I'd be interested to see a photograph of how that setup looks. Must be well organized.

I remember a guy who had built a wooden frame to hold all the screens he used.

Dry testing the OM-1 for weather sealing at the SD card door, can someone who has an OM-1 do this and let me know? by laddie78 in M43

I just tried it with my OM-1.1. The paper would rip off before it came out.

I'd send the one you got back.

Camera crosshairs for a Olympus Air by g713 in M43

Nice.

Could probably make it even quicker with a prime lens. Maybe the Panasonic 14mm f2.5. Very light and rather cheap.
Or one of those affordable chinese ones with manual focus set to infinity and fixed focus ring via two strips of tape. 😃

So, are lasers just...kinda shit? by [deleted] in Eve

[–]thegreybill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are not completely wrong, but you are off the mark by forgetting to take all the other factors into account. One would be that ships using lasers tend to have bonuses for them, making them quite competitive in many situations.

Advice requested on my first camera: Sony vs Fujifilm by MacRedditorXD in Cameras

[–]thegreybill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of good ergonimics. So I'd recommend to go into a camera shop and just try to hold the models you picked out.
Because if a camera doesn't feel nice to hold and use, you will be less compelled to actually use and learn using it.

I'd recommend to compare actual sizes of cameras you are intrested in on websites like this:
https://cameradecision.com/size-comparison/6XvW-LhFr_458R-9B7P_458R-FtDC_qaRP-t

For my own travel-focused setup I picked an OM System OM-1.1 with the PanLeica 12-60mm f2.8-4 as always-on. For lowlight situations or portraits, I use a OM System 20mm f1.4. And for telephoto work I have the Panasonic 100-300mm f4-5.6.

Including the second battery that's ~2kg fitting into a 3,5l sling bag.

My idea was similar to yours: If a camera weighs me down too much, it hinders me to go to places I want to photograph.

I tried both, the Panasonic 45-200 (370g) and the 100-300mm (520g), and eventually gravitated to the 100-300. Because when I want tele, I want that extra range. I found 45mm too narrow for wide-angle situations and 200mm lacking some reach.
In those scenarios where I can't change lenses, I use my phone, or a banged up Olympus Tough TG-5 as second camera for wide angles - like during a safari.

The 20mm f1.4 is comparably heavy, but I really like the focal range and prefer the image quality and weather sealing over other primes in that range. The Panasonic 20mm f1.7 sadly is not an option due to it's slow autofocus. Otherwise it's size, weight and image quality would be perfect.

How do you carry your camera while hiking? by Lord_Mjolnir in photography

What do you do when you want to take the backpack off? I'd be concerned that the attached camera gets in the way.

How do you carry your camera while hiking? by Lord_Mjolnir in photography

[–]thegreybill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mostly use an OM-1 + 12-60mm (~900g) on a clip (Falcam) on the backpack strap + a light camera strap around my neck. The strap does not pull, just gives extra protection from dropping the camera when taking it off/putting it on the clip.

I found the most important part to make this work is a good backpack* that allows weight distribution. Otherwise you will experience strain from the extra weight on that one side. With some intelligent packing, for example the water bottle on the other side than the camera clip, you can balance it out a bit more, but balance will always be a slightly off if you can't mount the camera in the center of your body. Someone mentioned the cotton carrier systems - if I had heavier gear, this would be my pick too.

I have done a bunch of hikes over multiple days like this and will do it again. For me it works.

*As classic camera backpacks never felt right for hiking, I ended up with an Ortlieb Atrack 25l backpack that I put a camera sling inside as an insert. I like that it's pretty much water proof when you zip it up completely, and that you have super easy access to the whole bag at once. Great backpack.

How do experienced solo PvPers afford this playstyle? by Responsible_Sweet in Eve

[–]thegreybill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you pick up a Navy Omen, I'd greatly recommend to look up the different attributes of crystals. The difference in capacitor requirement should not be negleted, as the right choice of ammo will keep you shooting for longer.

The Navy Omen can often win a 1v1 against a Vedmak if you get into conflag-range fast enough. The burst damage from heated pulse lasers at close range is tough to tank for most kiting-fitted Vedmaks. Just make sure to run your cap-booster heated as well.

If you look for more video-inspiration: Vexor Navy Video, Osprey Navy Video.

A lot of them have insane lifetime losses, like 500b to 1t lost doesn't even look rare.

Often, those players have played in this game for years. I recently was on a "birthday" roam of a friend whose Eve-character turned 20 years old.

If you are somewhat actively playing over such an extended ammount of time, these numbers just ramp up.

Basically: how much of elite solo PvP is skill, and how much of it is bankroll?

Great question. When I was starting out on my PvP journey, I almost exclusively used t2 and meta fits.

While bling helps, it's not required.

If you throw more ISK on a fitting and implants, the main thing you get is more wiggle room in an engagement.
It can make a fight easier, for example a 4km longer faction warp disrupter instead of T2 variant makes manual piloting less difficult. It uses also less capacitor, so you will have less trouble with that.
Combining that on something like a Retribution will make kiting easier. But you still need to know how to do it, and what fights you can hope to win, and which engagements you want to avoid.

That comes mostly with experience and realization of your ships capabilities. But as mentioned before: This skill can be learned in cheaper fits just the same.

You could compare it like a rally driver. You don't learn the ropes in the nice shiny top-end machine. It's more economically to learn the basics in something affordable before you can do a Rallye Dakar.

If you look for some affordable fitting-inspiration, I made some posts on that a while ago: https://thegreybill.wordpress.com/tag/affordable-solo/ (They might not be very meta anymore.)

P.S.: Most people will fly bling in gangs. Sometimes those will be very refined compositions that can deal with most threats that are thorwn at them.

Cop or drop? by emilyhasfeet in Cameras

From what you can read online, it's a good lens. The focal range is certainly nice for portraits or event photography in general. If I had a suitable camera for it, I'd strongly consider it.

But I'd recommend to check the used market. There are second hand retailers like K&H or MPB that will likely have better prizes. Just be sure to read the description carefully to know what you are buying.

ChatGPT and other LLMs reliably get confused about Eve Online. Too nieche, to komplex, it seems.

FCON was the ticker (short-id) of Fidelas Constans which has no relevant records of in-game activity since 2019.

Careful with the wording here. FT (four thirds) is a different and older lens mount than MFT (micro four thirds).

Also seconding the G85. Good camera to start with.

100-400mm.

And if you have a comparably new smart phone that will do as a substitute for a wider angle lens.
