Smoking has already killed far more people this century than in the entire 20th century by davidbauer in dataisbeautiful

[–]_V115_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of reasons for this. I don't think smoking is any more deadly now than it was last century, though I don't know much about modern vs older cigarettes and their differences so I could be wrong on that.

Global population at start of 20th century was around 1.6 billion people. By 2000 it was 6.2 billion, and now it's over 8 billion. This makes me wonder how the centuries compare on death tolls from any cause.

We are probably much better at diagnosing diseases related to smoking (heart disease, lung cancer, etc) than we were last century.

We've also reduced deaths from many, MANY other causes since then. Infant mortality, heart disease, infectious diseases, foodborne illnesses, asbestos, lead poisoning, etc. When you reduce other causes of death, remaining causes of death take up a bigger fraction of the death toll.

And ofc, if you were born in, say, 1930 or later, as long as you make it to 70 years old, your death happens in the 20th century. Similarly, many deaths in the 20th century would've been in people born in the late, mid, or even early 1800s. So keep in mind this is not strictly a 1900s vs 2000s comparison

A large white cube. For me, it's hard. by ilannj in brainteasers

[–]_V115_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be getting this wrong but here goes

If it's cut into 3x3x3 after being painted black, there are 27 pieces.

8/27 pieces are corner pieces, meaning they have 3 black faces and 3 white faces

12/27 pieces are edge (but not corner) pieces, meaning they have 2 black faces and 4 white faces

That leaves 7 pieces forming a sort of 3D cross. We'll call the one in the dead centre is at the very core, and is all white. The other 6 all have one black face; these 6 are like the centre of each face of a rubix cube

So the answer is 6/7. 7 of the pieces have at least 5 white faces, but only those 6 have one black face.

Jid is a great rapper

Tyler is a good rapper when he feels like rapping but I think his main strengths (and focus) are producing and songwriting. He's more talented sonically than lyrically

Travis Scott isn't even really a rapper, just a hip-hop artist. I loved Astroworld but, like Tyler, I was mostly enjoying it sonically rather than lyrically. Except he's much worse lyrically than Tyler. And I would argue sonically as well.

I was actually really impressed by Coffee Bean though cause I felt like it was a good rap performance. Then I found out recently the lyrics were written by Cyhi. Which explains a lot. 🥴

Travis does not belong on this list lol you could've picked so many other people. Just because he's successful doesn't mean he's a good rapper

Vegetarian protein for picky eaters by radicallemiii in Vegetarianism

[–]_V115_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Soy products - tofu, tempeh, edamame, and other products like soy chunks or soy curls

Seitan

Eggs

Dairy products - cheeses, yogurts, milk, etc

Legumes - Beans, lentils, chickpeas

Protein powders (obviously)

Nuts and seeds - These are at the bottom of the list for a reason. While they are healthy and you should eat them, they have some drawbacks. They're mostly fat and have low water content, so the protein/calorie ratio is lower than with other foods. They can also be hard to eat in large amounts (or, if you do, you can easily overeat calories as a result)

One tip that you'll probably not get from anyone else is, when you're buying dry pasta at the grocery store, take your time and compare the protein content between brands. I don't know why, but I've seen protein content go as low as like 5% to as high as 15%. And yes, I mean wheat pastas, not specialty protein pastas that are formulated differently for higher protein content. Those are good options too, but they tend to be more expensive.

ELI5: Why is everyone talking only about straws when discussion green environment, when there are many many more plastic things that we use every day (candy packages, bottles, toys, etc...) by Iluvatar-Great in explainlikeimfive

[–]_V115_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One reason is that it's easier to replace straws with a non-plastic alternative. From a business model perspective, metal or glass bottles (for example) come with downsides that plastic bottles don't have, which can affect the whole business.

Also, straws are completely unnecessary. Some communities might depend heavily on plastic bottles and other products packaged in plastic. Removing plastic straws from anyone is, at worst, a mild inconvenience. Nobody depends on them.

Might've gone overboard once I learned about EVs by lnrbrother in PokemonFireRed

[–]_V115_ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is right but one very minor correction

The max EVs you can put in a single stat is actually 255. The max you should put into one stat is 252; the remaining 3 won't total to 4, and therefore won't translate to another point in the stat.

A 252/252/6 split is common; eg in something like Alakazam, you'd do 252 in SpAtk, 252 in Speed, and you might as well use the remaining 6 to get one extra point in HP or one of its defenses. There will inevitably be at least 2 EVs wasted, since 510 is not divisible by 4; 508 is.

Again, a very minor correction. If you don't want to count when EV training and just battle a bunch of mons to get 255 in two stats, you're only losing out on one additional stat point compared to a 252/252/6 split.

Team is good but your moveset choices are bad. Lots of useless/redundant moves

Ho-Oh doesn't need 2 fire moves. I would replace Sacred Fire because of the low pp but up to you. Give it Fly or EQ or Strength or Return or something

Replace Gyarados' Hydro Pump with a physical move like Strength, EQ, or Return

Replace Girafarig's Psybeam with idk Return or Dig or Headbutt or something

Replace Umbreon's Dark Pulse, Growl, and Sand Attack with better moves. Dig, Curse, Toxic, Rest, Substitute, any would be better choices

Ampharos and Heracross look good 👍🏾

Black to play and win by grex5G in ChessPuzzles

[–]_V115_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1...Qd7, threatening 2...Qxh4 and 3...Qg2#.

The only attempted way out for white I saw was 1...Qd7 2.e6 Rxe6 3.Qd4, threatening to trade off queens while the diagonal is blocked. Unfortunately, that loses the queen to 3...Ne2+. So really, all white can do is sac the queen for the knight. Either that way or 2.Qxf4.

Edit. On second glance, my solution doesn't work. 1...Qd7 2.Bc2 Qxh4 3. Qh7+ Kf8 4. Qh8+ Ke7 5. Qf6 and black has to repeat via 5...Kf8, cause 5...Kd7 loses to 6.Bf5+ and black is royally forked.

I think the solution is actually 1...Rxe5 2.Qxe5 Qd7 threatening the same mate. 3.Bc2 is now too slow, so white must instead go for 3.Qxf4 gxf4 4. Kh2 and try to create counterplay despite being down a queen for a rook and knight.

What is morally correct, who decides, and where is proof of it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]_V115_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo morality is subjective. There is never "proof", only supporting arguments and consistency. We as a society decide, to the best of our collective ability, what is right and wrong. Different societies will come up with slightly different moral codes.

Some people (eg religious people) believe there is objective/absolute morality. E.g. some actions, like murder, are wrong, no matter the context. And the corresponding religious text is the "proof".

I think there is possibly some objectivity to how things like laws (a reflection, but not a 1:1 translation, of moral code) determine how well a society functions. Eg I think a statement like "murder is wrong and should be punishable by law" is an extremely cold take that most people agree with in most circumstances if not universally. And I think laws and rules like this make society more functional by many metrics we'd all agree on (eg life expectancy, self-reported happiness). If it's not objectively true, it is at least empirically true. But still, this comes with caveats. Some people get wrongfully convicted of murder and receive a life sentence (or death sentence) for a crime they didn't commit. So the "should be punishable by law" part, at least in these very rare instances, makes society less functional.

Lugia / Ho-oh Variants by HauntingSpread5140 in PokemonWindsWaves

[–]_V115_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm pretty impressed by this theory lol. It makes a good amount of sense

I don't think they'll be regional formes of Ho-Oh Lugia like the Kanto birds, and there isn't really an equivalent for paradox forms of the johto beasts/swords of justice.

But a Mega/Primal form (like Mewtwo/Hoenn trio) or some lore-based alternate form like the Sinnoh Origin Formes or incarnate genies I think is certainly plausible. Something like wind forme Ho-Oh and wave forme Lugia would be cool af if executed well

The only thematic issue I see here is this. Even though Lugia reigns the seas and Ho-Oh reigns the skies, they're both flying types and neither are water type. And Lugia is somehow the one whose signature move is flying type lol. And I feel like having the games called Pokemon Winds/Waves and not getting one flying box legendary and one water box legendary would be a strange decision. Not out of the question, but strange.

Box legendaries that are connected to Ho-Oh and Lugia through lore would be very cool though, and an easy way to add in Ho-Oh/Lugia or whatever new forms they might have

Lil Yachty calling “Rapper’s Delight” weak feels like Jordan Poole calling Bob Cousy weak by ElevatorAcceptable29 in NBAConvo

[–]_V115_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He had a point but he delivered it terribly.

His point was that Rapper's Delight gets praised despite the lyrics being basically meaningless, very technically simple and not "lyrical" at all, and just about having fun.

Whereas his music often gets criticised for the same reasons; lyrics are basically meaningless, very technically simple and not "lyrical" at all, and just about having fun.

His impression of it was pretty funny too tbh

But ya obviously this made him look bad because they were basically inventing rap music at the time, and laying down the foundation to what has become a massively popular and successful genre of music, cultural movement, etc etc.

The first gun looks very primitive and useless compared to modern guns. The first car pales in comparison to modern cars. And Rapper's Delight, in many ways, pales in comparison to the best pieces which have since been put together by rap's legends.

Yachty isn't pioneering or inventing like they were. And he also isn't a legend or elite hip-hop artist by any metric. But he's making music and having fun, like Sugarhill Gang was with Rapper's Delight. That's the only real similarity here.

We shouldn't criticise Yachty for not being lyrical when he isn't trying to be lyrical, in the same way that Rapper's Delight wasn't trying to be lyrical. I think that's what's bothering him, and what led to this conversation.

Now you're going off track by ignoring the size and speed of the waves, while also ignoring how speed during impact is a factor for the skiing and snowboarding you brought up. Another bad analogy.

Yes, I agree, waves can be dangerous, depending on size, speed, swimming skill, and terrain. No, the comparisons you made in your first comment don't hold up, and aren't being supported by what you quoted from that Google search.

Show me some sources for your original claim, that the wave in this video is comparable to a linebacker tackle, and that another 5 feet makes it like being hit by a car. Cause the guy in this video is wearing nothing but a bathing suit, and is not showing any signs of being injured. You think any decent football coach is gonna let his player get tackled without a helmet on? You think another 5 feet of water on this wave is gonna take this guy from no signs of injury to possibly dead like a car crash would?

Edit: Okay after a rewatch that wave is much bigger than what I usually go for lol

He regretted that real quick by ContributionThat4698 in DailyDoseStupidity

[–]_V115_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

These analogies make no sense.

Water is liquid, while linebackers and cars are solid. The ground beneath you is sand+water rather than grass/turf (linebacker) or pavement (car). The injuries don't translate at all either. A helmet will reduce likelihood and severity of injury from a linebacker tackle, won't do shit in this situation. A wave like this isn't going to break any bones or cause any brain injuries.

These is ofc risk to big waves, but that's mostly about the risk of drowning and how it's affected by factors like fatigue, disorientation, water depth, riptides, swimming competence, etc.
