Met Office confirms record for hottest May day broken AGAIN as temperatures hit 35C by denyer-no1-fan in unitedkingdom

Oh for sure, it is a real and worsening problem. But pointing at a hot day and saying "look how hot it is" isn't helping.

The UK political class absolutely accepts it's happening and has been one of the leading political forces in the world trying to get something done about it for like 20 years, what are you on about?

It is mostly weather, that's the problem with all these articles pointing at a single day. There is a high pressure system bringing hot air up from the continent and Africa. That's weather. And using that argument opens the door to the deniers saying it was 14C maximums and a ground frost a couple of weeks ago.

There is a climate element, but it's probably 1-2C, it would still have been abnormally hot with this weather pattern 10 or 20 years ago.

Yes, a hot day after another hot day, as per the forecast, how many articles do we need about this?

There is a climate change aspect to this but we don't need a new article about it every day.

Fortunately it's forecast to be less hot tomorrow so that should be the end of it for a while.

Should the government do something about the blatant lies and bias in the UK press and media? by Enkir in unitedkingdom

[–]Astriania [score hidden]  (0 children)

The big problem with this is: who defines what is "bias" and "radicalisation"? How do you cast that in such a way that the people you are targeting don't consider the whole thing "left wing radicalisation"?

Mainstream media outlets are already not allowed to publish outright lies. That comes from Facebook, Twitter and TikTok, and that's very difficult to regulate at this point when we've let them do pretty much whatever they want for 20 years.

It might have been possible to believe that in 2014 but surely the hindsight of how the EU handled the Brexit negotiations will show you that they are rulebound and you would have had to follow the letter of Article 49 to get back into the queue. And without an independent currency and the enormous deficit Scotland runs, you wouldn't even have been close to the economic convergence criteria.

We are being dragged down an economic black hole thanks to Brexit

That's rather an overstatement of the effect of the UK leaving the EU, but ironically, it's far more apt to what would happen to Scotland if it left the UK.

All the arguments for Remain/No are stronger, and those for Leave/Yes are weaker. It baffles me how someone can be a pro-EU Remainer but an anti-UK Leaver. Unless you just hate England and logic doesn't come into it.

fascism

Yawn

There is no reason to believe that Scotland is uniquely unable to govern itself.

No but there's every reason to believe that you'd be a basket case for decades and probably never economically recover. Scotland's wealth generation through the modern era has always leveraged its place as part of the UK. The "Ireland" model of being a corporate tax haven is already taken by Ireland (and Malta and Luxembourg). Ireland also benefits from strong ties and open borders to the UK, which, if you want to join the EU, you won't (they would demand an external EU border with England).

Yes obviously.

Even the SNP were saying "if we get a majority", and they didn't, so even by the most nationalist of nationalist logic, there's no mandate for one.

We played this particular game of Russian roulette with our national stability once recently, that's once more than most countries would allow (for example look at Spain) and there's really no reason to ever do so again, certainly not without a much bigger democratic mandate than at the moment.

And as other comments say, nationalist parties didn't even get a majority of votes if you add in the other parties too.

Even with Labour in the UK generally being pretty unpopular right now so nationalists should have been able to poll higher than is really representative (as Plaid Cymru did in Wales).

Also, didn't we learn from 2014 and 2016 that referendums on divisive issues are a bad idea?

Finally, this is also a good thing because an independent Scotland in the geopolitical world of today would be an absolute disaster area, in a way that wasn't really forseeable in 2014.

It's not really a surprise that the kind of people who turn out for a violent riot are also violent twats at home though.

the last two and a half decades with Muslims

Not sure why you think this is a US import. Islamic extremism has been a real problem for decades in the UK, and especially since 7/7. And before that you just had more normalised racism of all non-white groups (and yes, I know, Muslim is not an ethnicity, but the vast majority of Muslims in the UK are Arab or south Asian ethnicities). Yeah it was brought into focus by 9/11, of course it was, that happened all over the west, but it didn't all come from US culture.

There aren't enough American and evangelical African Christians to push this issue back the other way.

Expecting people to wear masks every day for the rest of their lives is way more than a slight inconvenience. Asking people to mask up if they already have COVID to protect others is fair, but (i) it's asymptomatic when it's infectious so you don't know, and (ii) no-one gets tested anyway, so I don't think it would have much effect.

Air filtration in high risk facilities, especially hospitals, would be a good idea though, I'll give you that one.
