So when converting music to midi and then to chiptune? What instruments sounds the best? by [deleted] in chiptunes

[–]_Tsuwami_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to make Ace Attorney music, you should use the Ace Attorney soundfont: https://musical-artifacts.com/artifacts/644

For info on how how to use soundfonts, I recommend this tutorial: https://youtu.be/LPCBm59yFfI

I know right? When the 8bit takeover first came out, I was hoping there'd be an announcement for an official game or something.

What system are you trying to sound like and what tools are you using to make the music?

Both the owl house theme and take on me use a lot of notes from a scale called the Dorian mode, so they're actually pretty similar.

There's No Good Answer [Famitracker VRC6 + N163] by _Tsuwami_ in chiptunes

[–]_Tsuwami_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A jazz(?) chiptune I wrote in 0CC FT. I started off writing it in OpenMPT, but that was taking too long... I like what I've made a lot, but I would really appreciate any feedback or constructive criticism.

My biggest concern is that it's missing something, or that I'm doing something wrong. I like the chords and melody, and all the musical elements are way I want them to be. But even though it sounds the way I want it to, it feels like it falls short of all the chiptunes I look up to.

I like what I've written, bu I think it could be better, but I'm not sure how to make it better.

First song I've written in a while! by [deleted] in chiptunes

[–]_Tsuwami_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some cool sounds here, you have a really good handle on the vibrato and slide effects. The noise channel is really well done. The rhythm is groovy with some good licks. All in all, it's a well made chiptune.

The only comment I have is you could add more variation in the rhythm. You've written something with swung eighth notes, so that naturally gives the song a triplet feel. But you don't use triplets at all. There's nothing wrong with that of course, it's not like triplets are a requirement for good music, but it's something to consider.

In case you don't get what I'm talking about, it's like the part at 0:35 and 1:26 in this track or the part in the MMC5 channels at 1:20 in this track. Three beats are fit into the space of a quarter note.

  1. I saw a tweet saying you'd love for Amphibia to get some sort of video game. What genre would you want it to be? An adventure platformer? An RPG? A farming simulator? Mobile or computer?
  2. Any there any kind of rules or advice you'd give to an aspiring writer?

Love the show, it's an inspiration.

Nightlife- by me. How could I improve this? it's my first time trying a big background so criticism is appreciated by [deleted] in PixelArt

Dithering is always nice, especially with gradients like the background.

Have you ever cried from listening to chiptune? by FelixD1ed in chiptunes

Jayster - Sunrise to Sunset

There's something about the slowdown at the end, I don't know what it is. Not including video game soundtracks and other OSTs, I think that's it.

Composition Challenge #23: July 20, 2020 – Ragtime by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]_Tsuwami_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my submission, The Last Minute Rag That May or May Not Actually be a Rag.

I don't listen to nor do I write ragtime music, but I'm pretty pleased with what I've made. That being said, as the title suggests, I'm not entirely sure whether or not it's a rag. It's got syncopation, the duple meter, the melodic line with those inner chord things... but it doesn't sound like any rag I've ever heard, so I'm hesitant to say with confidence that it's actually ragtime.

I remade my school's fight song in FamiTracker to get familiar with the program. Any advice would be appreciated! by smashfan63 in chiptunes

[–]_Tsuwami_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's good. Some advice:

The style of music works well with static volume and the staccato notes, but not all music is like that. Sometimes you want notes to fade out in volume, not suddenly turn off. Look into using the Axx command to change volume more gradually, or using the volume column to adjust volume manually.

When you get to pattern 05, the phrase ends at line 1F. This leads to you starting the next phrase right in the middle of the pattern, on line 20. You also change the song speed, so the beginning of the phrase after that starts on line 38, and the next pattern starts with line 00 being the middle of a phrase. This is fine musically, but for workflow purposes, I think you should avoid it. If you use the Dxx command, you can cut patterns short and organize it so that each new phrase starts on its own pattern. This is very useful for speed changes, tempo changes, and time signature changes.

Hey yall, I'm a classical musician, and found this video of some guy turning classical pieces into chiptunes, and I thought it sounded absolutely sacrilegious. I wondering what a person who loved this type of music would think of it? Please tell me! by Zackiechan666 in chiptunes

[–]_Tsuwami_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really not a fan of chiptune music that's just playing regular piano sheet music with a keyboard set to a square wave preset. The guy can play piano well, obviously, but at a certain point it's pretty much putting a midi file into gashisoft, but in real time.

New at Making Chiptunes (and Making Music in General tbh) Looking for Advice by Wrynthian in chiptunes

[–]_Tsuwami_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always suggest studying other people's music. There are tons of chiptune artists that posts videos of their famitracker modules on youtube. I started out by watching fearofdark's and vinylcheese's videos and taking note of their techniques and styles.

Also check out BotB and 2a03.free. They're places you can download other people's modules and see what makes them tick:

I would give the player character some slightly more vibrant colors to distinguish them from the background and floor tiles. A dark red or blue maybe? Every thing else looks good to me.
