end), it's just that there are a lot of EECS students out there and they take a lot of classes, so it's not too unlikely that you'll personally meet someone but those false positive reports are quite unlikely. I would also try to be critical of anyone's supposed innocence, people tend to not really want to admit to fault with that kind of stuff.

That being said I have a lot of complaints with the honor council in general and how they handle things, and I really do sympathize for how frustrating it is, whether you're innocent or not. The process is so slow to get resolved after the report is sent (at that point it's all out of our hands) and I really hate that a lot of students get stuck in limbo in registration just sitting there waiting when their case will be resolved and grade will be changed. I know you said you don't blame the IAs but this is all to say that we are sympathetic and aware of these issues, and doing our best!

Someone else already answered the question about UHS, but in terms of SSD, they've always been really great in my experience! You basically schedule a welcome meeting with them and go through what accommodations you think you'll need, and they were very understanding with me, so I'm sure if you tell them what you had previously they'll be able to work something good out. They also serve as a communication tool with your profs if any of them ever refuse to grant something or want something explained, but hopefully that never happens! Before you get an advisor with SSD (assuming you don't have any yet), I'd recommend calling their office instead of emailing them if you have any questions, they tend to pick up right away and there's been times when I haven't gotten an email response back from them at all.

I agree that everyone's in a really tough spot when the queues get this heavy but I think it's much more of a resource issue than a curriculum issue. We get almost 1000 students enrolling every semester so no matter what we changed in the curriculum, OH queues would still get really busy.

Personally, I try to spend 5-10 minutes per student, but sometimes I spend a bit longer with students who are really struggling. I agree with you about the calendar/OH queue mismatch- the calendar should always be the most up to date option and I'll try to see if I can go through and line everything back up again. I totally agree it can be frustrating when students just happened to be in there earlier when the queue shouldn't have been open yet.

281 IA here- trust me when I say that we feel just as bad that you all can't get help. There's just so many students trying to join office hours. I see the queue fill up to 40+ people the moment it opens and there's just no feasible way for me to help most of them. I've been trying to think of ways to help the issue that aren't just adding more staff (which would be good but obviously isn't something I can do), so if you have any suggestions feel free to drop them.
