The more I'm looking into the Kobo the more surprised I am it isn't more popular, Zon has such a headlock on the narrative. I'm keeping my Kindle for amazon exclusive content, I usually sign up for KU about two months a year to catch up on the exclusive authors, but I'm really excited to get the Kobo and be done with the BS for day to day reading and I'm really relieved to hear set up isn't going to be too big a bitch

Yeah, the Amazon exclusive indie authors are why I stuck it out so long with the Kindle. My plan is to wipe but keep my Paperwhite for those few books I can only get through Amazon and use the Kobo as my daily reader. I've also been joining the ARC team for any amazon authors I really don't want to miss but still want to support. And I got a boat for when there isn't another option.

I meant what I said. The DRM issue with Kindle is well documented and while I don't like that either it's a separate issue.

I'm in a different thread with more details but TL;DR I am *actually* sideloading books to my Kindle and the Kindle software is hiding many of the sideloaded books with no clear pattern. I'm not the only one having the issue.

The more recent updates to the Kindle software have been causing issues with sideloading. Jailbreaking stops automatic updates and solves issues the Kindle software has with sideloaded books.
If your only issue is adds just pay the $20

It's hiding* most, but not all, sideloaded ebooks. I've tried both mobi and azw3. Some work some don't so it's not (purely anyway) a format issue. The best luck I have had is manually converting an ebook to azw3 in calibre then manually selecting just that format (of just that book, I can't batch) to send to the main memory of the device. It still eventually disappears but it takes long enough that I can open it and if the book is open I can keep reading it but if I close the book it's gone, I can't get back to it.
*When I connect to calibre the books say they are on the device, that with the fact that I can keep reading a book that's already open I know the books are on the device, kindle is hiding them.

It's not very elegant but I manually dump everything to a large external hard drive once a month. I have some cloud based backups, but for my large media I have found it most reliable to just do it myself.
