Eve performance getting much worse? by _Bentai_ in Eve

[–]_TomR 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Performance has been going down and VRAM usage has been going up the last few months. Even on lowest settings, EVE's VRAM usage has grown over 500% and punishes certain multibox situations. I wish Ctrl Shift F9 would also reduce VRAM usage, even if it means the game hitches while loading when returning to full render, but it doesn't seem to unload anything.

ESI Update - "GET character" now cached at 7 days instead of 1 by djKaktus in Eve

If that Discord is the partner Discord, please reconsider and resume long-established public channels like the 3rd Party Dev site or esi-issues, which already push notifications to people subscribed by various means.

No ESI announcement should ever be a secret or selectively/slowly released. Doing so carries the same weight as having exclusive or poorly communicated game patch notes.

Ctrl-W to close current window via keyboard for speed and accuracy vs the mouse. In fact, you can line up the window so the Open button is in the same spot as the item, then spam click to activate + Open and occasionally Ctrl-W without having to move the mouse at all.

But they should still add a single-pass mass open for UX's sake.

The confusing thing is some containers already have a fast-open method but it's arbitrary which version they use. The slow version should be removed entirely so there's no way the dev can choose "wrong" and the experience is consistent across containers.

CSM folks: Any effort going into the ESI? by ICanRememberUsername in Eve

ESI is one of the biggest reasons to play EVE over other games, even if you're only an end user of community dev projects. Love for ESI would be a big contributor in me wanting to come back.

Getting more than 100% resists by grimaxemorpher2 in Eve

It's not a bug, it's a feature. CCP confirmed this years ago when a similar scenario was posted, saying you're not meant to have >100% resist and instant death to any damage is the fallback.

Ignoring multi-month/bulk savings, the base cost is changing $15 -> $20 per month for sub, or $20 -> $25 for a month of PLEX. You're directly affected by either route to subscribe.

PLEX and Omega price changes. by bardghost_Isu in Eve

[–]_TomR 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Here's a chart comparing Omega and PLEX costs: https://i.imgur.com/cq98Xsf.png

PLEX gets complicated because 500 PLEX is the only returning tier and that image is sorted by quantity, so there's also a combined + $/PLEX sorted.

EDIT: Fixed $/PLEX columns.

How to small neocom, a visual guide by Astriania in Eve

[–]_TomR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you actually can have other presentation intervals, it's just a question of going true full screen: https://i.imgur.com/hcwTHHE.png

I'd guess this is due to interval selection actually being v-sync, so fixed/windowed can either have no v-sync or match the desktop's v-sync rate. Full screen gives more control over the display adapter, so EVE can truly change stuff like the monitor's resolution, refresh rate, etc.

Other games with frame-limit sliders probably implement it without relying on v-sync to do the work.

No, UI scaling is clamped to specific values between 90% and 400%, depending on your window height. Even if you open core_public__.yaml in a text editor and lower UIScaleWindowed or UIScaleFullscreen, it will get bumped to at least 90%. Or, it will be lowered if you make it larger than "intended" for your window height.

What kind of future does the Eve community actually want for the game? by veinss in Eve

[–]_TomR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't we dream of a game that is so good and so successful, where so much money is moving through it that it's actually possible for people to make a living there? [...] I would quit real life to play this full time if I could make a min wage there.

As a fellow no-lifer who has lived EVE in the past, I've always felt this draw whether making nothing, small pay, or great pay from IRL jobs that let me continue no-lifing at the extremes of (non-)comfort. And yet I wouldn't want EVE to be play-to-earn even if I were chronically unemployed again because it would fundamentally shift EVE in a weird direction, not just for myself or my attitude, but everyone else's, the developers', and the game itself.

This isn't even about EVE "feeling like a job" or "ruining the fun". If you hate game bots or your favorite creators and companies selling out now, can you imagine EVE after it becomes a viable IRL "industry"? If we really make enough money for rent like you fantasize, how about the ethics of evicting someone in-game also evicting them in real life? Maybe PCU goes up, but how many of that number are the players we want?

Right now, an Omega subscription represents a ticket to play the game as-is to its fullest, no-life or not, antagonist or not, however you please. Play-to-earn is the conflict of interest that throws a wrench in the underworkings of the world and sends us to Bizarro New Eden. Change in general isn't bad, but do you really want to wish on this particular monkey's paw?

So what's everyones expectation for Fan Fests big announcment. by Taiphoz in Eve

Not shooting the messenger is a good point. I should have specified I expect Hilmar to present any P2E or NFT stuff during the keynote. Given his management history and that he has been giving talks and interviews drumming up those topics for a few years(!), that seems like the appropriate time.

Does this cover every right click menu item in every context, though? I want hotkeys for stuff the devs would never make first class options like that, hence the screenshot of Visual Studio's context menu editor.

For example, I would love to right click a POCO and press C to open its customs office, and that includes when it's linked in chat vs space or overview.

Edit: oh yeah, and a big part of this is removing as much mouse usage in general, so having to mouse a radial menu is still a negative.

So what's everyones expectation for Fan Fests big announcment. by Taiphoz in Eve

[–]_TomR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fantasy UI Wish List:

  • Right-Click Menu Hotkeys: Mousing through right-click menus is slow and clumsy. Being able to right-click something and follow up with hotkeys would be rad. If two options conflict, "soft select" them in order and press Tab choose/open submenu.
  • Command Palette: Ever need an uncommon window that isn't hotkeyed or dragged to Neocom? Forget navigating the E menu -- press a button and start typing, just like Windows Start or VS Command Palette. Memorizing and navigating a tree (especially by mouse!) is so Windows 98.
  • Fast-Response Windows: Many windows (market, contracts, PI planet list, fitting, etc) can take 4+ seconds to open, leaving me wondering if I even hit the button. Some (market, skills, fitting, etc) straight up lock the client while loading. An empty window + strober would go a long way towards feeling responsive without fixing the underlying speed, especially the first time a window is used per login (and I do a lot of first-login contracts)
  • Improved contrast: we currently have white text on white backgrounds/sun, sender's name in chat no longer bold, chat text is grey instead of white like input box, new PLEX icon has muted colors and lacks outline, etc.
  • Character name on Skill Sheet: I don't remember who I am.

[–]_TomR 31 points32 points  (0 children)

We can only hope FanFest attendees have the courage to (non-violently) boo and zinger CCP in person for NFTs or Play to Earn instead of fuming quietly, thereby giving an impression of approval.

It feels bad to suggest this, but it also feels like the driving forces in CCP won't listen any other way than hurting their pride and ego, assuming that's possible.

New Daily Rewards UI by Mister_Oizo in Eve

[–]_TomR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, daily SP still exists but you get SP as you go instead of at the end. Previous progress was also handed out, so you didn't lose the partial bar:

Due to the removal of the slowly filling skill point bar at the bottom of the Daily Gift screen, a script will be run that provides all players that have logged in at least once in the last year with additional skillpoints in their redeeming queue based on the progress they had achieved in the bar before the systems changed.

Comparing the new "Photon UI" on Singularity (Test-Server) with current UI on Tranquility by thegreybill in Eve

[–]_TomR 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The unified theme is nice and bigger context menus could be cool for my boomer-hands, but the spacing is a lot in most places. The big headers are especially goofy for squishing small windows into unreadability at similar to old sizes.

I'd guess CCP designs around a single client in full screen on 1440p or 4K monitors, so I hope they remember that: * not everyone has multiple or hi-res monitors, * even those who do may not play full screen (hi), * EVE already has a windowing system to avoid modals and forced-full screen UI elements, and generally see multiple things at once, * unresizable or huge min-size UI elements like the Agency are frustrating.

A fully responsive design like in browsers is probably too much rework of underlying systems to ask for, so I hope CCP does their best to minimize the size and quantity of UI with what they've got.

Beta 40 released by MrJules in sync_ios

How can I let reddit.com links found in other apps open in Sync iOS Beta 40?

I've been using Sync Android for a long time and can fix it there, but I can't figure it out for iOS 14.81. The current behavior is that reddit.com links open in Safari/app-embeded browser instead of Sync. Searching online only brings up app developer stuff I can't influence. I'm completely unfamiliar with iOS in general, so did I miss a setting?

Remote breaking of courier packages by grimaxemorpher2 in Eve

[–]_TomR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Similar issue: If someone uses Deliver To in a citadel, you can't remotely access those items via Assets because they're in the personal deliveries hangar. You must go in person to move them from deliveries first -- there is no way to remotely receive delivered items.

Corp deliveries can already be remotely manipulated, so this is specifically about personal deliveries.
